1. A glucose monitoring system including a rechargeable battery, the glucose monitoring system comprising: a sensor configured to detect one or more glucose levels within a patient;a transmitter unit configured to receive from the sensor the one or more detected glucose levels via a plurality of transmitter unit contacts, each configured for coupling to a respective one of a working electrode, a reference electrode, or a counter electrode of the sensor, and where each of the plurality of transmitter unit contacts are further configured to couple to a voltage contact and a ground contact of a charging system positioned externally to the glucose monitoring system;a battery recharging circuit positioned within the transmitter unit and comprising electrostatic discharge protection circuitry, and configured to operatively couple the plurality of transmitter unit contacts to the rechargeable battery; anda processor positioned within the transmitter unit, operatively coupled to the battery recharging circuit, and configured to generate one or more signals indicative of the rechargeable battery being recharged; wherein the rechargeable battery is configured to provide power to the glucose monitoring system when the plurality of transmitter unit contacts are coupled to respective contacts of the sensor; andwherein the plurality of transmitter unit contacts are disconnected from the sensor when the battery is being recharged by coupling the plurality of transmitter unit contacts to the charging system. 2. The glucose monitoring system of claim 1, wherein the battery recharging circuit is coupled to two of the plurality of transmitter unit contacts. 3. The glucose monitoring system of claim 2, wherein the two transmitter contacts coupled to the battery recharging circuit correspond to a guard contact and the counter electrode of the sensor. 4. The glucose monitoring system of claim 1, wherein the sensor includes one of a subcutaneous sensor or a transcutaneous sensor. 5. The glucose monitoring system of claim 1, wherein the electrostatic discharge protection circuitry comprises at least two contacts, each coupled in series to a resistor coupled to a pair of electrostatic discharge diodes. 6. The glucose monitoring system of claim 1, wherein the transmitter unit contacts configured to couple to the guard contact and the work electrode of the sensor are maintained at substantially the same electrical potential. 7. The glucose monitoring system of claim 1, further including a receiver unit configured to receive the one or more detected glucose levels from the transmitter unit. 8. The glucose monitoring system of claim 7, further including a data processing terminal for processing glucose data from the receiver unit. 9. A method of monitoring at least one glucose level of a patient, the method comprising: providing a sensor to detect one or more glucose levels within a patient;providing a transmitter unit to receive the one or more detected glucose levels from the sensor via a plurality of transmitter unit contacts, each coupled to a respective one of a working electrode, a reference electrode, or a counter electrode of the sensor, where each of the plurality of transmitter unit contacts are further coupled to a voltage contact and a ground contact of a charging system positioned externally to the glucose monitoring system;positioning a battery recharging circuit within the transmitter unit where the battery recharging circuit comprises electrostatic discharge protection circuitry, and operatively coupling the plurality of transmitter unit contacts to the rechargeable battery; andpositioning a processor within the transmitter unit, operatively coupling the processor to the battery recharging circuit, and generating one or more signals indicative of the rechargeable battery being recharged; wherein the rechargeable battery provides power to the glucose monitoring system when the plurality of transmitter unit contacts are coupled to respective contacts of the sensor; andwherein the plurality of transmitter unit contacts are disconnected from the sensor when the battery is being recharged by coupling the plurality of transmitter unit contacts to the charging system. 10. The method of claim 9, further including coupling the battery recharging circuit to two of the plurality of transmitter unit contacts. 11. The method of claim 10, further including coupling the two transmitter unit contacts corresponding to a guard contact and the counter electrode sensor to the battery recharging circuit. 12. The method of claim 9, further including maintaining the transmitter unit contacts corresponding to the guard contact and the work electrode of the sensor at substantially the same electrical potential. 13. The method of claim 9, further including providing a receiver unit to receive the one or more detected glucose levels from the transmitter unit. 14. The method of claim 13, further including providing a data processing terminal for processing glucose data from the receiver unit.
