A mixing bag for use in bioprocessing in which a fluid is received and agitated using an internal fluid-agitating element driven by an external motive device is disclosed. The bag may include an integral sparger and sensor receiver. Related methods are also disclosed.

A disposable bioprocessing apparatus intended for receiving a fluid in need of agitation and sparging using a gas, comprising: a bag having a flexible sidewall forming an interior compartment capable of receiving and holding the fluid;a sparger positioned in the interior compartment for forming bubbles from the gas supplied to the fluid when present in the interior compartment; anda magnetic fluid-agitating element positioned at least partially above the sparger for agitating the fluid and assisting in distributing the bubbles throughout the fluid when present in the interior compartment,whereby the magnetic fluid-agitating element may be used to agitate the fluid while sparging is provided to the fluid by delivering the gas to the sparger to form bubbles distributed throughout the fluid by the fluid-agitating element above the sparger in the course of bioprocessing involving the fluid when present in the bag. 2. The apparatus according to claim 1, further including a rigid base connected to the flexible sidewall of the bag for supporting the fluid-agitating element. 3. The apparatus according to claim 1, wherein the sparger includes a rigid conduit for coupling with a tube external to the interior compartment of the bag for supplying the gas to the fluid when present. 4. The apparatus according to claim 3, wherein the sparger comprises an annular passage for receiving the gas from the rigid conduit. 5. The apparatus according to claim 1, further including a post extending inwardly into the interior compartment of the bag for associating with the fluid-agitating element. 6. The apparatus according to claim 1, further including a motive device exterior to the interior compartment of the bag for moving the magnetic fluid-agitating element within the bag. 7. The apparatus according to claim 1, further including a coupler for coupling with a motive device external to the interior compartment of the bag and adapted for rotating the magnetic fluid-agitating element. 8. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the bag includes an at least partially flexible bottom wall connected to the flexible sidewall. 9. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the sparger is carried by a bottom portion of the bag. 10. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the bag includes a flexible lower portion connected to a base having a peripheral flange, the base carrying one of the sparger or the fluid-agitating element. 11. A bioprocessing apparatus intended for receiving a fluid in need of agitation, comprising: a bag having a flexible sidewall at least partially bounding an interior compartment capable of receiving the fluid;a magnetic fluid-agitating element for agitating the fluid; anda sparger positioned at least partially below the magnetic fluid-agitating element. 12. The apparatus according to claim 11, wherein the sparger is connected to the flexible sidewall of the bag. 13. The apparatus according to claim 11, wherein the sparger comprises a material including holes. 14. The apparatus according to claim 11, further including a rigid base having a peripheral flange for connecting to the flexible sidewall of the bag. 15. The apparatus according to claim 11, wherein a rigid conduit projects external to the interior compartment for supplying a fluid to the sparger. 16. The apparatus according to claim 11, wherein the fluid-agitating element comprises an annular body having an opening associated with a post connected to the bag. 17. The apparatus according to claim 11, wherein the magnetic fluid-agitating element comprises at least one blade. 18. A disposable bioprocessing apparatus intended for receiving a fluid in need of agitation, comprising: a flexible bag having a sidewall forming an interior compartment capable of receiving and holding the fluid;a magnetic fluid-agitating element for agitating the fluid; anda sparger substantially surrounding the magnetic fluid-agitating element. 19. The apparatus of claim 18, wherein the sparger comprises an annular passage at least partially below the magnetic fluid-agitating element. 20. The apparatus of claim 18, wherein the sparger comprises an annular piece of material including a plurality of holes. 21. The apparatus of claim 18, wherein the fluid-agitating element comprises at least one blade for assisting in agitating the fluid, wherein the blade is above the sparger. 22. The apparatus of claim 18, wherein the fluid-agitating element is adapted to rotate relative to the sparger. 23. The apparatus according to claim 18, further including a motive device exterior to the interior compartment of the bag for rotating the magnetic fluid-agitating element. 24. The apparatus according to claim 23, further including a coupling external to the interior compartment for coupling with the motive device. 25. A disposable bioprocessing apparatus intended for receiving a fluid in need of agitation, comprising: a bag having a flexible sidewall and a bottom wall together forming an interior compartment capable of receiving and holding the fluid;an impeller for agitating the fluid; anda sparger supported by the bottom wall of the bag, said sparger positioned below a portion of the impeller. 26. The apparatus according to claim 25, further including a rigid post adjacent the impeller. 27. The apparatus according to claim 25, further including a sensor for sensing a condition of the fluid when present in the interior compartment. 28. The apparatus according to claim 25, wherein the portion of the impeller comprises at least one blade or vane. 29. A disposable bioprocessing apparatus intended for receiving a fluid in need of agitation, comprising: a flexible bag having a sidewall forming an interior compartment capable of receiving and holding the fluid;a fluid-agitating element for agitating the fluid; anda rigid base connected to the sidewall of the bag, said base supporting the fluid-agitating element; anda gas permeable material positioned in the interior compartment and substantially concentric with the fluid-agitating element. 30. The apparatus of claim 29, wherein the fluid-agitating element includes at least one magnet. 31. The apparatus of claim 29, wherein the fluid-agitating element comprises an inner opening bounding a portion of the gas permeable material. 32. The apparatus of claim 29, wherein the fluid-agitating element comprises a lower portion having an outer surface bounded by the gas permeable material. 33. A bioprocessing apparatus intended for receiving a fluid in need of agitation, comprising: a bag having a flexible sidewall at least partially bounding an interior compartment capable of receiving the fluid;a first rotatable means for agitating the fluid; anda second, stationary means for agitating the fluid positioned at least partially below the first means for agitating the fluid. 34. The apparatus of claim 33, wherein the first rotatable means for agitating the fluid comprises a magnetic impeller. 35. The apparatus of claim 33, wherein the second, stationary means for agitating the fluid comprises a sparger. 36. The apparatus of claim 35, wherein the sparger is secured to the flexible sidewall of the bag. 37. The apparatus of claim 25, wherein the bag includes an opening for a base to complete the bag. 38. The apparatus of claim 25, wherein the sparger comprises a piece of a thin, perforated material attached to a base, which base is connected to the bag. 39. The apparatus of claim 25, wherein the piece of thin, perforated material is annular. 40. The apparatus of claim 25, wherein a shaft associated with the impeller extends upwardly from the bottom wall but does not pass through the bottom wall.
