The present invention relates generally to systems and methods for measuring an analyte in a host. More particularly, the present invention relates to systems and methods for transcutaneous measurement of glucose in a host.

A glucose sensor system for monitoring glucose concentration in a biological sample of a host, the system comprising: a continuous glucose sensor configured to produce a data stream indicative of a host's glucose concentration, wherein the continuous glucose sensor comprises a sensing region and a sensing membrane located over the sensing region, and wherein at least a portion of the continuous glucose sensor is configured for transcutaneous insertion through a skin of a host;an on-skin device coupled to the continuous glucose sensor, the on-skin device comprising sensor electronics housed within the on-skin device, the sensor electronics comprising a transceiver configured to wirelessly transmit and receive data and a first processor configured to prospectively convert uncalibrated sensor data associated with the data stream using a prospectively-generated conversion function to generate real-time calibrated glucose concentration information; anda phone configured to receive the uncalibrated sensor data associated with the data stream from the on-skin device, the phone comprising: an electronics module comprising a second processor and software; anda touch-sensitive display;wherein the phone is configured to download the software onto the phone via a data communication port or a wireless receiver,wherein the software comprises instructions, when executed by the second processor, to retrospectively convert the uncalibrated sensor data associated with the data stream to generate historical calibrated glucose concentration information using a retrospectively-generated conversion function and to cause display of the historical calibrated glucose concentration information on the touch-sensitive display, andwherein the prospectively-generated conversion function is different from the retrospectively-generated conversion function. 2. The system of claim 1, wherein at least one of the sensor electronics or the electronics module is configured to store the uncalibrated sensor data and the calibrated sensor data, wherein the calibrated sensor data is generated by calibrating the uncalibrated sensor data using the prospectively-generated conversion function or the retrospectively-generated conversion function. 3. The system of claim 2, wherein the calibrated sensor data comprises at least one of trend sensor information or graphical sensor information. 4. The system of claim 2, further comprising a reference glucose monitor, wherein calibration of sensor data comprises a compensation for a time lag between a reference glucose data measurement by the reference glucose monitor and a sensor data measurement from the continuous glucose sensor. 5. The system of claim 4, wherein the compensation comprises matching a glucose concentration measurement by the reference glucose monitor with sensor data obtained from about 5 minutes to about 20 minutes after the glucose concentration measurement by the reference glucose monitor. 6. The system of claim 4, wherein the reference glucose monitor is configured to receive a test strip. 7. The system of claim 6, wherein the test strip is substantially rectangular and comprises a capillary portion with a capillary inlet configured for receiving a blood sample. 8. The system of claim 1, wherein the retrospectively-generated conversion function is based on a change in sensitivity not accounted for in the prospectively generated conversion function. 9. The system of claim 1, wherein the software further comprises instructions to simultaneously present, on the touch-sensitive display, each one of a first output of the calibrated sensor data displayed simultaneously with a glucose concentration target range, a second output of at least one glucose concentration measurement by a reference glucose monitor, and a third output of a directional arrow indicative of both a direction and an amplitude of a rate of change of glucose concentration associated with the calibrated sensor data. 10. The system of claim 9, wherein the phone is configured to allow a user to toggle between a first screen comprising the first output and a second screen comprising the second output. 11. The system of claim 9, wherein the glucose concentration target range is defined on the display by at least one of a shaded region or a colored region. 12. The system of claim 9, wherein the glucose concentration target range is represented by an upper boundary and a lower boundary. 13. The system of claim 12, wherein the upper boundary and the lower boundary are user configurable. 14. The system of claim 9, wherein the software further comprises instructions to display the direction and the rate of change of the glucose concentrations associated with calibrated sensor data by a rotation of the directional arrow with a resolution of from about 1 degree to about 45 degrees. 15. The system of claim 1, wherein the first processor is configured to activate an alarm when a predicted potential glucose concentration value is greater than a high threshold value or less than a low threshold value. 16. The system of claim 15, wherein the high threshold value and the low threshold value are user configurable. 17. The system of claim 1, wherein the software further comprises instructions to perform a variation analysis of a potential glucose concentration for a time period. 18. The system of claim 1, wherein the phone is configured to receive reference glucose data comprising one or more reference glucose data points measured from a finger stick test, and wherein the touch-sensitive display of the phone is configured to receive user input of the one or more reference glucose data points. 19. The system of claim 1, wherein the phone is configured to receive reference glucose data from a reference glucose monitor via a wired connection or a wireless connection between the phone and the reference glucose monitor. 20. The system of claim 1, wherein the phone is configured to transmit a request to the sensor electronics module and wherein the sensor electronics module is configured to transmit sensor data to the phone in response to the sensor electronics module receiving the request. 21. The system of claim 1, wherein the phone is configured to establish a communication link with the on-skin device responsive to a user initiation. 22. The system of claim 1, wherein the phone is a cell phone. 23. The system of claim 1, wherein the phone is a telephone. 24. A method for monitoring glucose concentration in a biological sample of a host, the method comprising: producing a data stream indicative of a glucose concentration of a host using a continuous glucose sensor, wherein the continuous glucose sensor comprises a sensing region and a sensing membrane located over the sensing region, and wherein at least a portion of the continuous glucose sensor is transcutaneously inserted through a skin of the host;wirelessly transmitting and receiving data using a transceiver incorporated in sensor electronics of an on-skin device coupled to the continuous glucose sensor;prospectively converting, using a first processor incorporated in the sensor electronics, uncalibrated sensor data associated with the data stream to generate real-time calibrated glucose concentration information, the prospective conversion comprising applying the uncalibrated sensor data to a prospectively-generated conversion function;receiving, using a phone, the uncalibrated sensor data associated with the data stream from the on-skin device;retrospectively converting, using a second processor incorporated in the phone, the uncalibrated sensor data associated with the data stream to generate historical calibrated glucose concentration information, the retrospective conversion comprising applying the uncalibrated sensor data to a retrospectively-generated conversion function, wherein the prospectively-generated conversion function is different than the retrospectively-generated conversion function; anddisplaying the historical calibrated glucose concentration information on the touch-sensitive display of the phone. 25. The method of claim 24, further comprising downloading software onto the phone via a communication port or a wireless receiver, wherein the software comprises computer-readable instructions, when executed by the second processor, to perform the retrospective conversion and the displaying. 26. The method of claim 24, wherein the retrospectively-generated conversion function is based on a change in sensitivity not accounted for in the prospectively-generated conversion function.
