A computer system that provides a service for controlled access over a network to user profiles having associated image content provided by registered users of the service, the computer system comprising: a networked server system accessible by remote user devices via the network, the networked server system comprising at least one processor and at least one memory; andat least one database accessible by the networked server system and configured to store the user profiles of the registered users, image content items associated with the user profiles, and relationship data that specifies access relationships established between the registered users;the networked server system being programmed, via executable program instructions, to: allow users to register with the service and the registered users to each create a user profile comprising profile information about the respective registered user and a plurality of image content items of data types corresponding to one or more of photo data or video data;allow a first registered user to identify other registered users via a user interface and to indicate a desire to establish an access relationship with the other registered users, wherein each access relationship allows the first registered user to access a user profile of an identified other registered user via the user interface and image content items of the identified other registered user via the user interface;establish access relationships between the first registered user and the other registered users without requiring the other registered users to individually approve the access relationships;allow the first registered user to select from the user interface the user profile of another registered user with respect to which an access relationship has been established with the first registered user, in response to which the networked server system provides the selected user profile for display to the first registered user in the user interface, wherein the selected user profile includes representations of at least some of the image content items associated with the selected user profile;allow the first registered user to select and view at least one of the image content items associated with the selected user profile in the user interface; andallow the first registered user to interact with the selected image content item via interactive controls of the user interface. 2. The computer system of claim 1, wherein at least a plurality of the users comprise persons, wherein the networked server system is programmed to allow the persons to register with the service and to create user profiles containing information about themselves and provide image content items selected by the persons. 3. The computer system of claim 1, wherein at least a plurality of the users comprise business entities, and wherein the networked server system is programmed to allow representatives of the business entities to register with the service and to create user profiles containing information about their respective business entity and provide image content items associated with their respective business entity. 4. The computer system of claim 1, wherein at least a plurality of the users comprise groups, wherein the networked server system is programmed to allow representatives of the groups to register with the service and to create user profiles containing information about their respective groups and provide image content items associated with the respective group. 5. The computer system of claim 1, wherein the networked server system is programmed to allow the other registered users to update the image content items stored in the at least one database and associated with their respective user profiles and the updated image content items are accessible through the respective user profiles when the user profiles are displayed via the user interface to the first registered user. 6. The computer system of claim 5, wherein the image content items further comprise audio data and the networked server system is programmed to provide interactive controls for the image and audio content of the image content items. 7. The computer system of claim 5, wherein the networked server system is programmed to dynamically provide additional multimedia content of data types corresponding to one or more of graphics, photos, audio, video, HTML code, XML code, applications, Applets or http links for display with the selected user profile, wherein the dynamically provided additional multimedia content comprises one or more advertisements. 8. The computer system of claim 5, wherein the networked server system is programmed to allow the first registered user to select via the user interface one of the other registered users with respect to which an access relationship is established and to initiate a communication mechanism for transmitting a communication to the selected other registered user via the user interface. 9. The computer system of claim 1, wherein the image content items are formatted in one or more predetermined video or photo data formats. 10. The computer system of claim 9, wherein the predetermined video or photo data formats are formats readable by the user interface. 11. The computer system of claim 1, wherein at least a subset of the image content items are provided as data objects having predefined runtime behavior properties that when executed perform one or more pre-defined actions. 12. The computer system of claim 1, wherein the networked server system is programmed to cause the representations of at least a subset of image content items associated with the selected user profile to be displayed as selectable links. 13. The computer system of claim 1, wherein the image content items further comprise audio data and the networked server system is programmed to provide interactive controls for the image and audio content of the image content items. 14. The computer system of claim 1, wherein the networked server system is programmed to dynamically provide additional multimedia content of data types corresponding to one or more of graphics, photos, audio, video, HTML code, XML code, applications, Applets or http links for display with the selected user profile. 15. The computers system of claim 14, wherein the dynamically provided additional multimedia content comprises one or more advertisements. 16. The computer system of claim 1, wherein the networked server system is programmed to allow the first registered user to select via the user interface one of the other registered users with respect to which an access relationship is established and to initiate a communication mechanism for transmitting a communication to the selected other registered user via the user interface. 17. The computer system of claim 1, wherein the networked server system is programmed to provide user profiles for display by the remote user devices in a common display format. 18. The computer system of claim 17, wherein the common display format includes one or more regions for displaying the representations of the image content items associated with the selected user profile. 19. The computer system of claim 1, wherein the networked server system is programmed to allow one or more of the other registered users to request access to the user profile of the first registered user and image content items provided by the first registered user; and establish an access relationship permitting such access to the user profile of the first registered user and the image content items without requiring the first registered user to individually permit such request for access. 20. The computer system of claim 1, wherein the networked server system is programmed to allow registered users to specify access settings for restricting access to one or more image content items associated with their respective user profile to one or more categories of registered users. 21. The computer system of claim 20, wherein the one or more categories comprises one or more of a friend category, a business associate category and a family category. 22. The computer system of claim 20, wherein the one or more categories includes at least one user defined custom category, the networked server system being programmed to allow the registered users to associate at least one other specific registered user with the at least one user defined custom category. 23. The computer system of claim 1, wherein the networked server system is programmed to provide a search function presenting a text entry form to the user interface for receiving a search query from a registered user, the networked server system programmed to search the identification information of the at least one database and cause the display in the user interface of indicia representing any other registered users whose respective identification information stored in said the at least one database satisfies the search query. 24. The computer system of claim 23, wherein the identification information stored in the at least one database includes a name and an email address for each registered user, and the search function provides for searching for other registered users by their respective name or respective email address. 25. The computer system of claim 1 wherein at least one of the user profiles comprises a link to a respective website associated with a respective registered user. 26. A computer-implemented method of providing a service for controlled access over a network to user profiles having associated image content provided by registered users of the service, the service provided using a networked server system comprising at least one processor and at least one memory and accessible by remote user devices via the network, the method comprising: (a) allowing users to register with the service and the registered users to each create a user profile comprising profile information about the respective registered user and a plurality of image content items of data types corresponding to one or more of photo data or video data;(b) allowing a first registered user to identify other registered users via a user interface and to indicate a desire to establish an access relationship with the other registered users, wherein each access relationship allows the first registered user to access a user profile of an identified other registered user via the user interface and image content items of the identified other registered user via the user interface;(c) establishing access relationships between the first registered user and the other registered users without requiring the other registered users to individually approve the access relationships;(d) storing in at least one database accessible by the networked server system (i) user profiles of registered users, (ii) image content items provided by the registered users and (iii) relationship data that specifies access relationships established between the registered users;(e) allowing the first registered user to select from the user interface the user profile of another registered user with respect to which an access relationship has been established with the first registered user, in response to which the networked server system provides the selected user profile for display to the first registered user in the user interface, wherein the selected user profile includes representations of at least some of the image content items associated with the selected user profile;(f) allowing the first registered user to select and view at least one of the image content items associated with the selected user profile in the user interface; and(g) allowing the first registered user to interact with the selected image content item via interactive controls of the user interface. 27. The method of claim 26, wherein at least a plurality of the users comprise persons, wherein the method further comprises allowing the persons to register with the service and to create user profiles containing information about themselves and provide image content items selected by the persons. 28. The method of claim 26, wherein at least a plurality of the users comprise business entities, and wherein the method further comprises allowing representatives of the business entities to register with the service and to create user profiles containing information about their respective business entity and provide image content items associated with their respective business entity. 29. The method of claim 26, wherein at least a plurality of the users comprise groups, wherein the method further comprises allowing representatives of the groups to register with the service and to create user profiles containing information about their respective groups and provide image content items associated with the respective group. 30. The method of claim 26, wherein the method further comprises allowing the other registered users to update the image content items stored in the at least one database and associated with their respective user profiles and the updated image content items are accessible through the respective user profiles when the user profiles are displayed via the user interface to the first registered user. 31. The method of claim 26, wherein at least a subset of the image content items are provided as data objects having predefined runtime behavior properties that when executed perform one or more pre-defined actions. 32. The method of claim 26, wherein the method comprises causing the representations of at least a subset of image content items associated with the selected user profile to be displayed as selectable links. 33. The method of claim 26, wherein the image content items further comprise audio data and the method comprises providing interactive controls for the image and audio content of the image content items. 34. The method of claim 26, wherein the method comprises dynamically providing additional multimedia content of data types corresponding to one or more of graphics, photos, audio, video, HTML code, XML code, applications, Applets or http links for display with the selected user profile. 35. The method of claim 34, wherein the dynamically provided additional multimedia content comprises one or more advertisements. 36. The method of claim 26, wherein the method comprises allowing the first registered user to select via the user interface one of the other registered users with respect to which an access relationship is established and to initiate a communication mechanism for transmitting a communication to the selected other registered user via the user interface. 37. The method of claim 26, wherein the method comprises: allowing one or more of the other registered users to request access to the user profile of the first registered user and image content items provided by the first registered user; andestablishing an access relationship permitting such access to the user profile of the first registered user and the image content items without requiring the first registered user to individually permit such request for access. 38. The method of claim 26, wherein the method comprises allowing registered users to specify access settings for restricting access to one or more image content items associated with their respective user profile to one or more categories of registered users. 39. The method of claim 38, wherein the one or more categories comprises one or more of a friend category, a business associate category and a family category. 40. The method of claim 38, wherein the one or more categories includes at least one user defined custom category, the networked server system being programmed to allow the registered users to associate at least one other specific registered user with the at least one user defined custom category. 41. The method of claim 26, wherein the method further comprises: providing a search function presenting a text entry form to the user interface for receiving a search query from a registered user; andsearching identification information of the at least one database and causing the display in the user interface of indicia representing any other registered users whose respective identification information stored in said the at least one database satisfies the search query. 42. The method of claim 41, wherein the identification information stored in the at least one database includes a name and an email address for each registered user, and the search function provides for searching for other registered users by their respective name or respective email address. 43. The method of claim 26 wherein at least one of the user profiles comprises a link to a respective website associated with a respective registered user. 44. The computer system of claim 16, wherein the communication mechanism comprises at least one of an email mechanism and an on-line chat mechanism.
