A reservoir for use with a blood collection system includes a housing, a pre-filter, and a spring mechanism. The housing defines a cavity and has an inlet for receiving fluid from a source. The pre-filter is located within the cavity, removes particulates contained within the fluid, and allows the fluid to pass through the pre-filter. The spring mechanism is connected to the pre-filter and allows the pre-filter to travel within the cavity as the pre-filter collects particulates.

1. A reservoir for use with a blood collection system comprising: a housing defining a cavity, the housing having an inlet for receiving a fluid from a source, the inlet being in fluid communication with the cavity;a pre-filter located within the cavity, the pre-filter receiving fluid entering the housing from the inlet and pre-filtering particulates out of the fluid, the pre-filtered fluid passing through the pre-filter; anda spring mechanism connected to the pre-filter, the spring mechanism allowing the pre-filter to travel within the cavity as the pre-filter collects particulates. 2. A reservoir according to claim 1, further comprising: a track within the cavity and extending along at least a portion of an inner wall of the housing, the pre-filter having a location arm extending into and moveable within the track, the position of the arm capable of being detected by a sensor as the pre-filter travels within the cavity. 3. A reservoir according to claim 2, wherein the location of the arm and a distance traveled by the pre-filter corresponds to a weight of particulates collected within the pre-filter. 4. A reservoir according to claim 1, wherein the pre-filter comprises: a pre-filter housing defining the structure of the pre-filter; anda pre-filter membrane contained within the pre-filter housing, the pre-filter membrane pre-filtering the fluid by preventing particulates from passing through and allowing fluid to pass through the pre-filter membrane. 5. A reservoir according to claim 1, wherein the blood collection system includes a drain connected to the inlet so that the inlet receives blood from the drain. 6. A reservoir according to claim 1, wherein the pre-filter is conical such that particulates are collected within the center of the pre-filter. 7. A reservoir according to claim 1, wherein the housing has a D-shaped cross-section in a horizontal plane. 8. A reservoir according to claim 1 further comprising: a filter located within the cavity and downstream of the pre-filter, the filter filtering the pre-filtered fluid and dividing the cavity into a first portion and a second portion, the pre-filter located within the first portion, wherein the second portion collects filtered fluid passing through the filter, the second portion being in fluid communication with a reservoir outlet. 9. A reservoir according to claim 8, wherein the reservoir outlet is fluidly connected to a blood processing device, wherein filtered fluid may be extracted from the reservoir and into the blood processing device. 10. A reservoir for use with a blood collection system comprising: a housing defining a cavity, the housing having a means for receiving a fluid from a source, the means for receiving also being in fluid communication with the cavity;a means for pre-filtering fluid entering the housing from the means for receiving, the means for pre-filtering located within the cavity and pre-filtering particulates out of the fluid, the pre-filtered fluid passing through means for pre-filtering; anda travel means for allowing the means for pre-filtering to travel within the cavity as the means for pre-filtering collects particulates, the travel means being connected to the means for pre-filtering. 11. A reservoir according to claim 10, further comprising: a track within the cavity and extending along at least a portion of an inner wall of the housing, the means for pre-filtering having a location indicating means extending into and moveable within the track, the position of the location indicating means being detected by a sensing means as the means for pre-filtrating travels within the cavity. 12. A reservoir according to claim 11, wherein the position of the location indicating means and the distance traveled by the means for pre-filtering corresponds to a volume of particulates collected within the means for pre-filtering. 13. A reservoir according to claim 10, wherein the means for pre-filtering comprises: a pre-filter housing defining the structure of the means for pre-filtering; anda pre-filter membrane contained within the pre-filter housing, the pre-filter membrane pre-filtering the fluid by preventing particulates from passing through and allowing fluid to pass through the pre-filter membrane. 14. A reservoir according to claim 10 further comprising: a means for filtering located within the cavity and downstream of the means for pre-filtering, the means for filtering filtering the pre-filtered fluid and dividing the cavity into a first portion and a second portion, the means for pre-filtering located within the first portion. 15. A reservoir according to claim 14, wherein the second portion collects filtered fluid passing through the means for filtering, the second portion being in fluid communication with a reservoir outlet. 16. A reservoir according to claim 15, wherein the reservoir outlet is fluidly connected to a blood processing device, wherein filtered fluid may be extracted from the reservoir and into the blood processing device. 17. A reservoir according to claim 5, wherein the drain is a wound drain.
