A system for displaying information via a light source on rotating helicopter blades of an aircraft such as a helicopter is provided. The light source may be a laser light source and the light therefrom may be directed onto the aircraft blade by one or more motion controlled mirrors and a computer controller. A sensor is capable of determining the position of helicopter blades during rotation, such that light may be projected upon only the moving blade at precisely timed intervals, so as to form perceivable graphics and/or messages thereon. In addition, such system may be utilized for displaying graphics and/or messages on rotating propellers of fixed wing aircraft.

A system for creating an image or graphics on at least one rotating blade of an aircraft comprising: at least one light source;a controller in operative connection with the light source for processing signals and controlling the emission of light from the light source;a memory electrically connected to the controller adapted to contain graphical or image data;at least one sensor operatively connected to the controller for detecting blade location of the aircraft;circuitry for transmitting graphical or image data from the image memory to the controller; location data from the at least one sensor and transmitting control signals from the controller to the at least one light source for displaying an image or graphical data on at least one aircraft blade while the aircraft is in flight and the blade is rotating. 2. The system of claim 1 wherein the graphical or image data is bitmapped and the at least one light source is mounted on the aircraft, the system further comprising means for directing light from the light source onto a specific location or locations on the at least one blade based upon the bitmapped location. 3. The system of claim 1 wherein the light source comprises at least one laser and the controller transmits time delay and coordinate information based upon the blade position data from the sensor to illuminate the at least one laser at the proper time. 4. The system of claim 2 wherein the means for directing light comprises at least one mirror for redirecting light from the light source. 5. The system of claim 1, wherein the sensor comprises one or more of a passive infrared sensor, acoustic sensor, ultrasonic sensor, magnetic sensor, RF sensor, or electrical field sensor or IR sensor. 6. The system of claim 1 wherein the graphical or image data is bitmapped and the controller transmits time delay and coordinate information based upon the blade position data from the sensor and the bitmapped graphical or image data from the memory to the light source for illuminating portions of at least one rotating blades to display the graphical or image data from the memory to a person on the ground. 7. The system of claim 1 wherein the sensor is operatively connected to the aircraft's system for rotation of the rotor in order to detect aircraft blade position and wherein the circuitry for transmitting graphical or image data from the image memory to the controller is operatively connected to the aircraft's navigation and guidance system such that the aircraft's positional and directional data may be inputted into the circuitry for transmitting graphical or image data to the controller; whereby based upon the data inputted from the aircraft's navigation and guidance system, a directional vector displayed as part of the graphical or image data may be automatically updated to reflect a change in the helicopter's position and/or orientation. 8. The system of claim 1 wherein the system is adapted to be connected to a preexisting aircraft without modification of the aircraft blade structure. 9. The system of claim 1 further comprising a synchronizer for projecting information on at least one rotating aircraft blade operatively connected to the controller for illuminating the light source in synchronism with the passage of the aircraft blade. 10. The system of claim 9 wherein the synchronizer comprises a mechanical blanking apparatus. 11. The system of claim 1 wherein the controller transmits time delay and coordinate information based upon the blade position data from the sensor. 12. The system of claim 1 wherein only portions of the graphical or image data are projected at any one point in time and wherein the position of the blade is sensed by the sensor and relayed to the controller which causes the appropriate portion or portions of the bitmapped image to be projected onto the at least one blade when the at least one blade enters the position in space corresponding to the bitmapped location. 13. The system of claim 1 wherein graphical or image data is bitmapped and the controller is operatively connected to the sensor such that the at least one blade position is sent to the controller and the bitmapped image can be updated by the controller using data from at least one of the sensor. 14. The system of claim 1 wherein the at least one blade and the display of the graphical or image data are synchronized so that the controller operates to limit the display of the graphical or image data onto the at least one blade at a predetermined location in synchronism with at least one blade passing into the predetermined location in space.
