An air cleaner comprises an enclosing structure having support members spaced a distance from top and bottom walls. A collapsible extended surface pleated media filter has end members and a pleated mechanical media filter. The end members have an outer surface and a thickness that is based on the distance that the support surfaces are spaced from the top and bottom walls to provide an effective seal against air flowing around the collapsible filter. The end members can have a seal structure provided on the outer surface that interacts with the top or bottom wall. The collapsible filter optionally includes flexible support member(s) on or in the pleated mechanical media filter that assist in keeping the pleats open. The pleated mechanical media filter can extend beyond the end member(s) and interact with portions of the frame to provide an effective seal against air flowing around the collapsible filter.

An air cleaner comprising: an enclosing structure, comprising: a first wall, a second wall and two side surfaces, anda first set of at least one support feature positioned adjacent the first wall and between the two side surfaces, and a second set of at least one support feature positioned adjacent the second wall and between the two side surfaces; anda collapsible filter, comprising: a pleated media filter having a first end and a second end, wherein the pleated media filter extends a first length, anda plurality of end structures extending a second length parallel to the first length, the first length being greater than the second length, at least one such end structure provided at each of the first and second ends of the pleated media filter such that the pleated media filter extends between the at least two end structures, wherein:after the collapsible filter is placed in the enclosing structure, each end structure interacts with one of 1) the first set of at least one support feature and the first wall or 2) the second set of at least one support feature and the second wall, such that an effective seal is provided between 1) at least one end structure and the first wall and 2) at least one end structure and the second wall. 2. The air cleaner of claim 1, wherein: the first and second sets of at least one support feature are positioned a first distance from the first wall and the second wall, respectively; andthe plurality of end structures comprises at least one first end structure and at least one second end structure, each of the at least one first and second end structures having a thickness that is at most substantially equal to the first distance. 3. The air cleaner of claim 2, wherein the at least one first and second end structures each comprises at least one end member that is attached to the respective first and second ends of the pleated media filter. 4. The air cleaner of claim 2, wherein the first and second end structures each comprises at least one segment/pleat of the respective first and second ends of the pleated media filter. 5. The air cleaner of claim 2, wherein, in use, a flow path through the pleated media filter has a lower initial flow resistance than at least one of a flow resistance of a flow path between the at least one first end structure and the first wall and a flow resistance of a flow path between the at least one second end structure and the second wall. 6. The air cleaner of claim 1, wherein, in use, at least initially, a majority of a flow volume flowing through the enclosing structure passes through the pleated media filter. 7. The air cleaner of claim 1, wherein the first wall, the second wall, and the two side surfaces are elements of a segment of ductwork. 8. The air cleaner of claim 1, wherein the two side surfaces are a first door and a second door. 9. The air cleaner of claim 1, wherein the two side surfaces are a rear wall and a door. 10. The air cleaner of claim 1, wherein the at least one of the first and second sets of at least one support feature each comprises at least one rail attached to the first wall and the second wall, respectively. 11. The air cleaner of claim 1, wherein: at least one of the plurality of end structures includes a first edge opposing a second edge, the second length extends between the first and second edges;the pleated media filter further comprises a first side portion and a second side portion, the first length extends between the first side portion and the second side portion;the first side portion includes a first flexible end portion defined by an amount of the pleated media filter which extends between the first side portion and the first edge of the end structure;the second side portion includes a second flexible end portion defined by an amount of the pleated media filter which extends between the second side portion and the second edge of the end structure; andafter the collapsible filter is placed in the enclosing structure, the first and second side portions of the pleated media filter interact with the two side surfaces, wherein the first flexible end portion bends and conforms upon engagement with the first wall and the second flexible end portion bends and conforms upon engagement with the second wall to at least partially provide an effective seal between the pleated media filter and the two side surfaces in the presence of flowing air. 12. The air cleaner of claim 11, wherein one of the enclosing structure side surfaces comprises a sealing surface that interacts with one of the first or second side portions of the pleated media filter to at least partially provide the effective seal. 13. The air cleaner of claim 11, wherein one of the first and second side portions comprises a member connected to an end of each pleat of the pleated media filter. 14. The air cleaner of claim 1, wherein the collapsible filter further comprises a flexible support member having a first end, a second end, at least one end structure attached to each of the first and second ends of the flexible support member such that the flexible support member extends between at least two end structures. 15. A collapsible filter for an air cleaner having an enclosing structure including a first wall, a second wall and two side surfaces, comprising: a pleated media filter having a first end, a second end, and a filter media having a first side portion and a second side portion which are separated by a pleat edge, the first side portion includes a first flexible end portion, the second side portion includes a second flexible end portion, a first portion of the pleat edge is included in the first flexible end portion, a second portion of the pleat edge is included in the second flexible end portion, and the first and second side portions include a member connected to an end of each pleat of the pleated media filter;a first end structure provided at the first end of the pleated media filter and a second end structure provided at the second ends of the pleated media filter such that the pleated media filter extends between the first and second end structures, wherein the collapsible filter is designed such that:after the collapsible filter is placed into the enclosing structure, the first flexible end portion engages and conforms to a first one of the two side surfaces by bending, such that the first flexible end portion and the first portion of the pleat edge included in the flexible end portion form an angle to the pleat edge, forming an effective seal between the first flexible end portion and the first one of the two side surfaces in the presence of air flow,the second flexible end portion engages and conforms to a second one of the two surfaces by bending, such that the second flexible end portion and the second portion of the pleat edge form an angle to the pleat edge, forming an effective seal between the second flexible end portion and the second one of the two side surfaces in the presence of air flow,and each end structure will be located adjacent to one of the first wall and the second wall, such that an effective seal will be provided in the presence of air flow between the first end structures and the first wall and the second end structures and the second wall. 16. A collapsible filter for an air cleaner having an enclosing structure including a first wall, a second wall and two side surfaces, comprising: a pleated media filter having a first end, a second end, and a filter media having a pleat edge and a flexible end portion, a portion of the pleat edge is included in the flexible end portion;a first end structure provided at the first end of the pleated media filter and a second end structure provided at the second end of the pleated media filter such that the pleated media filter extends between the first and second end structures; anda flexible support member having a first end and a second end, the first end couples to the first end structure and the second ends couples to the second end structure such that the flexible support member extends between the first and second end structures, wherein the collapsible filter is designed such that:after the collapsible filter is placed into the enclosing structure, the flexible end portion engages and conforms to one of the two side surfaces by bending, such that the flexible end portion and the portion of the pleat edge included in the flexible end portion form an angle to the pleat edge, forming an effective seal between the flexible end portion and one of the two side surfaces in the presence of air flow, and each end structure will be located adjacent to one of the first wall and the second wall, such that an effective seal will be provided in the presence of air flow between the first end structures and the first wall and the second end structures and the second wall.
