A barbecue grill comprising: a firebowl and a cover covering at least a portion of the firebowl in a closed position thereby defining at least a partially closed cooking chamber for the cooking of food;a side shelf being suspended from the firebowl, the side shelf being movable between a storage position, where at least a portion of the side shelf is situated within the cooking chamber, and a usage position, where at least a portion of the shelf is situated outside of the cooking chamber; and,the firebowl having an upper peripheral edge and the cover having a lower peripheral edge, the lower peripheral edge of the cover generally being disposed at a lower elevation than the upper peripheral edge of the firebowl when the cover is in the closed position, and the cover has a notched portion whereby the lower peripheral edge of the cover at the notched portion is disposed at a higher elevation than the upper peripheral edge of the firebowl thereby defining an opening into the cooking chamber, the opening accommodating the passage of the side shelf whereby a first portion of the side shelf is inside of the cooking chamber and a second portion of the side shelf is outside of the cooking chamber. 2. The barbecue grill of claim 1, wherein: the firebowl carries a cooking grate inside of the cooking chamber and a handle outside of the cooking chamber; and,the side shelf has a pivot axis about which the shelf moves between the storage position and the usage position, the pivot axis being disposed between the cooking grate and the handle whereby the side shelf rests on the handle in the usage position and rests above the cooking grate in the storage position. 3. The barbecue grill of claim 2, wherein the side shelf has a void area, the void area being located between the pivot axis and an adjacent wall of the firebowl when the side shelf is in the usage position thereby providing a gap between the side shelf and the adjacent wall of the firebowl. 4. The barbecue grill of claim 1, wherein the side shelf extends through the opening when the side shelf is placed in the storage position. 5. The barbecue grill of claim 1, wherein the side shelf extends through the opening when the side shelf is placed in the usage position. 6. The barbecue grill of claim 1 further comprising a cooking grate, wherein a portion of the side shelf is supported on the upper peripheral edge of the firebox when the shelf is placed in the storage position to provide a spaced relationship between the shelf and the cooking grate. 7. The barbecue grill of claim 1 further comprising a handle, the handle having a gripping portion being disposed between support portions, the support portions extending generally transversely to the gripping portion and being attached to the firebowl, the side shelf being hingedly attached to the support portions of the handle. 8. The barbecue grill of claim 7, wherein the side shelf includes oppositely facing pintles which engage with corresponding recesses in the support portions, the recesses being disposed above the gripping portion of the handle and between the gripping portion and the firebowl, whereby the side shelf rests on top of the handle when the side shelf is placed in the usage position. 9. A barbecue grill comprising: a generally closed cooking chamber formed by a firebowl and a cover;a cooking grate disposed within the cooking chamber;a side shelf being movable between a storage position inside of the cooking chamber and a usage position outside of the cooking chamber, wherein a work surface of the side shelf contacts and is at least partially supported by an upper rim of the firebox when the shelf is placed in the storage position to provide a spaced relationship between the shelf and the cooking grate; and,in the storage position, a portion of the side shelf is vertically spaced from the cooking grate to mitigate heat damage to the side shelf. 10. The barbecue grill of claim 9, wherein the shelf includes a boss that is adapted to provide supporting contact for the shelf and a spaced relationship between the portion of the shelf and the cooking grate. 11. The barbecue grill of claim 9 further comprising a handle, wherein the side shelf has a pivot axis about which the shelf moves between the storage position and the usage position, the pivot axis being disposed between the cooking grate and the handle whereby the side shelf is supported by the handle in the usage position and is disposed above the cooking grate in the storage position. 12. A barbecue grill comprising: a generally closed cooking chamber defined by a firebowl and a cover;a side shelf being movable between a storage position inside of the cooking chamber and a usage position outside of the cooking chamber; and,the cooking chamber having a opening between the firebox and the cover, the opening accommodating the passage of the side shelf whereby a first portion of the side shelf is inside of the cooking chamber and a second portion of the side shelf is outside of the cooking chamber. 13. The barbecue grill of claim 12 further including a cooking grate, wherein, in the storage position, a substantial portion of the side shelf is vertically spaced from the cooking grate to mitigate heat damage to the side shelf. 14. The barbecue grill of claim 12 further including a cooking grate and a handle, wherein, the side shelf has a pivot axis about which the shelf moves between the storage position and the usage position, the pivot axis being disposed between the cooking grate and the handle whereby the side shelf rests on the handle in the usage position and rests above the cooking grate in the storage position. 15. A barbecue grill comprising: a generally closed cooking chamber defined by a firebowl and a cover;a handle attached to the cooking chamber;a side shelf being directly attached to the handle whereby the side shelf is movable between a storage position inside of the cooking chamber and a usage position outside of the cooking chamber; and,in the usage position, a gripping portion of the handle contacting an underside of the side shelf to provide support to the side shelf. 16. A barbecue grill comprising: a generally closed cooking chamber defined by a firebowl and a cover;a cooking grate being disposed within the cooking chamber;a handle;a side shelf, the side shelf having a pivot axis about which the side shelf is movable between a storage position and a usage position, the pivot axis being disposed between the cooking grate and the handle whereby the side shelf rests on the handle in the usage position and rests above the cooking grate in the storage position;the cooking chamber having a opening between the firebox and the cover, the opening accommodating the passage of the side shelf whereby a first portion of the side shelf is inside of the cooking chamber and a second portion of the side shelf is outside of the cooking chamber; and,in the storage position, at least a portion of the side shelf is vertically spaced from the cooking grate to mitigate heat damage to the side shelf.
