A suction cup adapted to engage a surface of a beating heart with sufficient force to move the beating heart to an unnatural position upon moving the suction cup, while the suction cup maintains engagement with the surface of the heart and the heart continues to heat. Various suction cups are described each including at least a first chamber having a flexible rim and configured to engage the surface of the beating heart and a second chamber smaller than the first chamber and fluidly connected therewith. A suspension device configured to engage a beating heart and maintain engagement via suction while moving the suspension device to move the beating heart to an unnatural position and maintain the beating heart in the unnatural position to perform a surgical procedure, while the heart continues to beat, includes a suction cup and a support arm connected thereto. The suction cup has a first chamber configured to engage the surface of the beating heart, and a second chamber smaller than the first chamber and fluidly connected therewith. The second chamber is adapted to fluidly connect the first chamber with a source of suction. The support arm is movable with the suction cup to effect movement of the beating heart after engagement of the suction cup to a surface of the heating heart.

1. A suction cup adapted to engage a surface of a beating heart with sufficient force to move the beating heart to an unnatural position upon moving the suction cup, while the suction cup maintains engagement with the surface of the heart and the heart continues to beat, said suction cup comprising:
1. A suction cup adapted to engage a surface of a beating heart with sufficient force to move the beating heart to an unnatural position upon moving the suction cup, while the suction cup maintains engagement with the surface of the heart and the heart continues to beat, said suction cup comprising: a first chamber defined in a first sidewall section of said suction cup, said first chamber having a rim and being configured to engage the surface of the beating heart; anda second chamber defined in a second sidewall section of said suction cup, said second chamber being smaller than said first chamber and in fluid communication with said first chamber, said second chamber having a distal opening and a proximal opening with a chamber space defined therebetween; andan aperture proximal of said proximal opening of said second chamber, said aperture being smaller in dimension than said proximal opening and being further adapted to fluidly connect said suction cup with a source of suction; wherein at least a portion of said suction cup conforms to a shape of the surface of the beating heart when engaged therewith under a suction force. 2. The suction cup of claim 1, wherein said rim comprises a flexible rim. 3. The suction cup of claim 2, wherein said flexible rim is flexible in a plurality of planes to accommodate multiplanar movement of the surface of the beating heart without breaking contact between the surface of the beating heart and said flexible rim. 4. The suction cup of claim 1, further comprising a shoulder formed between said first sidewall section and said second sidewall section. 5. The suction cup of claim 1, further comprising a suction-permeable bather separating said first chamber from said second chamber. 6. The suction cup of claim 5, wherein said suction-permeable barrier comprises a mesh grid element. 7. A suction cup adapted to engage a surface of a beating heart with sufficient force to move the beating heart to an unnatural position upon moving the suction cup, while the suction cup maintains engagement with the surface of the heart and the heart continues to beat, said suction cup comprising: a first chamber configured to engage the surface of the beating heart; anda second chamber smaller than said first chamber and in fluid communication therewith, said second chamber being further adapted to fluidly connect and provide spacing between said first chamber and a suction line connectable to a source of suction; wherein said suction cup is configured such that the surface of the beating heart conforms to at least a portion thereof when said suction cup is engaged therewith under a suction force. 8. The suction cup of claim 7, further comprising an aperture, said aperture being smaller in dimension than said second chamber and fluidly connecting said second chamber to said suction line. 9. The suction cup of claim 7, further comprising a shoulder delimiting said first and second chambers. 10. A method of manipulating a beating heart to orient the beating heart in a desired position for performing a surgical procedure, said method comprising: providing a suction cup having a first chamber configured to engage the surface of the beating heart, and a second chamber smaller than the first chamber and fluidly connected with the first chamber, the second chamber being further fluidly connected to a source of suction via a suction line connected proximally of said second chamber to said suction cup;contacting a surface of the beating heart with the first chamber;applying suction between the first chamber and the surface of the beating heart, thereby engaging the suction member with the surface of the beating heart, wherein at least a portion of the suction cup conforms to a shape of the surface of the beating heart contacted;maintaining a space, by said second chamber, between said first chamber and said suction line andmoving the suction member while maintaining engagement with the surface of the beating heart, thereby moving the beating heart. 11. The method of claim 10, wherein said moving comprises lifting the beating heart to an elevated position. 12. The method of claim 10, wherein said moving comprises rotating the beating heart. 13. The method of claim 10, further comprising fixing the suction member in a displaced position to maintain the beating heart in the displaced position for performance of the surgical procedure. 14. The method of claim 10, further comprising fixing a support arm connected to said suction member to maintain the beating heart in the desired position, while said suction cup continues to permit multiplanar movements of the heart surface engaged by said suction cup. 15. The method of claim 10, wherein the step of maintaining a space prevents the surface of the beating heart from interfering with suction being applied thereto. 16. A method of manipulating a beating heart to orient the beating heart in a desired position for performing a surgical procedure, said method comprising: providing a suction cup having a first chamber configured to engage the surface of the beating heart, and a second chamber smaller than the first chamber and fluidly connected with the first chamber, the second chamber being further fluidly connected to a source of suction via a suction line connected proximally of said second chamber to said suction cup;contacting a surface of the beating heart with the first chamber;applying suction between the first chamber and the surface of the beating heart, thereby engaging the suction member with the surface of the beating heart, wherein the surface of the beating heart contacted conforms to at least a portion of the suction cup;maintaining a space, by said second chamber, between said first chamber and said suction line andmoving the suction member while maintaining engagement with the surface of the beating heart, thereby moving the beating heart. 17. The method of claim 16, wherein said moving comprises lifting the beating heart to an elevated position. 18. The method of claim 16, wherein said moving comprises rotating the beating heart. 19. The method of claim 16, further comprising fixing the suction member in a displaced position to maintain the beating heart in the displaced position for performance of the surgical procedure. 20. The method of claim 16, further comprising fixing a support arm connected to said suction member to maintain the beating heart in a displaced position, while said suction cup continues to permit multiplanar movements of the heart surface engaged by said suction cup. 21. The method of claim 16, wherein the step of maintaining a space prevents the surface of the beating heart from interfering with suction being applied thereto.
