A dynamic stabilization, motion preservation spinal implant system includes an anchor system, a horizontal rod system and a vertical rod system. The systems are modular so that various constructs and configurations can be created and customized to a patient.

A dynamic spine stabilization system comprising: an anchor system that is adapted to be secured to the vertebra of the spine;the anchor system including first and second anchors that are adapted to be secured to a first vertebra and third and fourth anchors that are adapted to be secured to a second vertebra and said first, second, third and fourth anchors each including a first, second, third, and fourth head respectively;a first horizontal rod system including a first horizontal rod that can be selectively connected to the first head and the second head of the first and second anchors respectively;said first horizontal rod system including a first deflection rod and a second deflection rod, which first and second deflection rods are mounted to said first horizontal rod;the first deflection rod having a first deflectable end capable of deflecting relative to the first horizontal rod by elastic bending of the first deflection rod in response to a load applied to the first deflectable end;the second deflection rod having a second deflectable end capable of deflecting relative to the first horizontal rod by elastic bending of the second deflection rod in response to a load applied to the second deflectable end;a second horizontal rod having a first end portion for mounting to the third head of the third anchor and second end portion for mounting to the second head of the second anchor;the second horizontal rod including a first vertical rod mount located between the first end portion and the second end portion, and a second vertical rod mount located between the second end portion and the first vertical rod mount; and including vertical rod mounts; anda vertical rod system including a first vertical rod mounted to the first vertical rod mount and having a first end connected to the first deflectable end of the first deflection rod, and a second vertical rod mounted to the second vertical rod mount and having a second end connected to the second deflectable end of the second deflection rod. 2. The system of claim 1 including: said first deflection rod being tapered in a direction away from where the first deflection rod is mounted onto said first horizontal rod and said second deflection rod being tapered in a direction away from where the second deflection rod is mounted onto said first horizontal rod. 3. The system of claim 2 wherein said first and second deflection rods are tapered in directions that are away from each other. 4. The system of claim 2 wherein said first horizontal rod has a first end and a second end and said first deflection rod is tapered toward said first end and said second deflection rod is tapered in a direction toward the second end. 5. The system of claim 1 wherein said first deflection rod has a diameter that reduces in size in a first direction as the first deflection rod extends from where the deflection rod is mounted to said first horizontal rod and said second deflection rod has a diameter that reduces in size in a second direction as the second deflection rod extends from where the deflection rod is mounted to said first horizontal rod. 6. The system of claim 5 wherein said first direction and said second direction are opposite each other. 7. The system of claim 1 wherein said first and second deflection rods are comprised of a super elastic material. 8. The system of claim 1 wherein said first and second deflection rods are comprised of an alloy of titanium and nickel. 9. The system of claim 1 wherein: the first end of the first vertical rod is connected to the first deflectable end of the first deflection rod with a first pivotable joint; andthe second end of the second vertical rod is connected to the second deflectable end of the second deflection rod with a second pivotable joint. 10. The system of claim 1 including: a first connector to mount said first end of said first vertical rod to said first deflectable end of said first deflection rod so that said first vertical rod can rotate about said first horizontal rod and said first vertical rod can pivot about said first connector from at least a position that is about perpendicular to said first horizontal rod to a position that is about parallel to said first horizontal rod; anda second connector to mount said second end of said second vertical rod to said second deflectable end of said second deflection rod so that said second vertical rod can rotate about said first horizontal rod and said first vertical rod can pivot about said second connector from at least a position that is about perpendicular to said first horizontal rod to a position that is about parallel to said first horizontal rod. 11. The system of claim 1 including a sleeve that can be placed over at least part of the first horizontal rod system to assist in the implantation of the first horizontal rod system in a patient. 12. The system of claim 1 including a sleeve with a reduced diameter tip and a body, which the body being able to fit over the first horizontal rod and the first deflection rod to assist the implantation of the first horizontal rod system in a patient. 13. The system of claim 1 wherein said anchor system includes an bone anchor which is one of a bone screw and a bone hook. 14. The system of claim 1 wherein said head can move relative to a bone anchor by at least 160 degrees about a first axis, about 40 degrees about a second axis and about 24 degrees about a third axis. 15. The system of claim 1 wherein said anchor system includes a bone anchor with a yoke shaped head and said head of said anchor system is mounted about said yoke shaped head. 16. The system of claim 1 including a compression sphere mounted on said yoke shaped head and with the head of said anchor system mounted about said compression sphere. 17. The system of claim 1 including a first mount that mounts the first deflection rod onto said first horizontal rod such that the first deflectable end of said first deflection rod is pointed toward a first end of said first horizontal rod and said first mount mounts the second deflection rod onto said first horizontal rod such that the second deflectable end of said second deflection rod is pointed toward a second end of the first horizontal rod. 18. A dynamic spine stabilization system comprising: an anchor system that is adapted to be secured to the vertebra of the spine;the anchor system including first and second anchors that are adapted to be secured to a first vertebra and third and fourth anchors that are adapted to be secured to a second vertebra and said first, second, third and fourth anchors each including a first, second, third, and fourth head respectively;a first horizontal rod system including a first horizontal rod that can be selectively connected to the first head and the second head of the first and second anchors respectively;said first horizontal rod system including a first deflection rod and a second deflection rod, which first and second rods are mounted to said first horizontal rod;the first deflection rod having a first deflectable end capable of deflecting relative to the first horizontal rod by elastic bending of the first deflection rod in response to a load applied to the first deflectable end;the second deflection rod having a second deflectable end capable of deflecting relative to the first horizontal rod by elastic bending of the second deflection rod in response to a load applied to the second deflectable end;a first mount that mounts the first deflection rod onto said first horizontal rod such that a the first deflectable end of said first deflection rod is pointed toward a first end of said first horizontal rod and said first mount mounts the second deflection rod onto said first horizontal rod such that the second deflectable end of said second deflection rod is pointed toward a second end of the first horizontal rod;a second horizontal rod including first and second vertical rod mounts; anda vertical rod system including a first vertical rod mounted to the first vertical rod mount and having a first end connected to the first deflectable end of the first deflection rod, and a second vertical rod mounted to the second vertical rod mount and having a second end connected to the second deflectable end of the second deflection rod;a first connector which connects said first end of said first vertical rod to said first deflectable end of said first deflection rod so that said first vertical rod can rotate about said first horizontal rod and said first vertical rod can pivot about said first connector from at least a position that is about perpendicular to said first horizontal rod to a position that is about parallel to said first horizontal rod; anda second connector which connects said second end of said second vertical rod to said second deflectable end of said second deflection rod so that said second vertical rod can rotate about said first horizontal rod and said second vertical rod can pivot about said second connector from at least a position that is about perpendicular to said first horizontal rod to a position that is about parallel to said first horizontal rod. 19. The system of claim 18 wherein said first deflection rod and said second deflection rod are comprised of a super elastic material and are tapered. 20. The system of claim 18 wherein said first and second vertical rods are mounted closer to respective opposite ends of said first horizontal rod than to the middle of said first horizontal rod. 21. The system of claim 18 wherein said first and second vertical rods are mounted laterally so that when implanted in a patient, the first vertical rod is adapted to be located on one side of a spinous process and the second vertical rod is adapted to be located on a side of the spinous process opposite the one side. 22. A dynamic spine stabilization system comprising: an anchor system that is adapted to be secured to the vertebra of the spine,the anchor system including first and second anchors that are adapted to be secured to a first vertebra and third and fourth anchors that are adapted to be secured to a second vertebra and said first, second, third and fourth anchors each including a first, second, third, and fourth saddle heads respectively;each of said first, second, third and fourth anchors include yoke shaped heads to which said saddle heads of said respective first, second, third and four anchors are associated;a first horizontal rod system including a first horizontal rod that can be selectively connected to the first head and the second head of the first and second anchors respectively;said first horizontal rod system including a first deflection rod and a second deflection rod, which first and second deflection rods are mounted to said first horizontal rod;the first deflection rod having a first deflectable end capable of deflecting relative to the first horizontal rod by elastic bending of the first deflection rod in response to a load applied to the first deflectable end;the second deflection rod having a second deflectable end capable of deflecting relative to the first horizontal rod by elastic bending of the second deflection rod in response to a load applied to the second deflectable end;a first mount that mounts the first deflection rod onto said first horizontal rod such that the first deflectable end of said first deflection rod is pointed toward a first end of said first horizontal rod and said first mount that mounts the second deflection rod onto said first horizontal rod such that the second deflectable end of said second deflection rod is pointed toward a second end of the first horizontal rod;a second horizontal rod including first and second vertical rod mounts; anda vertical rod system including a first vertical rod mounted to the first vertical rod mount and having a first end connected by a pivotable joint to the first deflectable end of the first deflection rod, and a second vertical rod mounted to the second vertical rod mount and having a second end connected by a pivotable joint to the second deflectable end of the second deflection rod.
