The method of claim 1, wherein the sensor exchanges digitally encoded data with a medical facility computer network. 3. The method of claim 1, wherein receiving the updated duration of time that the patient has been monitored by the pulse oximeter comprises receiving a present duration of time that the patient currently has been monitored by the pulse oximeter. 4. A monitor comprising: a drive circuit adapted to provide signals to circuitry of a sensor;a first circuit adapted to read digitally encoded data from a memory of the sensor, the digitally encoded data including a duration of time that a patient has been monitored by the monitor and a patient identification code;a second circuit adapted to erase the digitally encoded data from the memory of sensor; anda third circuit adapted to write digitally encoded data to the memory of the sensor, the digitally encoded data including an updated duration of time that the patient has been monitored by the monitor if the patient identification code remains the same from a most recent monitoring session of the monitor or a new duration of time that a different patient has been monitored by the monitor if the patient identification code changes from the most recent monitoring session of the monitor. 5. The monitor of claim 4, comprising a fourth circuit adapted to calculate the duration of time that the patient has been monitored. 6. The monitor of claim 5, comprising a fifth circuit that resets the fourth circuit each time the monitor begins to receive measurement signals from the sensor. 7. The monitor of claim 5, comprising a fifth circuit that resets the fourth circuit each time the monitor is turned off. 8. The monitor of claim 4, comprising a display screen wherein the monitor is configured to display the duration of time that the patient has been monitored by the monitor on the display screen. 9. The monitor of claim 4, wherein the updated duration of time that the patient has been monitored by the monitor comprises the cumulative duration of time the patient has been monitored by the monitor comprising the duration of time the patient has been monitored by the monitor and a subsequent duration of time that the patient has been monitored by the monitor. 10. A method for monitoring data from a sensor, the method comprising: providing signals to drive sensor circuitry in the sensor;reading digitally encoded data from a memory of the sensor, the digitally encoded data including a duration of time that a patient has been monitored by a pulse oximeter and a patient identification code;erasing digitally encoded data from the memory of sensor,writing digitally encoded data to the memory of the sensor, the digitally encoded data including an updated duration of time that the patient has been monitored by the pulse oximeter if the patient identification code remains the same from a most recent monitoring session of the pulse oximeter or a new duration of time that a different patient has been monitored by the pulse oximeter if the patient identification code changes from the most recent monitoring session of the pulse oximeter. 11. The method of claim 10, comprising checking a counter in the pulse oximeter periodically to determine the duration of time that the patient has been monitored by the pulse oximeter. 12. The method of claim 11, comprising resetting the counter each time the pulse oximeter begins to receive data signals from the sensor. 13. The method of claim 11, comprising resetting the counter each time the pulse oximeter is turned off. 14. The method of claim 10, comprising displaying the duration of time that the patient has been monitored by the pulse oximeter on a screen of the pulse oximeter. 15. The method of claim 10, wherein the updated duration of time that the patient has been monitored by the pulse oximeter comprises the cumulative duration of time the patient has been monitored by the pulse oximeter comprising the duration of time the patient has been monitored by the pulse oximeter and a subsequent duration of time that the patient has been monitored by the pulse oximeter. 16. A system for sensing and monitoring blood oxygen levels, the system comprising: an oximeter sensor, the oximeter sensor comprising:a light emitting element;a light detecting element;a memory device storing digitally encoded data, the digitally encoded data including a duration of time that a patient has been monitored and a patient identification code; anda monitor configured to read the digitally encoded data from the sensor, to erase the digitally encoded data from the sensor, and to write replacement digitally encoded data to the memory of the sensor, the replacement digitally encoded data including an updated duration of time that the patient has been monitored if the patient identification code remains the same from a most recent monitoring session of the monitor or a new duration of time that a different patient has been monitored by the monitor if the patient identification code changes from the most recent monitoring session of the monitor. 17. The system of claim 16, comprising a monitor that displays the duration of time that the patient has been monitored. 18. The system of claim 16, wherein the oximeter sensor is configured to exchange the digitally encoded data with a medical facility computer network. 19. The system of claim 16, wherein the updated duration of time that the patient has been monitored by the pulse oximeter comprises the cumulative duration of time the patient has been monitored by the monitor comprising the duration of time the patient has been monitored by the monitor and a subsequent duration of time that the patient has been monitored by the monitor. 20. The system of claim 16, wherein the monitor comprises a counter configured to calculate the duration of time the patient has been monitored. 21. The system of claim 20, wherein the counter is configured to reset each time the monitor begins to receive measurement signals from the oximeter sensor. 22. The system of claim 20, wherein the counter is configured to reset each time the monitor is turned off.
