A clip for closing a puncture hole in a blood vessel comprises a ring having a resiliently expandable circumference and a plurality of barbed prongs extending at least approximately in the same direction from one edge of the ring. A device for deploying such a clip is also described.
1. A method for closing a puncture in a body lumen, the method comprising: advancing a catheter until an indication that the catheter is positioned within a body lumen;increasing a dimension of a clip expander to increase a dimension of a clip, the clip having a ring disposed around the clip expande
1. A method for closing a puncture in a body lumen, the method comprising: advancing a catheter until an indication that the catheter is positioned within a body lumen;increasing a dimension of a clip expander to increase a dimension of a clip, the clip having a ring disposed around the clip expander and prongs projecting towards the front end of the catheter;advancing the catheter to cause the clip to penetrate tissue surrounding the wall of the body lumen;decreasing a dimension of the clip expander; andremoving the catheter from the tissue tract causing the clip to pull the surrounding tissue together substantially sealing the puncture. 2. The method of claim 1, wherein the clip expander further comprises a balloon. 3. The method of claim 2, wherein the balloon includes a shoulder to advance the clip toward a distal end of the catheter. 4. The method of claim 1, wherein the clip expander further comprises a sliding collar. 5. The method of claim 4, wherein the sliding collar further comprises splines. 6. The method of claim 5, further comprising forcing the splines mutually outwards to deform the clip. 7. The method of claim 1, wherein the indication that the catheter is positioned within a body lumen further comprises an indication of blood in a bleed back indicator. 8. The method of claim 1, wherein the increasing a dimension of the clip expander increases a dimension of the ring of the clip. 9. The method of claim 1, wherein advancing the catheter to cause the clip to penetrate tissue surrounding the wall of the body lumen is performed after increasing the dimension of the clip expander to increase a dimension of the clip. 10. The method of claim 9, wherein decreasing the dimension of the clip expander is performed after advancing the catheter to cause the clip to penetrate tissue surrounding the wall of the body lumen. 11. A method for closing a puncture in a body lumen, the method comprising: advancing a catheter until an indication that a clip is positioned a pre-determined distance from a wall of the body lumen;increasing a dimension of a clip expander to increase a dimension of the clip;advancing the catheter to cause the clip to penetrate tissue surrounding the wall of the body lumen;decreasing a dimension of the clip expander; andremoving the catheter from the tissue tract causing the clip to pull the surrounding tissue together substantially sealing the puncture. 12. A method for closing a puncture in a body lumen, the method comprising: advancing a catheter until an indication that a clip is positioned a pre-determined distance from a wall of the body lumen;after advancing the catheter until the indication that the clip is positioned, increasing a dimension of a clip expander to increase a dimension of the clip, the clip expander comprising a sleeve surrounding the body which has one end fixed relative to the body, a section of the sleeve intermediate its ends being slit longitudinally to form a plurality of splines which can be forced mutually outwardly by sliding the other end of the sleeve along the body towards the fixed end of the sleeve, the clip having a ring disposed around the expander and prongs projecting towards the front end of the body, the clip being mounted on the splined section of the sleeve;while increasing the dimension of the clip expander, advancing the catheter to cause the clip to penetrate tissue surrounding the wall of the body lumen;after advancing the catheter to cause the clip to penetrate tissue, decreasing a dimension of the clip expander; andremoving the catheter from the tissue tract causing the clip to pull the surrounding tissue together substantially sealing the puncture.
