1. A method implemented at least partially by an electronic book reader device, the method comprising: under control of one or more electronic book reader device systems configured with executable instructions, displaying, on a display of the electronic book reader device, a list of one or more titles of one or more electronic books stored in memory of the electronic book reader device;providing a status of index generation on the display of the electronic book reader device, the status of index generation indicating whether a text-searchable index exists for the one or more electronic books listed by title on the display and stored in memory of the electronic book reader device; anddisplaying an indicator on the display of the electronic book reader device indicating progress of search index generation of at least one of the electronic books for which a searchable index is currently being generated. 2. The method of claim 1, wherein the status of index generation comprises a status indicator associated with one or more of the electronic books in the list. 3. The method of claim 1, further comprising presenting a priority interface, by which a user may set an order in which the electronic book reader device is to generate search indexes for the electronic books stored in memory of the electronic book reader device. 4. The method of claim 1, further comprising changing a priority order in which the electronic book reader device is to generate search indexes for the electronic books stored in memory of the electronic book reader device. 5. The method of claim 1, further comprising pausing index generation while performing a task. 6. The method of claim 1, further comprising pausing index generation in response to one or more of the following: operation of a button of the device, insertion of memory into the device, receipt of a new electronic item, or updating software of the device. 7. The method of claim 1, further comprising slowing index generation while performing a task. 8. The method of claim 1, further comprising slowing index generation in response to one or more of the following: playing an audio file or executing an application program. 9. The method of claim 1, wherein each search index comprises substantially all of the words in at least one of the electronic books stored in the memory of the electronic book reader device. 10. A handheld electronic book reader device comprising: a processor; andmemory storing an index module and instructions executable on the processor to implement a method comprising: displaying, on a display of the electronic book reader device, a list of one or more titles of one or more electronic books stored in memory of the electronic book reader device;providing a status of index generation on the display of the electronic book reader device, the status of index generation indicating whether a text-searchable index exists for the one or more electronic books listed by title on the display and stored in memory of the electronic book reader device; anddisplaying an indicator on the display of the electronic book reader device indicating progress of search index generation of at least one of the electronic books for which a searchable index is currently being generated. 11. The handheld electronic book reader device of claim 10, wherein the status of index generation comprises a status indicator associated with one or more of the electronic books in the list. 12. The handheld electronic book reader device of claim 10, further comprising presenting a priority interface, by which a user may set an order in which the electronic book reader device is to generate search indexes for the electronic books stored in memory of the electronic book reader device. 13. The handheld electronic book reader device of claim 10, further comprising changing a priority order in which the electronic book reader device is to generate search indexes for the electronic books stored in memory of the electronic book reader device. 14. The handheld electronic book reader device of claim 10, further comprising pausing index generation while performing a task. 15. The handheld electronic book reader device of claim 10, further comprising pausing index generation in response to one or more of the following: operation of a button of the device, insertion of memory into the device, receipt of a new electronic item, or updating software of the device. 16. The handheld electronic book reader device of claim 10, further comprising slowing index generation while performing a task. 17. The handheld electronic book reader device of claim 10, further comprising slowing index generation in response to one or more of the following: playing an audio file or executing an application program. 18. A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium comprising computer-executable instructions which, when executed by a processor, cause the processor to perform acts comprising: displaying, on a display of the electronic book reader device, a list of one or more titles of one or more electronic books stored in memory of the electronic book reader device;providing a status of index generation on the display of the electronic book reader device, the status of index generation indicating whether a text-searchable index exists for the one or more electronic books listed by title on the display and stored in memory of the electronic book reader device; anddisplaying an indicator on the display of the electronic book reader device indicating progress of search index generation of at least one of the electronic books for which a searchable index is currently being generated. 19. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 18, wherein the status of index generation comprises a status indicator associated with one or more of the electronic books in the list. 20. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 18 comprising computer-executable instructions which, when executed by a processor, cause the processor to perform acts further comprising: presenting a priority interface, by which a user may set an order in which the electronic book reader device is to generate search indexes for the electronic books stored in memory of the electronic book reader device. 21. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 18 comprising computer-executable instructions which, when executed by a processor, cause the processor to perform acts further comprising: changing a priority order in which the electronic book reader device is to generate search indexes for the electronic books stored in memory of the electronic book reader device. 22. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 18 comprising computer-executable instructions which, when executed by a processor, cause the processor to perform acts further comprising: pausing index generation while performing a task. 23. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 18 comprising computer-executable instructions which, when executed by a processor, cause the processor to perform acts further comprising: pausing index generation in response to one or more of the following: operation of a button of the device, insertion of memory into the device, receipt of a new electronic item, or updating software of the device. 24. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 18 comprising computer-executable instructions which, when executed by a processor, cause the processor to perform acts further comprising: slowing index generation while performing a task. 25. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 18 comprising computer-executable instructions which, when executed by a processor, cause the processor to perform acts further comprising: slowing index generation in response to one or more of the following: playing an audio file or executing an application program.
