Method and a system for multicast service notification in cellular telephone system to enable the cellular telephone systems to provide both multicast and point-to-point services are disclosed. Several embodiments describe the signaling interaction between an access network and subscriber stations belonging to a multicast group to allow the access network to properly notify the subscriber stations of a the multicast service. Such a signaling further allows the subscriber stations to recognize the multicast service notification to participate in the multicast service.

The apparatus as claimed in claim 11, wherein said processor includes the end indicator into the signal conveyed over the second wireless channel by processing a set of instructions to: include the end indicator into the signal conveyed over the second wireless channel conveying the multicast service. 13. The apparatus as claimed in claim 7, wherein said processor and said storage medium are disposed in a base station. 14. The apparatus as claimed in claim 13, wherein the multicast group identifier is received from an entity of the communication system different from the base station. 15. The method of claim 1, wherein the periodically transmitted message is transmitted at each given interval irrespective of whether data associated with the multicast content subscribed to by the group of mobile stations is available. 16. The apparatus of claim 7, wherein the periodically transmitted message is transmitted at each given interval irrespective of whether data associated with the multicast content subscribed to by the group of mobile stations is available. 17. An apparatus, comprising: means for determining a multicast group identifier that identifies a group of mobile stations subscribed to a particular multicast content; andmeans for periodically transmitting a message on a first wireless channel, the periodically transmitted message corresponding to an overhead message that is transmitted at a given periodic interval;means for determining that data associated with the multicast content subscribed to by the group of mobile stations is available; andwherein, responsive to the determination that the data associated with the multicast content subscribed to by the group of mobile stations is available, the means for periodically transmitting configures the next periodically transmitted message to include the multicast group identifier. 18. A non-transitory computer-readable medium comprising instructions, which, when executed by an apparatus, cause the apparatus to perform operations, the instructions comprising: program code to determine a multicast group identifier that identifies a group of mobile stations subscribed to a particular multicast content; andprogram code to periodically transmit a message on a first wireless channel, the periodically transmitted message corresponding to an overhead message that is transmitted at a given periodic interval;program code to determine that data associated with the multicast content subscribed to by the group of mobile stations is available; andwherein, responsive to the determination that the data associated with the multicast content subscribed to by the group of mobile stations is available, the program code to periodically transmit configures the next periodically transmitted message to include the multicast group identifier. 19. The method of claim 1, wherein each periodically transmitted message is transmitted irrespective of whether data associated with the particular multicast content is available. 20. The method of claim 1, wherein the multicast group identifier is known to each mobile station among the group of mobile stations, and wherein said each mobile station recognizes that data for the group of mobile stations is available based on the inclusion of the multicast group identifier. 21. The method of claim 1, wherein the next periodically transmitted message includes channel assignment information assigning a downlink channel, andwherein the mobile stations can receive the data associated with the multicast content on the assigned downlink channel without responding to the next periodically transmitted message. 22. The method of claim 21, wherein the assigned downlink channel corresponds to a shared channel that is shared by two or more of the mobile stations among the group of mobile stations. 23. The method of claim 1, wherein the mobile stations are required to respond to the next periodically transmitted message before the mobile stations are assigned a downlink channel for the multicast content. 24. The method of claim 23, wherein the downlink channel corresponds to a dedicated channel, with each responding mobile station being assigned its own separate dedicated channel. 25.
