A gaming machine may be activated by an individual player for subsequent play by displaying to the gaming machine, without physical contact with the gaming machine, a card carried by the player. The card carries indicia which may include suitable electronic memory, to be sensed by apparatus associated with the gaming machine, to cause the wireless transfer of individualized data concerning the player from the card to the gaming machine or to a computer network that is associated with the gaming machine. The data is evaluated against a stored database, which database may include identification of the card holder. The data is then evaluated against the stored database, and the gaming machine is activated for subsequent play upon favorable evaluation of the data.

A gaming machine activation system communicatively coupled to a gaming machine, said system comprising: a non-contact user identification device configured to be carried by a user, said user identification device configured to communicate first individualized data concerning the user; a manual actuator communicatively coupled to said gaming machine and configured to receive a physical actuation from the user to enable said gaming machine to accept noncontact electronic data transmission from said user identification device; a first reader communicatively coupled to said gaming machine, said first reader configured to receive the first individualized data from said user identification device; a second reader communicatively coupled to said gaming machine, said second reader configured to receive user verification data from the user; a database containing user identification data communicatively coupled to said gaming device; and a processor configured to: evaluate the first individualized data and the user verification data against the user identification data stored in the database; and upon favorable evaluation of the data, enable said gaming machine for subsequent play by the user. 2. An activation system in accordance with claim 1, wherein said non-contact user identification device comprises an optical character field comprising a user identifier and said first reader comprises an optical character reader configured to determine the user identifier on the user identification device, said processor further configured to determine first individualized data for the user using the user identifier. 3. An activation system in accordance with claim 1, wherein said non-contact user identification device comprises a radio frequency identification (RFID) enabled device and said first reader comprises an RFID reader, said processor further configured to determine first individualized data for the user using an RFID signal received from said RFID enabled device by said RFID reader. 4. An activation system in accordance with claim 1, wherein said non-contact user identification device comprises a power supply, an antenna, and at least one of a radio frequency (RF) transmitter and an RF receiver and said first reader comprises at least one of a radio frequency (RF) transmitter and an RF receiver, said processor further configured to determine first individualized data for the user using an RF signal received from said user identification device by said RF reader. 5. An activation system in accordance with claim 1, wherein said non-contact user identification device comprises at least one of a bracelet, a necklace, a rod, a disc, a box, a sleeve of a shirt or jacket, a hat, a belt, and a belt buckle. 6. An activation system in accordance with claim 1, further comprising a network communicatively coupled to said gaming machine, said network further communicatively coupled to at least one of a network server and a plurality of other gaming machines. 7. An activation system in accordance with claim 6, wherein said processor is located at at least one of said gaming machine and said server. 8. An activation system in accordance with claim 1, wherein said second reader comprises a keypad, said second reader configured to receive a personal identification number (PIN) from the user. 9. An activation system in accordance with claim 1, wherein said second reader comprises a biometric sensor, said second reader configured to receive biometric data from the user. 10. An activation system in accordance with claim 9, wherein said biometric sensor comprises at least one of fingerprint identification, computerized facial recognition, ear or eye pattern recognition, and voice recognition. 11. An activation system in accordance with claim 1, wherein said first reader is configured to transmit second individualized data to said user identification device, second individualized data including at least one of a credit record of the user and electronic cash.
