A method of collecting a sample of milk while milking a succession of animals comprises diverting a portion of milk from an animal into a flowpath leading to an extraction point. The flowpath is dimensioned such that milk flows along the flowpath as a plug occupying the whole of its cross-section and allows some of the milk from the animal to pass the extraction point. Thereafter the milk is transferred into a container or other receiver and at least some of the remaining milk of that animal reaching the extraction point.

1. A method of identifying a number X of animals (which number X may be one or more than one) at least one of which has a predetermined substance from within a larger overall number Y of milking animals, comprising: a step of mixing milk from pluralities of animals together which are first subsets of the overall number such that every animal is included in at least one first subset, to form first test volumes of mixed milk each associated with a said first subset;one or more further steps of mixing milk from one or more other pluralities of animals each of which is a further subset of the overall number, to form one or more further test volumes of mixed milk each associated with a further subset, such that each further subset includes at least one animal of a said first subset but is not identical to that first subset, testing each of the test volumes for the presence of a substance at a concentration greater than a threshold value, the allocation of animals and their milk to first and further subsets being such that identification of the number X of animals, at least one of which contains said substance is accomplished through a total number of tests which is less than the overall number Y divided by the number X. 2. A method according to claim 1 which is a method of identifying an individual animal with mastitis. 3. A method according to claim 1 which is a method of identifying an individual animal with mastitis and the method includes a final step of testing the milk of a number of individual animals which is less than the overall number. 4. A method according to claim 1 in which any test volume made by mixing milk from different animals contains a similar volume from each animal, such that the smallest volume from any one animal is at least 50% of the largest volume from any one animal. 5. An automatic machine for use in performing the method of claim 1 having means for taking subsamples from previously collected samples of milk and mixing subsamples together in accordance with a predetermined plan, so as to form volumes of mixed milk for testing, each associated with a subset of the overall number of animals under control of a stored program. 6. A machine according to claim 5 which also has means for subjecting each of the volumes of mixed milk to a test for the presence of a substance indicative of mastitis. 7. A machine according to claim 5 wherein means for subjecting mixed milk to a test is means for delivering a quantity of the mixed milk to a container with antibodies to the substance immobilised therein, and thereafter adding reagents serving to detect any substance bound to the immobilised antibodies, all under control of the stored program. 8. A machine according to claim 5 which also includes means to read the test results and then take and mix further subsamples from selected previously collected samples of milk to form further volumes of mixed milk in accordance with a predetermined response to the results of tests already performed. 9. A machine according to claim 5 which includes means to read test results and output an indication of the test results, for example to a printer or monitor. 10. A method of identifying an animal with mastitis within an overall number of milking animals, comprising: a step of mixing milk from pluralities of animals together which are first subsets of the overall number such that every animal is included in at least one first subset, to form first test volumes of mixed milk each associated with a said first subset;one or more further steps of mixing milk from one or more other pluralities of animals each of which is a further subset of the overall number, to form one or more further test volumes of mixed milk each associated with a further subset, such that each further subset includes at least one animal of a said first subset but is not identical to that first subset, testing each of the test volumes for a substance indicative of mastitis and optionally also testing milk of some individual animals for a substance indicative of mastitis, the allocation of animals and their milk to first and further subsets being such than an individual animal with mastitis is identified with a total number of tests which is less than the overall number of animals. 11. A method according to claim 10 wherein each subset in which mastitis is detected is notionally divided into smaller subsets which are each a subset of one of the first subsets and mixed milk from these smaller subsets is tested. 12. A method according to claim 10 wherein the first subsets are mutually exclusive. 13. A method of identifying an animal with mastitis within an overall number of milking animals, comprising: a step of mixing milk from pluralities of animals which are first subsets of the overall number such that every animal is included in at least one first subset, to form first test volumes of mixed milk each associated with a said first subset;one or more further steps of mixing milk from one or more other pluralities of animals each of which is a further subset of the overall number, to form one or more further test volumes of mixed milk each associated with a further subset, such that each further subset includes at least one animal of a said first subset but is not identical to that first subset, testing each of the test volumes for a substance indicative of mastitis and optionally also testing milk of some individual animals for a substance indicative of mastitis, the allocation of animals and their milk to first and further subsets being such than an individual animal with mastitis is identified with a total number of tests which is less than the overall number of animals, wherein the overall number of animals is also notionally subdivided to create a collection of second subsets different from the first subsets and such that each animal is included in at least one second subset, milk of the animals in each second subset is mixed to form second test volumes of mixed milk each associated with a said second subset, milk from the first and second test volumes is tested and an affected animal is identified by observing which animal is included in both a first and a second subset which have tested positive for the substance indicative of mastitis. 14. A method of identifying an animal with mastitis within an overall number of milking animals, comprising: a step of mixing milk from pluralities of animals which are first subsets of the overall number such that every animal is included in at least one first subset, to form first test volumes of mixed milk each associated with a said first subset;one or more further steps of mixing milk from one or more other pluralities of animals each of which is a further subset of the overall number, to form one or more further test volumes of mixed milk each associated with a further subset, such that each further subset includes at least one animal of a said first subset but is not identical to that first subset, testing each of the test volumes for a substance indicative of mastitis and optionally also testing milk of some individual animals for a substance indicative of mastitis, the allocation of animals and their milk to first and further subsets being such than an individual animal with mastitis is identified with a total number of tests which is less than the overall number of animals, wherein the overall number of animals is notionally subdivided to create a collection of second subsets different from the first subsets and such that each animal is included in at least one second subset, and also a collection of third subsets different from the first and second subsets and such that each animal is included in at least one third subset, milk of the animals in each second and each third subset is mixed to form second and third test volumes of mixed milk each associated with a second or third subset, milk from the first, second and third test volumes is tested and an affected animal is identified by observing which animal is included in first, second and third subsets which have tested positive for the substance indicative of mastitis.
