A method for producing a ceramic material product. A filler material is provided. The filler material is divided into filler granules collectively having a median diameter approximately 10 microns or less. An amount of carbon is provided. The carbon is divided into carbon particles and the carbon particles are allowed to coat the filler granules. The mixture of carbon-coated filler granules is formed into a selected shape. The formed mixture is placed in a substantial vacuum. The mixture is introduced to a pre-selected amount of silicon and the mixture of carbon-coated filler granules and silicon is heated to a temperature at or above the melting point of the silicon.

The method of claim 1, wherein said grinding of said boron carbide of step (c) and said grinding of said carbon of step (d) is performed in an attrition mill. 3. The method of claim 1, wherein said grinding of said boron carbide of step (c) and said grinding of said carbon of step (d) is performed in the presence of an inert cover. 4. The method of claim 3, wherein said inert cover is selected from the group consisting of liquid ethanol and argon gas. 5. The method of claim 1, further comprising the step of soaking said boron carbide and said carbon in liquid ethanol prior to said grinding of said boron carbide of step (c) and said grinding of said carbon of step (d). 6. The method of claim 1, wherein said steps (c) through (e) comprise the steps of: placing said boron carbide into an attrition mill;placing said carbon into said attrition mill;placing an amount of grinding media into said attrition mill; andagitating said grinding media, said boron carbide, and said carbon within said attrition mill to grind said boron carbide into said boron carbide granules having said multi-modal grain size distribution, to grind said carbon into carbon particles collectively having said median diameter of less than 1 micron, and to substantially coat said boron carbide granules with said carbon particles. 7. The method of claim 6, wherein said grinding media is selected from the group consisting of yttria-stabilized zirconia, steel, and tungsten carbide. 8. The method of claim 7, wherein said grinding media is yttria-stabilized zirconia. 9. The method of claim 9, wherein said silicon particles have an average diameter between 10 microns and 200 nanometers. 11. The method of claim 9, wherein the expanded lattice form of boron carbide has the chemical formula B12(B, Si, C)3. 12. The method of claim 1, further comprising the step of adding an organic binder to said mixture of carbon-coated boron carbide granules prior to step (f) of forming said mixture of carbon-coated filler granules into said shape, whereby said organic binder aids in said forming of said mixture. 13. The method of claim 12, wherein said organic binder is a medium stiffness polyvinyl alcohol. 14. The method of claim 1, further comprising the step of adding an anionic dispersant to said mixture of carbon-coated boron carbide granules prior to step (f) of forming said mixture of carbon-coated boron carbide granules into said shape, whereby said anionic dispersant discourages agglomeration of said carbon particles. 15. The method of claim 14, further comprising the step of adjusting the pH of said mixture of carbon-coated boron carbide granules to basic prior to adding said anionic dispersant to said mixture of carbon-coated boron carbide granules. 16. The method of claim 1, wherein said step (f) of forming said mixture of carbon-coated boron carbide granules into said shape comprises slip casting said carbon-coated boron carbide granules into said shape. 17. The method of claim 16, wherein said slip casting of said carbon-coated boron carbide granules into said shape comprises the steps of: providing a mould defining said shape;providing a liquid, said carbon and said boron carbide being substantially insoluble in said liquid;mixing said liquid with said mixture of carbon-coated boron carbide granules to form a slip;pouring said slip into said mould; andallowing said liquid to separate from said mixture of carbon-coated boron carbide granules to form said mixture of carbon-coated boron carbide granules into said shape. 18. The method of claim 17, wherein said liquid is liquid ethanol. 19. The method of claim 1, wherein said amount of silicon is substantially stoichiometrically balanced with said carbon so as to cause substantially complete chemical reaction of said carbon. 20.
