Systems and methods for dynamically and intelligently estimating analyte data from a continuous analyte sensor, including receiving a data stream, selecting one of a plurality of algorithms, and employing the selected algorithm to estimate analyte values. Additional data processing includes evaluating the selected estimative algorithms, analyzing a variation of the estimated analyte values based on statistical, clinical, or physiological parameters, comparing the estimated analyte values with corresponding measure analyte values, and providing output to a user. Estimation can be used to compensate for time lag, match sensor data with corresponding reference data, warn of upcoming clinical risk, replace erroneous sensor data signals, and provide more timely analyte information encourage proactive behavior and preempt clinical risk.

A method for processing sensor data, the method comprising: receiving sensor data from a continuous analyte sensor;receiving reference data from a reference analyte monitor measured at a reference time period;estimating at least one analyte value based on the sensor data for the reference time period; andforming, using a processor module, at least one matched data pair by matching the reference data to the at least one estimated analyte value,wherein the reference time period corresponds to a future sensor data time period during which no sensor data exists due to at least a physiological time lag between analyte concentrations measured by the continuous glucose sensor and the reference analyte monitor. 2. The method of claim 1, further comprising performing outlier detection based at least in part on the at least one matched data pair. 3. The method of claim 1, further comprising calibrating the sensor data based at least in part on the at least one matched data pair. 4. The method of claim 1, wherein the reference time period corresponds to the future sensor data time period during which no sensor data exists due to the physiological time lag and a computational time lag induced by processing of the sensor data from the continuous glucose sensor. 5. The method of claim 1, wherein the estimating at least one analyte value based on the sensor data for the reference time period includes compensating for a time lag between the reference data and the sensor data. 6. The method of claim 5, wherein the compensating is dynamically adjusted. 7. The method of claim 6, wherein the dynamic adjustment is based on a measured time lag. 8. The method of claim 7, wherein the time lag is measured during a time period of continuous measurement of the analyte concentration. 9. The method of claim 1, wherein the forming, using a processor module, at least one matched data pair by matching the reference data to the estimated analyte value comprises forming a plurality of matched data pairs by matching a plurality a reference data points with a plurality of sensor data points over a predetermined time period. 10. The method of claim 9, further comprising determining a best matched pair by evaluating the plurality of matched data pairs. 11. The method of claim 10, wherein the evaluating the plurality of matched data pairs is based at least in part on a statistical deviation and/or clinical risk analysis. 12. The method of claim 1, wherein the continuous analyte sensor is continuous glucose sensor. 13. The method of claim 12, wherein the continuous glucose sensor comprises a working electrode at least partially implanted in a host over a time period of continuous implantation. 14. A system for processing sensor data, the system comprising: a sensor input module operatively connected to a continuous analyte sensor that receives sensor data from the continuous analyte sensor;a reference input module that receives reference data from a reference analyte monitor, the reference data measured at a reference time period; anda processor module configured to estimate at least one analyte value based on the sensor data for the reference time period, and to form at least one matched data pair by matching the reference data to the at least one estimated analyte value, wherein the reference time period corresponds to a future sensor data time period during which no sensor data exists due to a physiological time lag between analyte concentrations measured by the continuous glucose sensor and the reference anal monitor. 15. The system of claim 14, wherein the processor module is further configured to perform outlier detection based at least in part on the at least one matched data pair. 16. The system of claim 14, wherein the processor module is further configured to calibrate the sensor data based at least in part on the at least one matched data pair. 17. The system of claim 14, wherein the reference time period corresponds to the future sensor data time period during which no sensor data exists due to the physiological time lay and a computational time lay induced by data from the continuous analyte sensor. 18. The system of claim 14, wherein the processor module is configured to estimate the at least one analyte value based on the sensor data for the reference time period using a time lag compensation. 19. The system of claim 14, wherein the processor module is configured to dynamically compensate for the time lag. 20. The system of claim 19, wherein the dynamic compensation is based on a measured time lag. 21. The system of claim 20, wherein the processor module is configured to measure the time lag. 22. The system of claim 14, wherein the processor module is configured to form the at least one matched data pair by matching the reference data to the estimated analyte value forms based on a plurality of matched data pairs by matching a plurality a reference sensor data point with a plurality of sensor data points over a predetermined time period. 23. The system of claim 22, wherein the processor module is further configured to determine a best matched pair by evaluating the plurality of matched data pairs. 24. The system of claim 23, wherein the processor module is configured to determine the best matched pair by evaluating the plurality of matched data pairs is based at least in part on a statistical deviation and/or clinical risk analysis. 25. The system of claim 14, wherein the continuous analyte sensor is continuous glucose sensor. 26. The system of claim 25, wherein the continuous glucose sensor comprises a working electrode configured for at least partial implantation in a host over a time period of continuous implantation.
