A network appliance (100) is provided having a network controller subsystem (110) for coupling the appliance (100) to a data network for providing and receiving data packets to and from a packet data network. A digital signal processing subsystem (120) is coupled to the network controller subsystem (110). A signal conversion subsystem (130) is coupled to the digital signal processing subsystem (120) and a user interface subsystem (160) is coupled to both the signal conversion subsystem (130) and the digital signal processing subsystem (120). The digital signal processing subsystem (120) operates under the control of a computer program which is capable of detecting incoming calls, initiating call sessions, and preferably, implementing advanced telephony features.

A non-transient computer-readable medium for operating a network device having a digital signal processing subsystem comprising a digital signal processor and one or more memory devices coupled to said digital signal processor, comprising: a first layer of instructions stored in said one or more memory devices of said digital signal processing subsystem operable to provide interrupt services and low-level functions;a second layer of instructions stored in said one or more memory devices of said digital signal processing subsystem comprising an operating system and instructions operable to perform process level functions; anda third layer of instructions stored in said one or more memory devices of said digital signal processing subsystem operable to perform application-specific tasks and high-level functions, including Session Initiation Protocol functions for detecting and initiating call sessions and performing call session control. 2. The computer-readable medium for operating a network device according to claim 1, wherein said network device further comprises a microphone and a speaker, each coupled to said digital signal processor, and wherein said computer-readable medium implements a monitor feature, wherein on detection of a call directed to said network device from a caller, said microphone is automatically enabled and said speaker is automatically disabled during said call. 3. The computer-readable medium for operating a network device according to claim 2, wherein identifying criteria of at least one approved caller is stored in said one or more memory devices and said computer-readable medium is operable to activate said monitor feature after receipt of said identifying criteria from a caller in response to said caller being a predetermined approved caller. 4. The computer-readable medium for operating a network device of claim 3, wherein said identifying criteria are selected from the group including name, SIP address and password. 5. The computer-readable medium for operating a network device according to claim 1, wherein said computer-readable medium implements a call forwarding feature, wherein at least one forwarding SIP address is stored in said one or more memory devices, one of said forwarding SIP addresses is selectable by a user, and wherein on detection of a call directed to said device from a caller, said computer-readable medium is operable to redirect said call to said selected forwarding SIP address. 6. The computer-readable medium for operating a network device according to claim 5, wherein said computer-readable medium is operable to activate said call forwarding feature for a predetermined time in response to an input from said user. 7. The computer-readable medium for operating a network device according to claim 5, wherein a signal from a sensor for detecting the an absence of a human being is provided to said computer-readable medium as an input and wherein said computer-readable medium is operable to selectively activate said call forwarding feature in response to said signal. 8. The computer-readable medium for operating a network device according to claim 5, wherein said computer-readable medium is operable to selectively activate said call forwarding feature based on a SIP address of said caller. 9. The computer-readable medium for operating a network device according to claim 5, wherein said computer-readable medium is operable to selectively activate said call forwarding feature based on a time of day. 10. The computer-readable medium for operating a network device according to claim 5, wherein said computer-readable medium is operable to selectively activate said call forwarding feature based on a day of the week. 11. The computer-readable medium for operating a network device according to claim 1, wherein said computer-readable medium is operable to implement a streaming media mode wherein streaming data is received from a network and is converted to perceptible signals by said network device. 12. The computer-readable medium for operating a network device according to claim 11, wherein said computer-readable medium is operable to receive streaming data from said network and to convert said streaming data to audio signals, when no call session is in progress. 13. The computer-readable medium for operating a network device according to claim 12, wherein said computer-readable medium is operable to revert out of streaming media mode in the event a new call session is initiated. 14. The computer-readable medium for operating a network device according to claim 11 wherein said computer-readable medium is operable to selectively receive streaming data from said network and to convert said streaming data to audio signals. 15. The computer-readable medium for operating a network device according to claim 11, wherein said computer-readable medium is operable to receive said streaming data from said network and to selectively forward said streaming data to another device during a call session where said streaming data is convertible to perceptible signals by said another device. 16. The computer-readable medium for operating a network device according to claim 11, wherein said network device includes a video display coupled to said digital signal processor, wherein streaming data includes streaming video data, and wherein said computer-readable medium is operable to selectively receive said streaming video data from said network and to convert said streaming video data to video signals and to provide said video signals to said video display. 17. The computer-readable medium for operating a network device of claim 1, wherein said network device further comprises a display screen and a user interface coupled to said digital signal processor, wherein said computer-readable medium is operable to detect SIP address addresses of callers and to store a plurality of caller SIP addresses in said one or more memory devices, and wherein said computer-readable medium is operable to display said plurality of SIP addresses on said display screen and to receive selection of said plurality of SIP addresses in response to an input from said user interface. 18. The computer-readable medium for operating a network device of claim 1, wherein said network device further comprises a display screen and a user interface coupled to said digital signal processor, wherein said computer-readable medium is operable to store a plurality of called SIP addresses corresponding to addresses of successfully initiated call sessions stored in said one or more memory devices, and wherein said computer-readable medium is operable to display said called SIP addresses on said display screen and to receive selection of said called SIP addresses in response to an input from said user interface. 19. A network appliance for providing packetized data over a packet data network, comprising: a network controller subsystem coupled to said packet data network;a digital signal processing subsystem coupled to said network controller subsystem, the digital signal processing subsystem further comprising a computer program for detecting incoming calls and initiating call sessions, wherein the computer program comprises: a first layer of instructions for providing interrupt services and low-level functions;a second layer of instructions comprising an operating system and instructions for performing process level functions; anda third layer of instructions for performing application-specific tasks and high-level functions, including Session Initiation Protocol functions for detecting and initiating call sessions and performing call session control;a signal conversion subsystem coupled to said digital signal processing subsystem; anda user interface subsystem coupled to both the signal conversion subsystem and said digital signal processing subsystem. 20. The network appliance according to claim 19, wherein said digital signal processing subsystem comprises a digital signal processor and one or more memory devices coupled to said digital signal processor.
