An aerodynamic drag reducing apparatus for use with vehicles having downstream surfaces that are not streamlined. The apparatus includes folding panels that extend rearward for use in a drag reducing configuration and collapse for use in a space saving configuration.

An aerodynamic drag reducing device adapted for mounting on a rear end of a vehicle, the aerodynamic drag reducing device moveable between a stowed configuration and a deployed configuration, the aerodynamic drag reducing device comprising: a side panel extending between a top edge and a bottom edge, the side panel including a first edge that extends between the top edge and the bottom edge and the side panel pivotally mounted to the vehicle adjacent the first edge of the side panel;a top panel arrangement including a first edge and a second edge, the top panel arrangement pivotally mounted to the vehicle adjacent the first edge of the top panel arrangement and the top panel arrangement pivotally connected to the side panel adjacent the top edge of the side panel and adjacent the second edge of the top panel arrangement; anda linkage arrangement including a first member and a second member, the first member pivotally mounted to the vehicle, the second member pivotally mounted to the side panel adjacent the bottom edge, and the first member and the second member pivotally connected to each other. 2. The aerodynamic drag reducing device of claim 1, wherein the side panel further includes a second edge opposite the first edge of the side panel, the second edge of the side panel extending between the top edge and the bottom edge of the side panel, the second edge of the side panel defining at least a portion of a rear end of the aerodynamic drag reducing device when the aerodynamic drag reducing device is in the deployed configuration. 3. The aerodynamic drag reducing device of claim 1, wherein the second member of the linkage arrangement is pivotally mounted to the side panel at the bottom edge. 4. The aerodynamic drag reducing device of claim 2, wherein the second member of the linkage arrangement is pivotally mounted to the side panel adjacent the second edge of the side panel. 5. The aerodynamic drag reducing device of claim 4, wherein the second member of the linkage arrangement is pivotally mounted to the side panel at the bottom edge. 6. The aerodynamic drag reducing device of claim 1, wherein the rear end of the vehicle includes a door, wherein the top panel arrangement is pivotally mounted to the door of the vehicle, and wherein the first member of the linkage arrangement is pivotally mounted to the door of the vehicle. 7. The aerodynamic drag reducing device of claim 1, wherein the side panel covers at least a portion of the linkage arrangement when the aerodynamic drag reducing device is in the stowed configuration. 8. The aerodynamic drag reducing device of claim 1, wherein the top edge and the first edge of the side panel are straight edges and wherein the side panel is substantially planar. 9. The aerodynamic drag reducing device of claim 1, wherein the side panel extends inwardly as the side panel extends rearwardly away from the vehicle when the aerodynamic drag reducing device is in the deployed configuration and wherein the top panel arrangement also extends inwardly as the top panel arrangement extends rearwardly away from the vehicle when the aerodynamic drag reducing device is in the deployed configuration. 10. The aerodynamic drag reducing device of claim 1, wherein the side panel, the top panel arrangement, and the linkage arrangement move together in a coordinated manner when the aerodynamic drag reducing device is moved between the stowed configuration and the deployed configuration. 11. An aerodynamic drag reducing device adapted for mounting on a rear end of a vehicle, the aerodynamic drag reducing device moveable between a stowed configuration and a deployed configuration, the aerodynamic drag reducing device comprising: a side panel extending between a top edge and a bottom, the side panel including a first edge that extends between the top edge and the bottom, the side panel pivotally mounted to the vehicle adjacent the first edge of the side panel, the side panel further including a second edge opposite the first edge of the side panel, the second edge of the side panel extending between the top edge and the bottom of the side panel, the second edge of the side panel defining at least a portion of a rear end of the aerodynamic drag reducing device when the aerodynamic drag reducing device is in the deployed configuration;a top panel arrangement including a first edge and a second edge, the top panel arrangement pivotally mounted to the vehicle adjacent the first edge of the top panel arrangement and the top panel arrangement pivotally connected to the side panel adjacent the top edge of the side panel; anda linkage arrangement including a first member and a second member, the first member pivotally mounted to the vehicle, the second member pivotally mounted to the side panel adjacent the second edge of the side panel, and the first member and the second member pivotally connected to each other. 12. The aerodynamic drag reducing device of claim 11, wherein the side panel is substantially planar. 13. The aerodynamic drag reducing device of claim 11, wherein the top edge and the first edge of the side panel are straight edges. 14. The aerodynamic drag reducing device of claim 11, wherein the side panel is pivotally mounted to the vehicle at the first edge of the side panel. 15. The aerodynamic drag reducing device of claim 11, wherein the top panel arrangement is pivotally mounted to the vehicle at the first edge of the top panel arrangement. 16. The aerodynamic drag reducing device of claim 11, wherein the second member of the linkage arrangement is pivotally mounted to the side panel at the second edge of the side panel. 17. The aerodynamic drag reducing device of claim 11, wherein the second member of the linkage arrangement is pivotally mounted to the side panel adjacent the bottom of the side panel. 18. The aerodynamic drag reducing device of claim 11, wherein the second member of the linkage arrangement is pivotally mounted to the side panel at the bottom of the side panel. 19. The aerodynamic drag reducing device of claim 16, wherein the second member of the linkage arrangement is pivotally mounted to the side panel at the bottom of the side panel. 20. The aerodynamic drag reducing device of claim 11, wherein the rear end of the vehicle includes a door and the top panel arrangement is pivotally mounted to the door of the vehicle. 21. The aerodynamic drag reducing device of claim 20, wherein the first member of the linkage arrangement is pivotally mounted to the door of the vehicle. 22. The aerodynamic drag reducing device of claim 11, wherein the side panel covers at least a portion of the linkage arrangement when the aerodynamic drag reducing device is in the stowed configuration. 23. The aerodynamic drag reducing device of claim 11, wherein the side panel covers the linkage arrangement when the aerodynamic drag reducing device is in the stowed configuration. 24. The aerodynamic drag reducing device of claim 11, wherein the top edge and the first edge of the side panel and the first edge and the second edge of the top panel arrangement are straight edges. 25. The aerodynamic drag reducing device of claim 11, wherein the side panel extends inwardly as the side panel extends rearwardly away from the vehicle when the aerodynamic drag reducing device is in the deployed configuration. 26. The aerodynamic drag reducing device of claim 25, wherein the top panel arrangement also extends inwardly as the top panel arrangement extends rearwardly away from the vehicle when the aerodynamic drag reducing device is in the deployed configuration. 27. The aerodynamic drag reducing device of claim 11, wherein the side panel, the top panel arrangement, and the linkage arrangement move together in a coordinated manner when the aerodynamic drag reducing device is moved between the stowed configuration and the deployed configuration. 28. The aerodynamic drag reducing device of claim 11, wherein the first member of the linkage arrangement is hingedly mounted to the vehicle. 29. The aerodynamic drag reducing device of claim 11, wherein the second member of the linkage arrangement is hingedly mounted to the side panel. 30. The aerodynamic drag reducing device of claim 11, wherein the first member and the second member are hingedly connected to each other. 31. An aerodynamic drag reducing device adapted for mounting on a rear end of a vehicle, the aerodynamic drag reducing device moveable between a stowed configuration and a deployed configuration, the aerodynamic drag reducing device comprising: a substantially planar side panel extending between a top edge and a bottom, the side panel including a first edge that extends between the top edge and the bottom and the side panel pivotally mounted to the vehicle adjacent the first edge of the side panel; anda top panel arrangement including a first edge and a second edge, the top panel arrangement pivotally mounted to the vehicle adjacent the first edge of the top panel arrangement and the top panel arrangement pivotally connected to the side panel adjacent the top edge of the side panel;wherein the side panel extends inwardly as the side panel extends rearwardly away from the vehicle when the aerodynamic drag reducing device is in the deployed configuration. 32. The aerodynamic drag reducing device of claim 31, wherein the side panel further includes a second edge opposite the first edge of the side panel, the second edge of the side panel extending between the top edge and the bottom of the side panel, the second edge of the side panel defining at least a portion of a rear end of the aerodynamic drag reducing device when the aerodynamic drag reducing device is in the deployed configuration. 33. The aerodynamic drag reducing device of claim 32, further comprising a linkage arrangement including a first member and a second member, the first member pivotally mounted to the vehicle, the second member pivotally mounted to the side panel adjacent the second edge of the side panel, and the first member and the second member pivotally connected to each other. 34. The aerodynamic drag reducing device of claim 31, wherein the side panel and the top panel arrangement move together in a coordinated manner when the aerodynamic drag reducing device is moved between the stowed configuration and the deployed configuration. 35. The aerodynamic drag reducing device of claim 31, wherein at least one of the edges includes at least one cut. 36. The aerodynamic drag reducing device of claim 35, wherein the first edge of the side panel includes at least one of the at least one cut. 37. The aerodynamic drag reducing device of claim 36, wherein the rear end of the vehicle includes a door mounted on at least one hinge, wherein the at least one cut is a clearance cut adapted to avoid interference between the side panel and the at least one hinge of the door. 38. The aerodynamic drag reducing device of claim 2, wherein at least one of the edges includes at least one cut. 39. The aerodynamic drag reducing device of claim 38, wherein the first edge of the side panel includes at least one of the at least one cut. 40. The aerodynamic drag reducing device of claim 39, wherein the rear end of the vehicle includes a door mounted on at least one hinge, wherein the at least one cut is a clearance cut adapted to avoid interference between the side panel and the at least one hinge of the door. 41. The aerodynamic drag reducing device of claim 41, wherein the first edge of the side panel includes at least one of the at least one cut. 43.
