One embodiment of the present invention provides a lead electrode assembly for use with an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator subcutaneously implanted outside the ribcage between the third and twelfth ribs comprising the electrode.

A lead electrode assembly for use in an implantable defibrillator system, the lead electrode assembly comprising: an elongated lead having a first end for coupling with an implantable defibrillator and a second end for carrying an electrode, with one or more electrical conductors extending therein; andan electrode assembly comprising an electrode having first and second faces, a backing layer adjacent to the second face of the electrode and a cover extending over the backing layer and covering a portion of the first face of the electrode;wherein the electrode assembly is at the second end of the elongated lead;wherein the backing layer is precurved to create a radius of curvature of the electrode matching a desired portion of patient anatomy; andwherein the desired portion of patient anatomy is a selected region of the exterior of a patient's ribs. 2. The lead electrode assembly of claim 1 wherein the cover is a molded body. 3. The lead electrode assembly of claim 1 wherein the electrode assembly includes an appendage extending opposite of the first face of the electrode in the shape of a fin. 4. The lead electrode assembly of claim 3 wherein the appendage includes a pinhole for receiving a pin of an insertion tool configured to emplace the lead electrode assembly subcutaneously over the ribcage of a patient. 5. The lead electrode assembly of claim 3 wherein the appendage is formed of portions of the cover and backing layer. 6. The lead electrode assembly of claim 3 wherein the backing layer includes a fin extending opposite of the electrode, and the cover extends over the fin of the backing layer. 7. The lead electrode assembly of claim 6 wherein the backing layer fin and a portion of the cover that extends over the backing layer fin define a pinhole therethrough. 8. The lead electrode assembly of claim 1 wherein the electrode assembly further comprises stitching securing the cover, backing layer and electrode together. 9. A lead electrode assembly for use in an implantable defibrillator system, the lead electrode assembly comprising: an elongated lead having a first end for coupling with an implantable defibrillator and a second end for carrying an electrode, with one or more electrical conductors extending therein;an electrode assembly comprising an electrode having first and second faces, a backing layer adjacent to the second face of the electrode and a cover extending over the backing layer and covering a portion of the first face of the electrode; andengagement means extending from the cover opposite the first face of the electrode, the engagement means configured to allow engagement with an insertion tool to facilitate placement of the lead electrode assembly subcutaneously over the ribcage of a patient;wherein the electrode assembly is at the second end of the elongated lead; andwherein the backing layer is precurved to create a radius of curvature of the electrode matching a desired portion of patient anatomy. 10. The lead electrode assembly of claim 9 wherein the desired portion of patient anatomy is a selected region of the exterior of a patient's ribs. 11. An implantable defibrillator comprising a canister housing operational circuitry for the implantable defibrillator and a lead electrode assembly coupled to the canister, wherein the lead electrode assembly comprises: an elongated lead having a first end at the canister and a second end for carrying an electrode, with one or more electrical conductors extending therein; andan electrode assembly comprising an electrode having first and second faces, a backing layer adjacent to the second face of the electrode and a cover extending over the backing layer and covering a portion of the first face of the electrode;wherein the electrode assembly is at the second end of the elongated lead;wherein the backing layer is precurved to create a radius of curvature of the electrode matching a desired portion of patient anatomy; andwherein the desired portion of patient anatomy is a selected region of the exterior of a patient's ribs. 12. The implantable defibrillator of claim 11 wherein the cover is a molded body. 13. The implantable defibrillator of claim 11 wherein the electrode assembly includes an appendage extending opposite of the first face of the electrode in the shape of a fin. 14. The implantable defibrillator of claim 13 wherein the appendage includes a pinhole for receiving a pin of an insertion tool configured to emplace the lead electrode assembly subcutaneously over the ribcage of a patient. 15. The implantable defibrillator of claim 13 wherein the appendage is formed of portions of the cover and backing layer. 16. The lead electrode assembly of claim 13 wherein the backing layer includes a fin extending opposite of the electrode, and the cover extends over the fin of the backing layer. 17. The implantable defibrillator of claim 16 wherein the backing layer fin and a portion of the cover that extends over the backing layer fin define a pinhole therethrough. 18. The implantable defibrillator of claim 11 wherein the electrode assembly further comprises stitching securing the cover, backing layer and electrode together. 19. An implantable defibrillator comprising a canister housing operational circuitry for the implantable defibrillator and a lead electrode assembly coupled to the canister, wherein the lead electrode assembly comprises: an elongated lead having a first end at the canister and a second end for carrying an electrode, with one or more electrical conductors extending therein;an electrode assembly comprising an electrode having first and second faces, a backing layer adjacent to the second face of the electrode and a cover extending over the backing layer and covering a portion of the first face of the electrode; andengagement means extending from the cover opposite the first face of the electrode, the engagement means configured to allow engagement with an insertion tool to facilitate placement of the lead electrode assembly subcutaneously over the ribcage of a patient;wherein the electrode assembly is at the second end of the elongated lead; andwherein the backing layer is precurved to create a radius of curvature of the electrode matching a desired portion of patient anatomy. 20. The implantable defibrillator of claim 19 wherein the desired portion of patient anatomy is a selected region of the exterior of a patient's ribs.
