An organ perfusion apparatus and method monitor, sustain and/or restore viability of organs and preserve organs for storage and/or transport. Other apparatus include an organ transporter, an organ cassette and an organ diagnostic device. The method includes perfusing the organ at hypothermic and/or normothermic temperatures, preferably after hypothermic organ flushing for organ transport and/or storage. The method can be practiced with prior or subsequent static or perfusion hypothermic exposure of the organ. Organ viability is restored by restoring high energy nucleotide (e.g., ATP) levels by perfusing the organ with a medical fluid, such as an oxygenated cross-linked hemoglobin-based bicarbonate medical fluid, at normothermic temperatures. In perfusion, organ perfusion pressure is preferably controlled in response to a sensor disposed in an end of tubing placed in the organ, by a pneumatically pressurized medical fluid reservoir, providing perfusion pressure fine tuning, overpressurization prevention and emergency flow cut-off. In the hypothermic mode, the organ is perfused with a medical fluid, preferably a simple crystalloid solution containing antioxidants, intermittently or in slow continuous flow. The medical fluid may be fed into the organ from an intermediary tank having a low pressure head to avoid organ overpressurization. Preventing overpressurization prevents or reduces damage to vascular endothelial lining and to organ tissue in general. Viability of the organ may be automatically monitored, preferably by monitoring characteristics of the medical fluid perfusate. The perfusion process can be automatically controlled using a control program.

1. A method of determining transport and/or storage parameters for maintaining viability of at least one organ in at least one device selected from an organ transporter, perfusion apparatus, cassette, and organ diagnostic apparatus, the method comprising: forming a data record by uploading to a processor compiled data comprising: data relating to events occurring while organs were transported and/or stored in at least one device selected from an organ transporter, perfusion apparatus, cassette, and organ diagnostic apparatus, anddata relating to outcomes of transplantation of said organs; andusing the same processor or a different processor to determine transport and/or storage parameters of the at least one device or a different device, based on the data record, in order to maintain viability of at least one other organ. 2. The method of claim 1, further comprising: disseminating the data record. 3. The method of claim 1, further comprising: storing the data record in a database. 4. The method of claim 1, further comprising: transmitting the data record over a network. 5. The method of claim 4, wherein the network is at least one of a local area network and the World Wide Web. 6. The method of claim 1, wherein the same processor or different processor at least one of manages, tracks, monitors, and diagnoses the at least one other organ. 7. The method of claim 1, wherein the at least one same or different organ transporter is configured with a wireless communications setup to provide real-time data transfer. 8. The method of claim 1, further comprising: producing an organ viability index for the at least one other organ. 9. The method of claim 1, wherein the data record comprises: an organ sub-record,a donor sub-record,a perfusion sub-record, anda recipient sub-record. 10. The method of claim 1, wherein the data relating to outcomes of transplantation of said organs includes: data relating to outcomes of transplantation where said organs were harvested from a donor under beating heart conditions. 11. The method of claim 10, wherein the at least one other organ for which the transport and/or storage parameters are being determined for is harvested from a donor under beating heart conditions. 12. The method of claim 11, wherein the at least one other organ is selected from the group consisting of a kidney, heart, liver, small intestine, and lung. 13. The method of claim 1, wherein the data relating to outcomes of transplantation of said organs includes: data relating to outcomes of transplantation where said organs were harvested from a donor under non-beating heart conditions. 14. The method of claim 13, wherein the least one other organ for which the transport and/or storage parameters are being determined for is harvested from a donor under non-beating heart conditions. 15. The method of claim 14, wherein the at least one other organ selected from the group consisting of a kidney, heart, liver, small intestine, and lung. 16. The method of claim 1, wherein the data relating to outcomes of transplantation of said organs includes: data relating to outcomes of transplantation where said organs were harvested from a donor under beating heart conditions, anddata relating to outcomes of transplantation where said organs were harvested from a donor under non-beating heart conditions. 17. The method of claim 1, wherein the transport and/or storage parameters of the at least one device or a different device comprises at least one member selected from the group consisting of a perfusate flow rate, a perfusion mode, a medical fluid perfusate temperature, a medical fluid perfusate composition, an infusion pressure, a flow resistance, an infusion temperature, a pH level of a medical fluid perfusate, a pO2 level of a medical fluid perfusate, a pCO2 level of a medical fluid perfusate, a LDH level of a medical fluid perfusate, a T/GST level of a medical fluid perfusate, a Tprotein level of a medical fluid perfusate, a lactate level of a medical fluid perfusate, a glucose level of a medical fluid perfusate, a base excess level of a medical fluid perfusate, an ionized calcium level of a medical fluid perfusate, and a bath temperature.
