An electroacupuncture system comprising a source of electrical potential, a probe electrically connected to the electrical potential source and constructed for selectively contacting skin of a living body and applying the electrical potential to acupuncture meridians on the body, and a processing apparatus in communication with the probe and the electrical potential source, the processing apparatus being adapted to periodically calculate electrical resistance of the skin while the electrical potential is being applied to the acupuncture meridians, the processing apparatus being adapted to store calculated electrical resistance at the acupuncture meridians on the body, the processing apparatus including a program adapted to use the stored calculated electrical resistance to calculate a single balance number based on a combination of values derived from the stored calculated electrical resistances from different ones of the acupuncture meridians, the balance number being indicative of an overall meridian energy balance in the entire body, the processing apparatus including an output device for conveying the calculated balance number. 2. An electroacupuncture system as set forth in claim 1 wherein the processing apparatus is programmed to calculate the balance number on a scale from 0-100. 3. An electroacupuncture system as set forth in claim 2 wherein the processing apparatus is configured to calculate the balance number by storing penalty points selected by the program according to a function of the variance of measured resistance at the meridians from a target number to be subtracted from a base balance number of 100. 4. A method of assessing an acupuncture meridian energy balance number for a patient comprising: applying an electric potential to the patient at acupuncture meridians and measuring the resistance of the patient's skin at the meridians to acquire electrical resistance values for the meridians;comparing the acquired resistance values to at least one of: (a) other acquired resistance values and (b) stored desired meridian resistance values;assigning scores to results of the comparisons and combining the scores to calculate a single meridian energy balance number based on a combination of values derived from the comparisons of the resistance values at different ones of the acupuncture meridians and indicative of an overall meridian energy balance in the entire body; anddisplaying an indication of the acupuncture meridian balance of the patient based on the calculated meridian energy balance number. 5. A method as set forth in claim 4 wherein comparing the acquired resistance values comprises comparing the acquired resistance values both to other acquired resistance values and to stored desired meridian resistance values. 6. A method as set forth in claim 4 wherein calculating the single meridian energy balance number comprises subtracting the scores from a base energy balance number. 7. An electroacupuncture system comprising a source of electrical potential, a probe electrically connected to the electrical potential source and constructed for selectively contacting skin of a living body and applying the electrical potential to the skin, processing apparatus in communication with the probe and the electrical potential source, the processing apparatus being adapted to periodically calculate electrical resistance of the skin while the electrical potential is being applied to the skin, the processing apparatus being adapted to store calculated electrical resistance for acupuncture meridians on the body, the processing apparatus including a program adapted to use the stored calculated electrical resistance to calculate a balance number indicative of the variance of skin resistance measurements at the meridians from desired measurements, the processing apparatus including an output device for conveying the calculated balance number, wherein the processing apparatus is programmed to calculate the balance number on a scale from 0-100, and wherein the processing apparatus is programmed to calculate the balance number by storing penalty points selected by the program according to a function of the variance of measured resistance at the meridians from a target number to be subtracted from a base balance number of 100.
