A dynamic bone anchor for anchoring a spine stabilization assembly which supports the spine while providing for the preservation of spinal motion. The dynamic bone anchor provides load sharing while preserving range of motion and reducing stress exerted upon the bone anchors and spinal anatomy. The dynamic bone anchor includes a deflectable post connected by a ball-joint to a threaded anchor. Deflection of the deflectable post is controlled by a compliant ring. The force/deflection properties of the dynamic bone anchor may be adapted to the anatomy and functional requirements of the patient. The dynamic bone anchor may be used as a component of a dynamic stabilization system which supports the spine while providing for the preservation of spinal motion.

The medical device of claim 1, wherein: the bore has a circumferential groove therein; andthe compliant ring is retained in said circumferential groove. 3. The medical device of claim 2, wherein the compliant ring has an external diameter larger than the bore diameter and internal diameter less than the bore diameter. 4. The medical device of claim 3 wherein the deflectable post has a post diameter approximately equal to the internal diameter of the compliant ring. 5. The medical device of claim 1, wherein said tubular cap comprises a limit surface positioned to contact the deflectable post after a predetermined amount of deflection of the post axis away from alignment with the longitudinal axis of the bone screw. 6. The medical device of claim 1, wherein: said tubular cap comprises a limit surface positioned to contact the deflectable post after a predetermined amount of deflection of the post axis away from alignment with the longitudinal axis of the bone screw; andthe compliant ring is shaped and positioned to prevent the compliant ring from being pinched between the deflectable post and the limit surface. 7. The medical device of claim 1, wherein the compliant ring has a circular radial section. 8. The medical device of claim 1, wherein the compliant ring has a substantially square radial section. 9. The medical device of claim 1, wherein the tubular cap has a plurality of external surface features adapted to provide for engagement of the tubular cap by at least one of an implantation tool and a connector. 10. A spinal implant comprising: an elongate bone anchor having a longitudinal axis extending between a threaded distal end and a proximal end;a post having a distal end and a proximal end and a post axis extending therebetween;a joint which secures the distal end of the post to the proximal end of the elongate bone anchor such that the post can pivot relative to the elongate bone anchor;a tubular cap having a bore extending completely therethrough along a bore axis, the tubular cap extending over a distal portion of the post, wherein the tubular cap has a fastener which secures the tubular cap to the proximal end of the elongate bone anchor such that the bore axis is aligned with the longitudinal axis of the elongate bone anchor; anda compliant ring disposed in the bore in contact with the post and the tubular cap whereby the compliant ring biases the post axis into alignment with the longitudinal axis of the elongate bone anchor. 11.
