A composition comprising a substrate, an organic ion, and a metal binding agent, wherein the substrate comprises a natural clay, a synthetic clay, a natural zeolite, a synthetic zeolite, a polymer resin, lignite, kaolinite, serpentine, illite, chlorite, smectite, montmorillonite, saponite, sepiolite, nontronite, beidellite, hectorite, fuller's earth, attapulgite, bentonite, analcime, chabazite, heulandite, natrolite, phillipsite, stilbite, diethyl aminoethyl, quaternary aminoethyl, or combinations thereof, wherein the organic ion comprises quaternary amines, imidazolium salts, phosphonium salts, tetra alkyl ammonium, bis-(hydrogenated tallow)-dimethyl-ammonium chloride, bis-(hydrogenated tallow)-benzyl-methyl-ammonium chloride, 4,5-dihydro-1-methyl-2-nortallow-alkyl-1-(2-tallow-amidoethyl)-imidazolium methyl sulfate, 1-ethyl-4,5-dihydro-3-(2-hydroxyethyl)-2-(8-heptadecenyl)-imidazolium ethyl sulfate, or combinations thereof, and wherein the metal-binding agent comprises mercaptan, carboxylic acid, chelating agents, amines, esters, carboxylic acids, alcohols, ethers, aldehydes, ketones, alkenes, alkynes, mercaptans, thiols, tert-dodecanethiol, nonanethiol, octanethiol, n-stearic acid, iso-stearic acid, palmitic acid, or combinations thereof.

A method for removing a metal from a metal-containing solution comprising: contacting the metal-containing solution with a metal-removing composition comprising a substrate, an organic ion ionically bound to the substrate, and a metal binding agent hydrophobically associated with the organic ion, wherein the metal-binding agent comprises a mercaptan, a carboxylic acid, a chelating agent, or combinations thereof, wherein the mercaptan comprises tert-dodecanethiol, nonanethiol, octanethiol, or combinations thereof, and wherein the organic ion comprises imidazolium salts, phosphonium salts, bis-(hydrogenated tallow)-dimethyl-ammonium chloride, bis-(hydrogenated tallow)-benzyl-methyl-ammonium chloride, or combinations thereof, wherein at least a portion of the metal is bound to the metal binding agent during the step of contacting;separating the contacted metal-removing composition from the contacted metal-containing solution to recover a solution having a lowered metal concentration when compared to the metal-containing solution; andregenerating the contacted metal-removing composition by contacting the metal-removing composition with a hydrophobic solvent to remove the metal-binding agent having metal bound thereto from the organic ion ionically bound to the substrate followed by contacting the organic ion ionically bound to the substrate with additional metal-binding agent that is substantially free of any metal. 2. The method of claim 1 wherein the metal-containing solution comprises a metal, a heavy metal, or combinations thereof. 3. The method of claim 2 wherein the metal or heavy metal comprises lead, iron, arsenic, mercury, copper, manganese, chromium, barium, cadmium, selenium, antimony, beryllium, nickel, thallium, or combinations thereof. 4. The method of claim 2 wherein the metal and/or heavy metal is present in the metal-containing solution in an amount of equal to or less than about 10000 ppm. 5. The method of claim 1 wherein the substrate comprises a natural clay, a synthetic clay, a natural zeolite, a synthetic zeolite, a polymer resin, lignite, or combinations thereof. 6. The method of claim 5 wherein the clay comprises kaolinite, serpentine, illite, chlorite, smectite or combinations thereof. 7. The method of claim 6 wherein the smectite comprises montmorillonite, saponite, sepiolite, nontronite, beidellite, hectorite, fuller's earth, attapulgite, or combinations thereof. 8. The method of claim 5 wherein the zeolite comprises analcime, chabazite, heulandite, natrolite, phillipsite, stilbite, or combinations thereof. 9. The method of claim 5 wherein the polymer resin comprises diethyl aminoethyl, quaternary aminoethyl, or combinations thereof. 10. The method of claim 1 wherein the substrate is present in an amount of from about 30% to about 90% by weight of the metal-removing composition. 11. The method of claim 1 wherein the imidazolium salts comprise 4,5-dihydro-1-methyl-2-nortallow-alkyl-1-(2-tallow-amidoethyl)-imidazolium methyl sulfate, 1-ethyl-4,5-dihydro-3-(2-hydroxyethyl)-2-(8-heptadecenyl)-imidazolium ethyl sulfate, or combinations thereof. 12. The method of claim 1 wherein the organic ion is present in an amount of from about 10% to about 70% by weight of the removing composition. 13. The method of claim 1 wherein the chelating agent comprises amines, esters, carboxylic acids, alcohols, ethers, aldehydes, ketones, alkenes, alkynes, mercaptans, thiols, or combinations thereof. 14. The method of claim 1 wherein the carboxylic acid comprises n-stearic acid, iso-stearic acid, palmitic acid, or combinations thereof. 15. The method of claim 1 wherein the metal-binding agent comprises an alkyl group comprising from about 2 to about 30 carbons. 16. The method of claim 1 wherein the metal-binding agent is present in an amount of equal to or less than about 30% by weight of the removing composition. 17. The method of claim 1 wherein the metal-removing composition reduces the amount of metal in the metal-containing solution by equal to or greater than about 75%. 18. The method of claim 1 wherein the metal-containing solution comprises a metal, a heavy metal, or combinations thereof; wherein the substrate comprises a natural clay, a synthetic clay, a natural zeolite, a synthetic zeolite, a polymer resin, lignite, or combinations thereof; andwherein the organic ion comprises imidazolium salts, phosphonium salts, or combinations thereof. 19. The method of claim 1 wherein the metal-containing solution comprises lead, iron, arsenic, mercury, copper, manganese, chromium, barium, cadmium, selenium, antimony, beryllium, nickel, thallium, or combinations thereof; wherein the substrate comprises kaolinite, serpentine, illite, chlorite, smectite or combinations thereof;wherein the organic ion comprises bis-(hydrogenated tallow)-dimethyl-ammonium chloride, bis-(hydrogenated tallow)-benzyl-methyl-ammonium chloride, or combinations thereof; andwherein the metal-binding agent comprises carboxylic acids, mercaptans, thiols, or combinations thereof. 20. The method of claim 1 wherein the metal-containing solution comprises lead, iron, arsenic, mercury, copper, manganese, chromium, barium, cadmium, selenium, antimony, beryllium, nickel, thallium, or combinations thereof; wherein the substrate comprises montmorillonite, saponite, sepiolite, nontronite, beidellite, hectorite, fuller's earth, attapulgite, analcime, chabazite, heulandite, natrolite, phillipsite, stilbite, or combinations thereof;wherein the organic ion comprises 4,5-dihydro-1-methyl-2-nortallow-alkyl-1-(2-tallow-amidoethyl)-imidazolium methyl sulfate, 1-ethyl-4,5-dihydro-3-(2-hydroxyethyl)-2-(8-heptadecenyl)-imidazolium ethyl sulfate, or combinations thereof; andwherein the metal-binding agent comprises tert-dodecanethiol, nonanethiol, octanethiol, n-stearic acid, iso-stearic acid, palmitic acid, or combinations thereof. 21. The method of claim 1 wherein the metal and/or heavy metal is present in the metal-containing solution in an amount of equal to or less than about 10000 ppm; wherein the substrate is present in an amount of from about 30% to about 90% by weight of the metal-removing composition;wherein the organic ion is present in an amount of from about 10% to about 70% by weight of the removing composition; andwherein the metal-binding agent is present in an amount of equal to or less than about 30% by weight of the removing composition. 22. The method of claim 1 wherein the metal-containing solution and metal-removing composition are contacted at a ratio of metal-containing solution to metal-removing composition of about 50:50. 23. The method of claim 1 further comprising contacting the recovered solution with a second metal-removing composition and recovering a second solution having a lowered metal concentration when compared to the metal-containing solution. 24. The method of claim 1 wherein the substrate comprises bentonite and the organic ion comprises bis-(hydrogenated tallow)-dimethyl-ammonium chloride, bis-(hydrogenated tallow)-benzyl-methyl-ammonium chloride, or combinations thereof. 25. The method of claim 1 wherein the contacting is for a time period of from about 5 minutes to about 20 minutes.
