Methods and systems for providing data communication in medical systems are disclosed.
1. An analyte monitoring device, comprising: a data storage unit; andone or more processors operatively coupled to the data storage unit and configured to retrieve instructions stored in the data storage unit to establish a communication path with a remote device when the remote device is placed wit
1. An analyte monitoring device, comprising: a data storage unit; andone or more processors operatively coupled to the data storage unit and configured to retrieve instructions stored in the data storage unit to establish a communication path with a remote device when the remote device is placed within a predetermined distance from the analyte monitoring device, to determine when a transcutaneously positioned analyte sensor is initialized, to increment a count based on the determination, and to associate the incremented count with the transcutaneously positioned analyte sensor; anda communication module operatively coupled to the one or more processors and configured to transmit the incremented count to the remote device when the remote device is placed within the predetermined distance, wherein the identity of a new transcutaneously positioned analyte sensor is based on the incremented count. 2. The device of claim 1 wherein the data storage unit includes a nonvolatile memory unit. 3. The device of claim 1 wherein the predetermined distance is approximately one foot or less. 4. A control device for communicating with an analyte monitoring unit, comprising: a data communication section configured to establish a communication range with the analyte monitoring unit when the control device is placed within a predetermined distance from the analyte monitoring unit, the data communication section further configured to receive data, including a sensor information associated with a transcutaneously positioned analyte sensor, when the control device is placed within the established communication range; anda processing unit coupled to the data communication section to process the received data, the processing unit further configured to compare the sensor information in the received data with a stored sensor information to verify the identity of the transcutaneously positioned analyte sensor, and when it is determined that the received sensor information is different than the stored sensor information, the processing unit is configured to determine the identity of the transcutaneously positioned analyte sensor, and to generate one or more signals based at least in part on processing the received data. 5. The device of claim 4 wherein the generated one or more signals include a command to disable the data communication section. 6. The device of claim 4 wherein the generated one or more signals is output to a user. 7. The device of claim 6 including a display unit to display the generated one or more signals. 8. The device of claim 6 wherein the one or more signals output includes one or more of a visual indicator, an audible indicator or a vibratory indicator. 9. The device of claim 6 wherein the one or more signals output includes a directional arrow indicator. 10. The device of claim 6 wherein the one or more signals output includes monitored analyte level information and a monitored analyte level trend indicator. 11. A method, comprising: establishing data communication between an analyte monitoring device and a remote device when the remote device is positioned within a predetermined distance from the analyte monitoring device;communicating a count associated with a transcutaneously positioned analyte sensor to the remote device, wherein the identity of the transcutaneously positioned analyte sensor is verified based at least in part on the count;detecting replacement of the transcutaneously positioned analyte sensor;updating the count based on the detected replacement and communicating data from the analyte sensor to the remote device; andgenerating one or more signals based on the data from the analyte sensor. 12. The method of claim 11 including: detecting a further replacement of the transcutaneously positioned analyte sensor; andfurther updating the count associated with the detected further replacement of the transcutaneously positioned analyte sensor. 13. The method of claim 11 wherein the generated one or more signals includes a command to disable data communication. 14. The method of claim 11 including providing the generated one or more signals to a user. 15. The method of claim 14 including outputting the generated one or more signals. 16. The method of claim 11 including storing the received count information when it is determined that the received count information is different than the stored count information. 17. The method of claim 11 wherein detecting replacement of the transcutaneously positioned analyte sensor includes a new transcutaneously positioned analyte sensor detection. 18. The method of claim 11 wherein the generated one or more signals includes prompting a user to replace the transcutaneously positioned analyte sensor.
