A wireless input device for playing an interactive motion-sensitive game using a wireless-compatible game console in which a virtual play environment is represented through one or more computer-animated visual, aural or tactile effects is provided wherein game play is conducted by moving, shaking, twisting, waving or pointing the input device in a particular manner. The input device can include motion-sensitive circuitry and/or command circuitry for generating control signals and/or an effects generator and associated control circuitry to enable the input device to selectively generate at least one visual, aural or tactile effect comprising sound, lighting or vibration. The input device can include a wireless transceiver for providing two-way wireless communication with the wireless-compatible game console. An optional display screen displays short text messages received through wireless communications with the wireless-compatible game console.

A portable gaming device for amusing or entertaining one or more game participants playing a game in which a computer-generated play environment is represented through one or more computer-animated visual, aural or tactile effects, said portable gaming device comprising: a body comprising an internal cavity sized and configured to receive one or more batteries and associated circuitry;non-volatile memory configured to store at least one unique identifier for uniquely identifying said portable gaming device;a first radio frequency (RF) transceiver configured and adapted to provide medium-range two-way wireless communication with a first wireless-compatible device; anda second RF transceiver configured and adapted to provide short-range two-way wireless communication with a second wireless-compatible device, wherein said second wireless-compatible device comprises a radio frequency identification RFID tag and wherein said second RF transceiver comprises an RFID reader device configured and adapted to exchange one or more wireless communications with said RFID tag when said RFID reader device and said RFID tag are within communication range of one another and wherein said short-range two-way communication is facilitated at least in part through inductive coupling between said second RF transceiver and said second wireless-compatible device. 2. The portable gaming device of claim 1, wherein said first wireless-compatible device comprises a wireless-compatible gaming platform configured and adapted to produce a computer-generated play environment and wherein said portable gaming device is configured to operate with said wireless-compatible gaming platform as a wireless input controller for enabling a game participant to selectively activate or control said one or more computer-animated visual, aural or tactile effects in accordance with a game. 3. The portable gaming device of claim 2, wherein said wireless-compatible gaming platform comprises a wireless-compatible video game console, home game console, portable game unit, personal computer, or live-action play facility. 4. The portable gaming device of claim 1, wherein said RFID reader device is further configured and adapted to wirelessly power said RFID tag through inductive coupling. 5. The portable gaming device of claim 4, wherein said second wireless-compatible device comprises a physical game card, token or trinket depicting or representing a person, character or object relevant to a game and wherein said physical game card, token or trinket includes an associated RFID tag configured to electronically identify or describe said person, character or object when said associated RFID tag is wirelessly powered and read by said RFID reader device. 6. The portable gaming device of claim 1, wherein said first RF transceiver is configured to wirelessly communicate in a range of greater than 10 feet. 7. The portable gaming device of claim 6, wherein said second RF transceiver is configured to wirelessly communicate in a range of less than 60 cm and wherein communication is facilitated through inductive coupling between said second RF transceiver and said second wireless-compatible device. 8. The portable gaming device of claim 1, further comprising a display screen configured to display game-relevant information. 9. The portable gaming device of claim 1, further comprising a game effects generator configured to produce at least one sound, vibration or lighting effect in accordance with a game. 10. The portable gaming device of claim 1, wherein said portable gaming device comprises a portable handheld game unit. 11. The portable gaming device of claim 1, further comprising motion- or position-sensitive circuitry configured and adapted to enable said portable gaming device to be operated at least in part by moving the entire body of said portable gaming device to activate or control one or more computer-animated visual, aural or tactile effects. 12. The portable gaming device of claim 1, further comprising a global positioning system (GPS) device configured and adapted to determine a global location of said portable wireless gaming device. 13. The portable gaming device of claim 1, in combination with a wireless-compatible gaming platform comprising a home game console configured and adapted to produce said one or more computer-animated visual, aural or tactile effects in accordance with a game. 14. The combination of claim 13, in further combination with game software adapted to be executed by said home game console to carry out said game, said game software including program instructions for causing said home game console to: i) conduct said game in which said virtual play environment is visually and aurally represented through one or more computer animations, ii) track a game progress or performance of one or more game participants playing said game, and iii) adjust a play experience for said one or more game participants based at least in part on said tracked game progress or performance. 15. The portable gaming device of claim 1, in combination with an image capture system configured to capture one or more digital images of a game participant playing said game. 16. A game for amusing or entertaining one or more game participants wherein at least a first portion of said game is virtually represented through one or more computer-animated visual, aural or tactile effects and wherein at least a second portion of said game is physically represented through one or more radio frequency identification (RFID)-tagged items, said game comprising: a first radio frequency (RF) transceiver configured and adapted to provide medium-range two-way wireless communication with a first wireless-compatible device comprising a wireless-compatible video game console, home game console, handheld game unit, or personal computer, said first RF transceiver configured to provide a communication range of greater than 10 feet;a second RF transceiver configured and adapted to provide short-range two-way wireless communication with a second wireless-compatible device comprising at least one or more RFID-tagged items, said second RF transceiver configured to provide a wireless communication range of less than 60 cm;at least one RFID-tagged collectible gaming item comprising a physical game card, token or trinket depicting or representing a person, character or object relevant to said game;a wireless power source configured and adapted to generate an electromagnetic field to wirelessly power said at least one RFID-tagged collectible gaming item by inductive coupling when said at least one RFID-tagged collectible gaming item is within said wireless communication range of said second RF transceiver; andgame software adapted to be executed by said first wireless-compatible device to conduct said game, said game software including program instructions for causing said first wireless-compatible device to: i) conduct an interactive game in which a virtual play environment is visually and aurally represented through one or more computer animations, ii) track a game progress or performance of one or more game participants playing said interactive game, and iii) adjust a play experience for said one or more game participants based at least in part on said tracked game progress or performance. 17. The game of claim 16, further comprising a handheld game controller sized and configured to be held in the air and operated by a game participant at least in part by moving the entire said body of said game controller in one or more motions to activate or control said one or more computer-animated visual, aural or tactile effects in accordance with said game. 18. The game of claim 17, wherein said game controller further comprises motion- or position-sensitive circuitry configured and adapted to sense and distinguish said one or more motions. 19. The game of claim 17, wherein said first wireless-compatible device is configured and adapted to produce a computer-generated play environment representing a first portion of said game through one or more computer-animated visual, aural or tactile effects and wherein said game controller is configured to operate with said first wireless-compatible device as an input controller for enabling a game participant to selectively activate or control said one or more computer-animated visual, aural or tactile effects in accordance with said game. 20. The game of claim 19, wherein said game controller further comprises a display screen and a game effects generator configured to produce at least one sound, vibration or lighting effect in accordance with said game. 21. The game of claim 16, wherein said first wireless-compatible device comprises a portable handheld game unit configured and adapted to produce a computer-generated play environment representing a first portion of said game and wherein said game participant plays said game at least in part by selectively placing said one or more RFID-tagged items within said communication range of said second RF transceiver to wirelessly power said associated RFID tag and thereby cause selected information stored on said associated RFID tag to be automatically and wirelessly communicated to said second RF transceiver, and wherein said game software is further configured and adapted to cause said portable handheld game unit to use said selected information to produce said one or more computer-animated visual, aural or tactile effects with a particular appearance, characteristic or trait of said corresponding depicted or represented person, character or object. 22. The game of claim 21, wherein said at least one RFID-tagged collectible gaming item comprises a passive RFID tag configured to store a unique identifier for wirelessly and electronically identifying said RFID-tagged collectible gaming item and/or said person, character or object depicted or represented by said RFID-tagged collectible gaming item. 23. The game of claim 22, wherein said passive RFID tag further comprises non-volatile memory configured and adapted to store game-relevant information associated with said person, character or object, said game-relevant information comprising character attributes, characteristics, appearance or traits selected or developed by a game participant while playing said game. 24. The game of claim 16, wherein each of said one or more RFID-tagged items includes an associated passive RFID tag configured to store a unique identifier for electronically identifying said RFID-tagged item and/or said person, character or object depicted or represented by said RFID-tagged item, and wherein said second RF transceiver is further configured and adapted to automatically exchange one or more wireless communications with said associated passive RFID tag when said second RF transceiver and said associated passive RFID tag are within said communication range of one another and wherein at least one of said exchanged wireless communications includes communication of said stored unique identifier. 25. The game of claim 24, wherein at least one of said one or more RFID-tagged items comprises a physical game card, token or trinket depicting or representing said person, character or object relevant to said game and wherein said associated passive RFID tag further comprises non-volatile programmable memory configured and adapted to store game-relevant information associated with said person, character or object, said game-relevant information comprising character attributes, characteristics, appearance or traits selected or developed by a game participant while playing said game. 26. The game of claim 16, wherein said second RF transceiver is configured to wirelessly communicate in a range of at least 1 cm and wherein said communication is conducted at least in part through inductive coupling between said second RF transceiver and said second wireless-compatible device. 27. The game of claim 16, in combination with a wireless-compatible gaming platform comprising a home game console or handheld game unit configured and adapted to produce said one or more computer-animated visual, aural or tactile effects in accordance with said game. 28. A gaming system for amusing or entertaining one or more game participants playing a game wherein at least a portion of said game is virtually represented through one or more computer-animated visual, aural or tactile effects and wherein at least a portion of said game is physically represented through one or more wireless-compatible gaming items, said gaming system comprising: a portable gaming device comprising (i) a first radio frequency (RF) transceiver configured and adapted to provide medium-range two-way wireless communication with a wireless-compatible gaming platform comprising a video game console, home game console, handheld game unit, or personal computer, (ii) a second RF transceiver configured and adapted to provide short-range two-way wireless communication with one or more wireless-compatible gaming items, and (iii) a wireless power source configured and adapted to generate field energy to wirelessly power said one or more wireless-compatible gaming items by inductive coupling;one or more wireless-compatible gaming items comprising collectible physical items depicting or representing persons, characters or objects relevant to a game, each said one or more wireless-compatible gaming items comprising an associated radio frequency transponder device comprising (i) a unique identifier stored therein for electronically identifying each said one or more wireless-compatible gaming items within said game, and (ii) non-volatile programmable memory configured and adapted to store game-relevant information associated with said person, character or object, said game-relevant information comprising character attributes, characteristics, appearance or traits selected or developed by a game participant while playing said game, and wherein each said transponder device is further configured and adapted to automatically exchange one or more wireless communications with said second transceiver when said wireless-compatible gaming item is wirelessly powered by said wireless power source; andgame software adapted to be executed by said wireless-compatible gaming platform to direct an interactive game, said game software including program instructions for causing said wireless-compatible gaming platform to: i) conduct an interactive game in which a virtual play environment is visually and aurally represented through one or more computer animations, ii) track a game progress or performance of one or more game participants playing said interactive game, and iii) adjust a play experience for said one or more game participants based at least in part on said wireless communication of said stored game-relevant information. 29. The gaming system of claim 28, wherein said one or more wireless-compatible gaming items comprise one or more physical game cards, tokens or trinkets depicting or representing persons, characters or objects relevant to said game, and wherein each of said one or more physical game cards, tokens or trinkets is associated with a passive RFID tag having stored therein selected information configured to wirelessly and electronically identify or describe said corresponding person, character or object. 30. The gaming system of claim 28, wherein said second RF transceiver and said wireless power source are configured as a single wireless reader/writer device configured to wirelessly power said one or more wireless-compatible gaming items and to read and write said information stored therein. 31. The gaming system of claim 28, wherein said portable gaming device comprises a portable handheld game controller. 32. The gaming system of claim 31, wherein said handheld game controller is configured and adapted to be held and moved feely in the air and to provide a wireless control signal to said wireless-compatible gaming platform based at least in part on one or more sensed motions of said game controller to thereby activate or control said one or more computer-animated visual, aural or tactile effects. 33. The gaming system of claim 31, wherein said handheld game controller comprises a wireless handheld wand controller. 34. The gaming system of claim 31, wherein said game controller further comprises a display screen configured and adapted to display game-relevant information. 35. The gaming system of claim 31, wherein said game controller further comprises a game effects generator configured to produce at least one sound, vibration or lighting effect in accordance with said game. 36. The gaming system of claim 28, wherein said first RF transceiver is configured to wirelessly communicate in a range of greater than 10 feet and wherein said second RF transceiver is configured to wirelessly communicate in a range of less than 60 cm. 37. The gaming system of claim 28, further comprising an image capture system configured to capture one or more digital images of a game participant playing said game. 38. A portable device for playing a game in which a computer-generated play environment is represented through one or more computer-animated visual, aural or tactile effects, said portable device comprising: a body comprising an internal cavity sized and configured to receive one or more batteries and associated circuitry;a display screen configured to display game-relevant information;a game effects generator configured to produce at least one sound, vibration or lighting effect in accordance with a game;non-volatile memory configured to store at least one unique identifier for uniquely identifying said portable device;a first radio frequency (RF) transceiver configured and adapted to provide medium-range two-way wireless communication with a first wireless-compatible device; anda second RF transceiver configured and adapted to provide short-range two-way wireless communication with a second wireless-compatible device, wherein said second wireless-compatible device comprises a radio frequency transponder device and wherein said second RF transceiver comprises a wireless reader device configured and adapted to wirelessly power and exchange one or more wireless communications with said transponder device when said portable device and said transponder device are within communication range of one another and wherein said short-range two-way communication is facilitated at least in part through inductive coupling between said second RF transceiver and said second wireless-compatible device. 39. The portable device of claim 38, wherein said first wireless-compatible device comprises a wireless-compatible gaming platform configured and adapted to produce a computer-generated play environment and wherein said portable device is configured to operate with said wireless-compatible gaming platform as a wireless input controller for enabling a game participant to selectively activate or control said one or more computer-animated visual, aural or tactile effects in accordance with a game. 40. The portable device of claim 39, wherein said wireless-compatible gaming platform comprises a wireless-compatible video game console, home game console, portable game unit, personal computer, or live-action play facility. 41. The portable device of claim 38, wherein said wireless reader device is further configured and adapted to wirelessly power said transponder device through inductive coupling. 42. The portable device of claim 41, wherein said second wireless-compatible device comprises a physical game card, token or trinket depicting or representing a person, character or object relevant to a game and wherein said physical game card, token or trinket comprises an associated transponder device comprising an RFID tag configured to electronically identify or describe said person, character or object when said associated RFID tag is wirelessly powered and read by said wireless reader device. 43. The portable device of claim 38, wherein said first RF transceiver is configured to wirelessly communicate in a range of greater than 10 feet. 44. The portable device of claim 38, wherein said second RF transceiver is configured to wirelessly communicate in a range of less than 60 cm and wherein communication is facilitated through inductive coupling between said second RF transceiver and said second wireless-compatible device. 45. The portable device of claim 38, wherein said portable device comprises a portable handheld game unit. 46. The portable device of claim 38, further comprising motion- or position-sensitive circuitry configured and adapted to enable said portable device to be operated at least in part by moving the entire body of said portable device to activate or control one or more computer-animated visual, aural or tactile effects. 47.
