The invention provides systems and methods for cooling and lubrication of high power density electric machines with an enhanced fluid injection system. A plurality of fluid flow passages may be provided within the electric machine. A method for fluid distribution for cooling and lubrication of the electric machine may comprise providing a fluid distribution manifold with at least one inlet and a plurality of distribution openings leading to a plurality of fluid flow passages within the machine. The fluid within the electric machine may be used to cool and/or lubricate internal components of the electric machine.

An electric machine comprising: a rotor fixed to a rotatable shaft and supported by means of one or more bearings;a stator stationary in relation to the rotatable rotor and shaft with a gap between the rotor and the stator;a housing surrounding all or part of the machine; anda fluid distribution manifold with at least one inlet and a plurality of distribution openings leading to a plurality of fluid flow passages within the machine that are in fluid communication with the rotor, stator, or housing, wherein the plurality of fluid flow passages includes one or more stator fluid flow pathways between the stator and housing directing fluid to flow circumferentially around the perimeter of the stator. 2. The electric machine of claim 1 wherein the plurality of fluid flow passages within the machine are in fluid communication with at least one outlet. 3. The electric machine of claim 1 wherein the plurality of fluid flow passages within the machine comprise one or more rotor fluid flow pathways along the rotatable shaft toward the rotor and stator. 4. The electric machine of claim 1 wherein the plurality of fluid flow passages within the machine comprise one or more bearing fluid flow pathways contacting at least one bearing. 5. The electric machine of claim 1 wherein a fluid that is directed to flow through the plurality of fluid flow passages within the machine is used to cool or lubricate the rotor, the stator, or the bearings. 6. The electric machine of claim 1 wherein all or part of the housing is fluid-sealed, such that fluid is prevented from entering or exiting the machine except at designated inlet and outlet ports. 7. A method for fluid distribution for cooling and lubrication of an electric machine comprising: providing a rotor fixed to a rotatable shaft;providing a stator stationary in relation to the rotatable rotor and shaft with a gap between the rotor and the stator;providing a housing surrounding all or part of the machine; andproviding a fluid distribution manifold with at least one inlet and a plurality of distribution openings leading to a plurality of fluid flow passages within the machine that are in fluid communication with the rotor, stator, or housing, wherein the plurality of fluid flow passages includes one or more stator fluid flow pathways between the stator and housing directing fluid to flow circumferentially around the perimeter of the stator. 8. The method of claim 7 wherein the plurality of fluid flow passages within the machine are in fluid communication with at least one outlet. 9. The method of claim 7 wherein the plurality of fluid flow passages within the machine comprise one or more rotor fluid flow pathways along the rotatable shaft toward the rotor and stator. 10. The method of claim 7 wherein the plurality of fluid flow passages within the machine comprise one or more bearing fluid flow pathways contacting at least one bearing. 11. The method of claim 7 wherein a fluid that is directed to flow through the plurality of fluid flow passages within the machine is used to cool or lubricate the rotor, the stator, or the bearings. 12. The method of claim 7 wherein all or part of the housing is fluid-sealed, such that fluid is prevented from entering or exiting the machine except at designated inlet and outlet ports. 13. The electric machine of claim 1 wherein the one or more stator fluid flow pathways leads from the fluid distribution manifold to an exhaust sump which is in fluid communication with at least one fluid outlet port. 14. The method of claim 7 wherein the one or more stator fluid flow pathways leads from the fluid distribution manifold to an exhaust sump which is in fluid communication with at least one fluid outlet port.
