A system for controlling for at least one string of a musical instrument, the system comprising: at least one transducer configured to sense a lateral vibration of the string and/or to apply an actuating force to the string; anda controller configured to determine an actuating signal for driving the at least one transducer to apply a longitudinal actuating force to the string at a termination point of the string, the longitudinal actuating force being operable to modulate a tension of the string that increases and/or damps the lateral vibration and/or selected harmonics thereof, wherein the longitudinal actuating force completes two cycles of vibration during every one cycle of lateral vibration of the string or harmonic component thereof. 2. The system of claim 1 wherein the longitudinal actuating force is proportional to a sum of multiplication products, each product being of a single harmonic component of the lateral string vibration velocity and lateral string displacement measured at substantially the same point along the string. 3. The system of claim 1 wherein the controller is responsive to a reference control signal input prescriptive of string motion, and further comprising a supervisor configured to facilitate player control of the string, the supervisor being configured to provide the reference control signal responsive to detected player techniques comprising selected characteristic features of vibratory motion of the string. 4. The system of claim 1 wherein the at least one transducer comprises at least one of a piezoelectric sensor, an electromagnetic sensor, an optical sensor, and an ultrasonic sensor responsive to ultrasonic vibrations reflected by the lateral musical vibration of the string, the ultrasonic vibrations being provided by an ultrasonic emitter. 5. The system of claim 1 wherein the at least one transducer comprises a longitudinal actuator, the longitudinal actuator comprising an electromagnetic actuator, a piezoelectric actuator, and/or a magnetostrictive actuator. 6. The system of claim 1 wherein the at least one transducer is a piezoelectric bending actuator. 7. The system of claim 1 wherein lateral vibration of the string is sensed by the at least one transducer comprising at least one ultrasonic sensor responsive to ultrasonic vibrations reflected by the string, the ultrasonic vibrations being provided by an ultrasonic emitter. 8. The system of claim 7 wherein the velocity of the lateral vibration of the string is sensed by the at least one transducer by measuring the Doppler shift of the reflected ultrasonic vibrations. 9. The system of claim 1 wherein the actuating force signal is proportional to a multiplication product of lateral string vibration velocity and lateral string displacement, velocity and displacement being measured at substantially the same point along the string. 10. The system of claim 9 wherein vibratory motion of the string undergoing a smooth changing of pitch comprises one of the preselected player techniques. 11. The system of claim 10 wherein the supervisor is configured to cause the controller to provide the actuating signal that modifies the vibratory motion of the string in accordance with a measurement of vibrato. 12. The system of claim 11 wherein the measurement is of the magnitude of pitch change due to vibrato and the modification to motion comprises exciting and sustaining string vibration according to the magnitude of vibrato. 13. The system of claim 10 wherein the supervisor is configured to cause the controller to provide the actuating signal that modifies the vibratory motion of the string in accordance with a measurement of pitch change due to glissando. 14. The system of claim 9 wherein the supervisor is configured to cause the controller to provide the actuating signal that modifies the tension of the string to correct an error in the frequency of string vibration resulting from the action of driving the string termination point transversely to control lateral string vibration. 15. The system of claim 9 wherein the supervisor is arranged to cause the controller to provide the actuating signal that modifies the tension of the string to adjust the pitch to conform to a selected pitch. 16. The system of claim 9 wherein amplitude of vibratory motion comprises one of the preselected player techniques, and a string undergoing motion having amplitude above a threshold causes the supervisor to cause the controller to provide an actuating signal to increase and modify the string's vibratory motion and a string undergoing vibratory motion having amplitude below a threshold causes the supervisor to cause the controller to provide an actuating signal to damp the string's vibratory motion. 17. The system of claim 9 wherein the supervisor is provided with one or more external data connections whereby programs in the supervisor can be changed or replaced and/or for general data communications and/or for an auxiliary user-interface. 18. A system for controlling for at least one string of a musical instrument, the system comprising: at least one transducer configured to sense a lateral vibration of the string and/or to apply an actuating force to the string; anda controller configured to determine an actuating signal for driving the at least one transducer to apply a longitudinal actuating force to the string at a termination point of the string, the longitudinal actuating force being operable to modulate a tension of the string that increases and/or damps the lateral vibration and/or selected harmonics thereof,wherein the at least one transducer further comprises a second transducer configured to generate, during a first portion of a time frame of a plurality of successive time frames, a sensing signal representative of string velocity and to apply, during a second portion of the time frame, an actuating force to the at least one string such that the actuating signal is a function of the sensing signal for selectively controlling the vibratory motion of the string over the plurality of successive time frames to increase and/or damp lateral string vibration and/or selected harmonics thereof, wherein the second transducer is a unitary sensing/actuating transducer. 19. A system for controlling for at least one string of a musical instrument, the system comprising: at least one transducer configured to sense a lateral vibration of the string and/or to apply an actuating force to the string; anda controller configured to determine an actuating signal for driving the at least one transducer to apply a longitudinal actuating force to the string at a termination point of the string, the longitudinal actuating force being operable to modulate a tension of the string that increases and/or damps the lateral vibration and/or selected harmonics thereof;wherein the controller is responsive to a reference control signal input prescriptive of string motion, and further comprising a supervisor configured to facilitate player control of the string, the supervisor being configured to provide the reference control signal responsive to detected player techniques comprising selected characteristic features of vibratory motion of the string;wherein the controller is configured to generate the actuating signal by separating selected harmonics of the string into individual signals, modifying an amplitude and/or polarity of the selected harmonics, and summing the modified amplitude and/or polarity of the selected harmonics to provide the actuation signal, wherein the actuating signal is generated based on a tension, T, as follows: T=g×p×p′where p is a displacement of a point on the string, p′ is velocity a derivative of displacement p, and g is a coefficient describing a control gain.
