The cooling system includes a heat sink comprising a base portion and a plurality of fins disposed on the base portion and extending vertically out therefrom, the plurality of fins spaced to define a channel between adjacent fins. The cooling system also includes at least one synthetic jet actuator attached to the heat sink, with each of the at least one synthetic jet actuators comprising a plurality of orifices therein and being configured to generate and project a series of fluid vortices out from the plurality of orifices and toward at least a portion of the channels of the heat sink.

A cooling system comprising: a heat sink comprising a base portion and a plurality of fins disposed on the base portion and extending vertically out therefrom, the fins being spaced to define a channel between each adjacent pair of fins in the plurality of fins; andat least one synthetic jet actuator attached to the heat sink, each of the at least one synthetic jet actuators comprising a plurality of orifices therein and being configured to generate and project a series of fluid vortices out from the plurality of orifices and toward a portion of the channels of the heat sink;wherein the plurality of fins comprises: a first set of fins positioned adjacent the plurality of orifices and so as to define channels that receive the fluid vortices projected out from the plurality of orifices, each fin in the first set of fins having a first three-dimensional shape, anda second set of fins not positioned adjacent the plurality of orifices to define channels that do not receive the fluid vortices projected out from the plurality of orifices, fin in the second set of fins having a second three-dimensional shape;wherein the second three-dimensional shape of each of the second set of fins is configured to promote the entraining of air into the heat sink in a radially inward direction and through the channels that do not receive the fluid vortices projected out from the plurality of orifices. 2. The cooling device of claim 1 wherein the plurality of fins is positioned to define a hollow central area in the heat sink. 3. The cooling device of claim 2 wherein each of the at least one synthetic jet actuators is positioned in the hollow central area of the heat sink and wherein the plurality of orifices are dispersed about an outer perimeter of the synthetic jet actuator to project the series of fluid vortices outwardly through at least a portion of the plurality of channels of the heat sink. 4. The cooling device of claim 1 wherein the at least one synthetic jet actuator comprises a plurality of synthetic jet actuators positioned in a stacked arrangement so as to be vertically offset. 5. The cooling device of claim 4 wherein the plurality of orifices in each of the plurality of synthetic jet actuators is angularly offset from the plurality of orifices in an adjacent synthetic jet actuator. 6. The cooling device of claim 1 wherein each fin in the first set of fins comprises a triangular-shaped fin configured to provide enhanced interaction with the radially outward flow of the fluid vortices and wherein each fin in the second set of fins comprises a plate-shaped fin configured to promote the entraining of air through the channels not receiving fluid vortices in a radially inward direction toward the heat sink, such that air is entrained in the radially inward direction through the channels not receiving fluid vortices while the fluid vortices are being projected out through the channels receiving the fluid vortices. 7. The cooling device of claim 1 wherein each of the at least one synthetic jet actuators comprises: a first plate;a second plate spaced apart from the first plate and arranged parallelly thereto;a wall structure coupled to and positioned between the first and second plates to form a chamber and including the plurality of orifices therein; andan actuator element coupled to at least one of the first and second plates to selectively cause deflection thereof, thereby changing a volume within the chamber so that the series of fluid vortices are generated and projected out from the plurality of orifices of the wall structure. 8. A cooling system comprising: a heat sink comprising a base portion and a plurality of fins disposed on the base portion and extending vertically out therefrom to define a plurality of channels, wherein the plurality of fins are positioned on the base portion to surround a central channel; anda synthetic jet actuator integrally attached to the heat sink and positioned in the central channel, the synthetic jet actuator comprising: a chamber having walls enclosing a volume;a plurality of orifices formed in the walls; andan actuator element coupled to at least one of the walls to selectively cause deflection thereof, thereby changing a volume within the chamber so that a series of fluid vortices are generated and projected out from the plurality of orifices and toward a portion of the plurality of channels of the heat sink;wherein the plurality of fins comprises: a first set of fins positioned adjacent the plurality of orifices and so as to define channels that receive the fluid vortices projected out from the plurality of orifices, wherein each of the first set of fins has a first three-dimensional shape configured to provide enhanced interaction with the radially outward flow of the fluid vortices; anda second set of fins not positioned adjacent the plurality of orifices to define channels that do not receive the fluid vortices projected out from the plurality of orifices, wherein each of the second set of fins has a second three-dimensional shape, different from the first three-dimensional shape, configured to promote the entraining of fluid through the channels not receiving fluid vortices in a radially inward direction and into the central channel of the heat sink;wherein fluid is entrained in the radially inward direction through the channels not receiving fluid vortices while the fluid vortices are being projected out through the channels receiving the fluid vortices. 9. The cooling system of claim 8 wherein the first three-dimensional shape and the second three-dimensional shape is selected from a group comprising a pin shape, a plate shape, and a triangular shape. 10. The cooling system of claim 8 wherein the plurality of orifices formed in the walls is dispersed about an outer perimeter of the synthetic jet actuator. 11. The cooling system of claim 10 further comprising an additional synthetic jet actuator positioned in the central channel and offset from the synthetic jet actuator to form a stacked synthetic jet actuator arrangement. 12. The cooling system of claim 11 wherein a plurality of orifices in the additional synthetic jet actuator are angularly offset from the plurality of orifices in the synthetic jet actuator. 13. A cooling system comprising: a heat sink comprising a base portion and a plurality of fins disposed on the base portion and extending vertically out therefrom to define a plurality of channels, wherein the plurality of fins are positioned on the base portion to surround a central channel; anda synthetic jet actuator integrally attached to the heat sink and positioned in the central channel, the synthetic jet actuator comprising: a chamber having walls enclosing a volume;a plurality of orifices formed in the walls; andan actuator element coupled to at least one of the walls to selectively cause deflection thereof, thereby changing a volume within the chamber so that a series of fluid vortices are generated and projected out from the plurality of orifices and toward a portion of the plurality of channels of the heat sink;wherein the plurality of fins comprises: a first set of fins positioned adjacent the plurality of orifices and so as to define channels that receive the fluid vortices projected out from the plurality of orifices, wherein each of the first set of fins comprises a triangular-shaped fin configured to provide enhanced interaction with the radially outward flow of the fluid vortices; anda second set of fins not positioned adjacent the plurality of orifices to define channels that do not receive the fluid vortices projected out from the plurality of orifices, wherein each of the second set of fins comprises a plate-shaped fin configured to promote the entraining of fluid through the channels not receiving fluid vortices in a radially inward direction and into the central channel of the heat sink;wherein fluid is entrained in the radially inward direction through the channels not receiving fluid vortices while the fluid vortices are being projected out through the channels receiving the fluid vortices.
