An air conditioning system for use in an over-the-road or off road vehicle is provided that provides a method of operation during both engine on and engine off conditions. The method operates the air conditioning system at one capacity when the engine is running, and at a second capacity when the engine is not running. The selection of these capacities is based on the power capacity of the source of electric power from which the air conditioning system is operated. When a storage battery is used to power the air conditioning system during engine off conditions, the second capacity is lower than the capacity at which the system is operated when the engine is running.

1. An air conditioning system for use in a vehicle having an engine while the engine is either operating or not operating, comprising: a variable-speed compressor;a variable-speed motor operably coupled to the variable-speed compressor;an intelligent power generation management controller operably coupled to the motor, the controller receiving electric power from at least one source of electric power; andwherein the controller controls a speed of the compressor via the motor based on a power capacity of the at least one source of electric power. 2. The system of claim 1, wherein the source of electric power is a battery, and wherein the controller modulates the speed of the compressor to provide enhanced run time based on battery capacity and a user selected temperature setting. 3. The system of claim 2, wherein the controller monitors a voltage of the battery, and wherein the controller disables operation of the compressor when the voltage drops below a predetermined set point of approximately 11.5 volts. 4. The system of claim 2, wherein the controller monitors a voltage of the battery, and wherein the controller disables operation of the compressor when the voltage drops below a predetermined set point determined by at least one of a starting power requirement of the vehicle's engine, and life of the battery. 5. The system of claim 1, further comprising a circulation fan and a condenser; and wherein the controller is operatively coupled to the circulation fan to control airflow across the condenser based on a user selected operating mode. 6. The system of claim 1, wherein the source of electric power is shore power, and wherein the controller modulates the compressor based on performance requirements. 7. The system of claim 1, wherein the source of electric power is an auxiliary power unit, and wherein the controller modulates the compressor based on performance requirements. 8. The system of claim 1, wherein the controller receives electric power from an engine driven electric power system, and wherein the controller modulates the compressor based on performance requirements. 9. The system of claim 1, wherein the controller is adapted to receive electric power from at least one source of electric power operable when the engine of the vehicle is not operating and from at least one source of electric power operable when the engine is operating, and wherein the controller dynamically utilizes electric power from one of the sources of electric power based on priority logic of available sources of electric power. 10. The system of claim 9, wherein the priority logic selects the at least one source electric power system operable when the engine is operating over the at least one source of electric power operable when the engine of the vehicle is not operating based on availability of the sources. 11. The system of claim 1, further comprising a heater, and wherein the controller disables the compressor and operates the heater to provide heating to the interior compartment of the vehicle. 12. The system of claim 1, further comprising a heater operatively coupled to the controller, and wherein the controller disables the compressor and operates the heater to provide heating to an interior compartment of the vehicle. 13. The system of claim 12, wherein the heater comprises a coolant heater. 14. The system of claim 12, wherein the heater comprises a fuel fired type air heater. 15. The system of claim 12, wherein the controller operates the heater based on the power capacity of the source of electric power to prolong operation of the system during an engine off condition when heating of the interior compartment of the vehicle is required. 16. The system of claim 1, further comprising at least one of a resistance type air heater and a fuel fired type air heater positioned in thermal communication with an interior compartment of the vehicle, and wherein the controller disables operation of the compressor. 17. A no-idle air conditioning system for use in a vehicle having an engine while the engine is not operating, comprising: an electrically driven, variable-speed compressor;at least one source of electric power operable when the engine is not operating to energize the compressor;an intelligent power generation management controller operably coupled to the compressor and the at least one source of electric power operable when the engine is not operating; andwherein the controller operates to vary a speed of the compressor based on a power capacity of the at least one source of electric power. 18. The no-idle air conditioning system of claim 17, wherein the at least one source of electric power operable when the engine is not operating is at least one battery. 19. The no-idle air conditioning system of claim 18, further comprising an input for external shore power, and wherein the controller utilizes electric power from the external shore power to control the speed of the compressor when external shore power is connected to the input. 20. The no-idle air conditioning system of claim 17, further comprising a heater operatively coupled to the controller, and wherein the controller disables the compressor and operates the heater when the engine is not operating to provide heating to an interior compartment of the vehicle.
