A method for removing sulfide from an aqueous alkali solution in which hydrogen peroxide is introduced into a sulfide-containing aqueous alkali solution associated with an alkali mineral recovery operation. The method is particularly useful for the processing of sulfide-containing aqueous alkali solutions containing NaHCO3 and Na2CO3, where bicarbonate in the sulfide-depleted alkali solution is decomposed to form Na2CO3, with concurrent evolution of gaseous carbon dioxide byproduct but without formation of gaseous H2S as a pollutant, and where Na2CO3 values are subsequently recovered from the sulfide-depleted carbonate-rich alkali solution via a crystallization operation.

1. A method for processing an aqueous alkali solution contaminated with sulfide comprising introducing hydrogen peroxide into a sulfide-containing aqueous alkali solution containing NaHCO3 and Na2CO3 to oxidize the soluble sulfide to a soluble reaction product and form a sulfide-depleted alkali solution;decomposing NaHCO3 in the sulfide-depleted alkali solution to form Na2CO3, with concurrent evolution of gaseous carbon dioxide, yielding a sulfide-depleted Na2CO3-enriched alkali solution; andrecovering Na2CO3 values from the sulfide-depleted Na2CO3-enriched alkali solution via a crystallization operation. 2. The method of claim 1 wherein the sulfide-containing aqueous alkali solution is obtained from a source selected from the group consisting of trona solution mining liquor, nahcolite solution mining liquor, trona mechanical mining waste water, surface holding ponds and natural brine lakes. 3. The method of claim 1 wherein the introduced hydrogen peroxide is aqueous hydrogen peroxide containing about 1 wt % H2O2 to about 50 wt % H2O2. 4. The method of claim 1 wherein the hydrogen peroxide is introduced via in situ formation from a hydrogen peroxide-generating compound. 5. The method of claim 1 wherein the amount of hydrogen peroxide introduced into the sulfide-containing aqueous alkali solution provides at least about 2 moles H2O2 per mole of sulfide present in the sulfide-containing alkali solution. 6. The method of claim 5 wherein the amount of hydrogen peroxide introduced into the sulfide-containing aqueous alkali solution provides less than about 4 moles H2O2 per mole of sulfide present in the sulfide-containing alkali solution. 7. The method of claim 1 wherein the sulfide-containing aqueous alkali solution contains at least about 3 ppm sulfide. 8. The method of claim 1 wherein the sulfide-containing alkali solution contains at least about 20 ppm sulfide and the amount of hydrogen peroxide introduced is sufficient to reduce the content of dissolved sulfide to less than about 10 ppm sulfide. 9. The method of claim 1 wherein the sulfide-containing alkali solution contains at least about 10 ppm sulfide and the amount of hydrogen peroxide introduced is sufficient to reduce the content of dissolved sulfide to less than about 5 ppm sulfide. 10. The method of claim 1 wherein the amount of hydrogen peroxide introduced is sufficient to reduce the content of dissolved sulfide to less than about 1 ppm sulfide. 11. The method of claim 1 which further comprises processing the sulfide-containing aqueous alkali solution in a solids removal step to remove suspended solids and treating the solids-depleted sulfide-containing alkali solution with hydrogen peroxide. 12. The method of claim 1 wherein the decomposition of NaHCO3 in the sulfide-depleted alkali solution is effected by heating or steam stripping or evaporation of the alkali solution or combinations of these. 13. The method of claim 1 wherein the evolved carbon dioxide gas contains less than about 100 ppm H2S. 14. The method of claim 1 wherein crystallization of the Na2CO3 values from the sulfide-depleted Na2CO3-enriched alkali solution produces a sodium carbonate species selected from the group consisting of sodium carbonate monohydrate, sodium carbonate decahydrate, sodium sesquicarbonate and anhydrous sodium carbonate.
