Apparatus and methods are provided for treating female urinary incontinence by applying a form of energy to tissue in the vicinity of the urethra and/or bladder outlet to change tissue compliance without substantially narrowing the urethral and/or bladder outlet lumen. The apparatus comprises an elongated shaft having a means for treating urethral tissue and an expandable member deployable distal of the means for treating. The expandable member is configured to be anchored against the bladder outlet to dispose the means for treating at a desired treatment site in the urethra using only tactile feedback. The means for treating may include a needleless RF electrode, an ultrasound transducer, or a cryogenic probe configured to be advanced through a hollow needle, each of which are designed to reduce or eliminate symptoms associated with urinary incontinence.

1. Apparatus for remodeling at least one treatment site within the lower urinary tract of a female patient, the lower urinary tract including a urethra having a urethral lumen and a bladder having a bladder outlet, the apparatus comprising: an elongated shaft having proximal and distal ends;a handle coupled to the proximal end of the elongated shaft and configured to rotate the shaft when the shaft is inserted into the urinary tract;a plurality of electrodes spaced circumferentially in a single plane around the shaft, the electrodes configured to be deployed from the shaft, retracted back into the shaft, and redeployed after rotation of the shaft to treat a submucosal layer of the urethra or bladder outlet to cause a reduction in the compliance of the submucosal layer;an expandable member attached to the distal end of the elongated shaft, the expandable member adapted to be deployed in the bladder and be anchored against the bladder outlet; anda plurality of measurement markers on the shaft, each marker extending around part of a circumference of the shaft, the measurement markers configured to indicate a depth of the shaft within the lower urinary tract. 2. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the plurality of electrodes includes four electrodes spaced circumferentially 90 degrees apart. 3. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the electrodes in the plurality of electrodes are needle electrodes. 4. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the expandable member is a balloon. 5. The apparatus of claim 1, further comprising a control on the handle configured to deploy and retract the electrodes. 6. The apparatus of claim 5, wherein the control is a slideable knob. 7. The apparatus of claim 6, wherein the control is configured such that longitudinal movement of the control deploys and retracts the electrodes. 8. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the electrodes, when deployed or redeployed, are configured to move distally and radially outwards. 9. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein each electrode comprises a shape-memory material that causes a distal end of each electrode to curve to a predetermined shape when deployed. 10. The apparatus of claim 1, further comprising a channel in the shaft configured to deliver cooling fluid to an area near the electrodes. 11. A method of treating urinary incontinence, comprising: inserting a device into a urinary tract, the device having a shaft, an expandable member, and a plurality of electrodes spaced circumferentially in a single plane around the shaft;determining the depth of insertion of the shaft using a plurality of measurement markers on the shaft;expanding the expandable member in a bladder of the urinary tract;deploying the plurality of electrodes from the shaft into a first set of tissue regions in the urinary tract;withdrawing the electrodes from the tissue;after withdrawing the electrodes, rotating the treatment device without axially moving the device; andredeploying the plurality of electrodes into a second set of tissue regions in the urinary tract, the second set of tissue regions circumferentially spaced from the first set of tissue regions. 12. The method of claim 11, further comprising delivering radio frequency energy through the electrodes into the first set of tissue regions and the second set of tissue regions. 13. The method of claim 11, wherein rotating the treatment device comprises rotating the device by a predetermined angle. 14. The method of claim 11, further comprising retracting the device proximally before deploying the plurality of electrodes so as to anchor the deployed expandable member against a bladder outlet. 15. The method of claim 11, wherein deploying and redeploying produces an annular treatment region within the urinary tract. 16. The method of claim 15, further comprising: axially moving the device after the step of redeploying the plurality of electrodes into the second set of tissue regions;deploying the plurality of electrodes from the shaft into a third set of tissue regions in the urinary tract;withdrawing the electrodes from the tissue;after withdrawing the electrodes, rotating the treatment device without axially moving the device; andredeploying the plurality of electrodes into a fourth set of tissue regions in the urinary tract, the fourth set of tissue regions circumferentially spaced from the third set of tissue regions, so as to create a second annular treatment region within the urinary tract. 17. The method of claim 11, wherein the electrodes are configured to heat the first and second sets of tissue regions to a temperature between 70 and 100 degrees Celsius. 18. The method of claim 11, further comprising introducing a cooling fluid to cool tissue adjacent to the tissue regions. 19. The method of claim 11, further comprising activating a control on a handle of the device to perform the steps of deploying, withdrawing, and redeploying the plurality of electrodes. 20. The method of claim 19, wherein activating a control comprises sliding a knob on the handle.
