Apparatus and method for a continuous replenishing of the lift gas and maintaining the proper pressure and lift of a tethered medium altitude aerostat utilizing a novel feed tube running the entire length of the tether. A first end of the feed tube is connected to the aerostat while a second end is connected through a novel slip ring means to a pressure controlled helium ballast chamber and scrubber on the ground to maintain pressure and lift by a reversible compressing pump. A plurality of pressure and temperature sensors and tension gauges strategically placed inside and around the airship continuously monitor the temperature and pressure changes in the aerostat. A data retrieval and communication unit mounted on the aerostat collects measurement data from the pressure, temperature and tension sensors which is relayed to the ground station and the data is used to regulate lifting gas pressure inside the aerostat.

A method of extending the duration of deployment of a tethered aerostat comprising: (a) employing a ground based lift gas reservoir;(b) utilizing a hollow lift gas feed tube in a tether connected to said ground based lift gas reservoir;(c) deploying a tethered aerostat connected to said hollow lift gas feed tube to maintain the tethered aerostat at a predetermined altitude while said tether with the hollow lift gas feed tube is connected;(d) providing a bidirectional flow of lift gas between said tethered aerostat and said ground based lift gas reservoir; and(e) connecting a ground based pump and scrubber to the ground based lift gas reservoir to assist in the step of providing a bidirectional flow of lift gas between said tethered aerostat and said ground based lift gas reservoir. 2. The method of claim 1 further comprising the step of utilizing diurnal pressure and temperature variations to assist said step of having a bidirectional flow of lift gas. 3. The method of claim 1 further comprising the step of purifying a lift gas in said ground based lift gas reservoir. 4. The method of claim 1 further comprising the step of replenishing a lift gas in said ground based lift gas reservoir. 5. The method of claim 1 further comprising the step of employing a slip ring between said hollow lift gas feed tube and said tethered aerostat. 6. The method of claim 5 wherein said slip ring is substantially airtight. 7. The method of claim 6 wherein said slip ring is connected to said ground based lift gas reservoir. 8. The method of claim 1 further comprising the step of collecting environmental data from said tethered aerostat. 9. The method of claim 1 further comprising the step of collecting pressure and temperature data from said tethered aerostat. 10. The method of claim 1 further comprising the step of computing lift gas pressure and lift force. 11. The method of claim 10 further comprising the step of comparing lift gas pressure with computed lift gas pressure and lift force. 12. The method of claim 11 further comprising the step of increasing or decreasing lift gas pressure in said ground based lift gas reservoir to change lift gas efficiency in said tethered aerostat. 13. The method of claim 11 wherein said lift gas is helium. 14. The method of claim 1 further comprising the step of scrubbing said lift gas in said ground based lift gas reservoir. 15. The method of claim 1 further comprising the step of dehumidifying said lift gas in said ground based lift gas reservoir. 16. The method of claim 1 further comprising the step of utilizing a computer to compare the quality of the lift gas in said ground based lift gas reservoir and the lift gas pressure and force in said tethered aerostat as measured by sensors in said tethered aerostat. 17. The method of claim 1 further comprising the step of having electrical cables and optical communications cables embedded in a tether surrounding said hollow lift gas feed tube. 18. The method of claim 17 wherein said lift gas is helium. 19. A process for extending the diurnal deployment of an aerostat comprising: (c) deploying a tethered airship connected to a substantially hollow tether at one end of the substantially hollow tether to maintain the tethered airship at a predetermined altitude while said substantially hollow tether is connected;(b) connecting the other end of the substantially hollow tether to a lift gas reservoir disposed on the surface of the earth;(c) providing a bidirectional flow of lift gas from the lift gas reservoir to the tethered airship;(d) utilizing a pressure sensor to measure pressure in the tethered airship to obtain a measured pressure; and(e) utilizing the measured pressure in the tethered airship to control on the surface of the earth the bidirectional flow of the lift gas from the surface of the earth to the tethered airship. 20. A method for controlling the diurnal buoyancy requirements of a tethered aerostat comprising: (c) deploying a tethered aerostat having a substantially hollow feed tube with one end of the substantially hollow feed tube connected to the tethered aerostat while maintaining the tethered aerostat at a predetermined altitude;(b) connecting the other end of the substantially hollow feed tube to a ballast tank disposed on the surface of the earth to provide a bidirectional flow of lift gas from the surface of the earth to the tethered aerostat;(c) providing pressure and temperature sensors in the tethered airship to collect total lift data of the lift gas in a deployed tethered aerostat; and(d) comparing the total lift data of the lift gas in the deployed tethered aerostat with a calculated lift gas buoyancy force to control the bidirectional flow of the lift gas or bring the tethered aerostat back to the surface of the earth for maintenance.
