The cassette assembly of claim 1, wherein each said cassette comprises a top plate, a mid-plate and a bottom plate. 3. The cassette assembly of claim 1, wherein said reciprocating positive displacement membrane pump pod comprises a curved rigid chamber wall, and said flexible membrane is attached to the rigid chamber wall, said flexible membrane and rigid chamber wall defining a pumping chamber. 4. The cassette assembly of claim 1, wherein said balancing pod comprises a curved rigid chamber wall, and said flexible membrane is attached to the rigid chamber wall so as to define two balance chambers. 5. The cassette assembly of claim 1, wherein said one or more valves is a membrane-based valve. 6. The cassette assembly of claim 5, wherein said membrane-based valve is a volcano valve. 7. The cassette assembly of claim 1, wherein each said one or more fluid conduits comprises a rigid hollow cylindrical member. 8. The cassette assembly of claim 7, wherein at least one of said fluid conduits includes a check valve. 9. The cassette assembly of claim 1, wherein a second reciprocating positive displacement membrane pump pod having an actuation port and a fluid port is positioned between the second cassette and the third cassette, the actuation port and the fluid port of the second membrane pump each communicating with a flow path in one of the second cassette and the third cassette. 10. A cassette assembly comprising: a first cassette, a second cassette and a third cassette, the second cassette interposed between the first cassette and the third cassette, and spaced apart from the first cassette and the third cassette;each cassette comprising a plurality of fluid flow paths and one or more valves, the second cassette being connected to the first and third cassettes by one or more fluid conduits; a mixing pod having a mixing chamber, and an inlet port and an outlet port communicating with the mixing chamber, the mixing pod positioned between the first cassette and the second cassette, and the inlet port and the outlet port each communicating with a flow path in one of the first cassette and the second cassette;a fluid flow balancing pod having a first balance chamber separated from a second balance chamber by a flexible membrane, the balancing pod having a first fluid port communicating with the first balance chamber and a second fluid port communicating with the second balance chamber, the balancing pod positioned between the second cassette and the third cassette, each said fluid port communicating with a flow path in one of the second cassette and the third cassette; whereinthe mixing pod is configured to mix a first fluid with a second fluid to form a third fluid for delivery into the first balance chamber via the fluid port of the first balance chamber, and the balancing pod is configured to displace a substantially equal amount of a fourth fluid out of the second balance chamber via the fluid port of the second balance chamber. 11. The cassette assembly of claim 10, wherein the first fluid is a bicarbonate solution, the second fluid is an acid or salt solution, the third fluid is dialysate solution for flowing into a dialyzer, and the fourth fluid is dialysate solution returning from a dialyzer. 12. The cassette assembly of claim 10, wherein each said cassette comprises a top plate, a mid-plate and a bottom plate. 13. The cassette assembly of claim 10, wherein said balancing pod comprises a curved rigid chamber wall, and said flexible membrane is attached to the rigid chamber wall so as to define two balance chambers. 14. The cassette assembly of claim 10, wherein said one or more valves is a membrane-based valve. 15. The cassette assembly of claim 14, wherein said membrane-based valve is a volcano valve. 16. The cassette assembly of claim 10, wherein each said one or more fluid conduits comprises a rigid hollow cylindrical member. 17. The cassette assembly of claim 16, wherein at least one of said fluid conduits includes a check valve. 18. A cassette assembly comprising: a first cassette, a second cassette and a third cassette, the second cassette interposed between the first cassette and the third cassette, and spaced apart from the first cassette and the third cassette;each cassette comprising a plurality of fluid flow paths and one or more valves, the second cassette being connected to the first and third cassettes by one or more fluid conduits; a reciprocating positive displacement membrane pump pod having an actuation chamber separated from a pumping chamber by a flexible membrane, the pump pod having an actuation port communicating with the actuation chamber and at least one fluid port communicating with the pumping chamber, the pump pod positioned between the first cassette and the second cassette, and the actuation port and the fluid port each communicating with a flow path in one of the first cassette and the second cassette;a mixing pod having a mixing chamber, and an inlet port and an outlet port communicating with the mixing chamber, the mixing pod positioned between the first cassette and the second cassette, and the inlet port and the outlet port each communicating with a flow path in one of the first cassette and the second cassette;a fluid flow balancing pod having a first balance chamber separated from a second balance chamber by a flexible membrane, the balancing pod having a first fluid port communicating with the first balance chamber and a second fluid port communicating with the second balance chamber, the balancing pod positioned between the second cassette and the third cassette, each said fluid port communicating with a flow path in one of the second cassette and the third cassette; whereinthe mixing pod is configured to mix a first fluid with a second fluid to form a third fluid, the pump pod is configured to deliver the third fluid into the first balance chamber via the fluid port of the first balance chamber, and the balancing pod is configured to displace a substantially equal amount of a fourth fluid out of the second balance chamber via the fluid port of the second balance chamber. 19.
