An orthopedic screw is used in a fixation device for treating fractures. The device has a body with holes to accept the bone screws. The bone screws have a layer of bioresorbable material on the shaft. Engagement between the bone screws and the body is initially through the bioresorbable material, which engagement rigidly fixes the relative angular orientation between the bone screws and the body when the device is applied to a bone. As the bioresrobable material is resorbed the angular relation between the bone screws and the body is no longer rigidly fixed, thereby effecting a transformation from rigid osteosynthesis to flexible osteosynthesis to allow micromotion between the bone fragments which promotes healing.

An orthopedic screw for use with a fixation device connecting a first bone portion to a second bone portion, said fixation device including a body for linking said first bone portion to said second bone portion, said body having a plurality of holes extending therethrough, said screw being insertable though at least one of said holes extending through said body, said screw comprising: a shaft having a distal end and an oppositely disposed proximal end;external helical screw threads extending along at least a first portion of said shaft;a head attached to said proximal end of said shaft; anda layer of bioresorbable material positioned surrounding a second portion of said shaft and rotationally fixedly attached thereto to prevent relative rotation between said shaft and said layer of bioresorbable material, said layer of bioresorbable material having an outer surface engageable with said body to initially fix said screw at a desired angular position relatively to said body, said screw being angularly movable with respect to said body upon resorbtion of at least a portion of said bioresorbable layer. 2. The screw according to claim 1, wherein said outer surface of said layer of bioresorbable material comprises a substantially smooth surface. 3. The screw according to claim 2, wherein said outer surface of said layer of bioresorbable material comprises a cylindrical surface with a lengthwise constant outer diameter. 4. The screw according to claim 2, wherein said outer surface of said layer of bioresorbable material comprises a conical surface having a larger outer diameter at a point adjacent to said head than at a point distal to said head. 5. The screw according to claim 2, wherein said outer surface of said layer of bioresorbable material comprises a spherical surface. 6. The screw according to claim 1, further comprising second external helical screw threads extending along said outer surface of said layer of bioresorbable material. 7. The screw according to claim 6, wherein said outer surface of said layer of bioresorbable material comprises a cylindrical surface with a lengthwise constant outer diameter. 8. The screw according to claim 6, wherein said outer surface of said layer of bioresorbable material comprises a conical surface having a larger outer diameter at a point adjacent to said head than at a point distal to said head. 9. The screw according to claim 6, wherein said outer surface of said layer of bioresorbable material comprises a spherical surface. 10. The screw according to claim 1, wherein said second portion of said shaft is located adjacent to said head. 11. The screw according to claim 1, wherein said second portion of said shaft is located in spaced relation away from said head. 12. The screw according to claim 1, further comprising cutting flutes positioned on said distal end of said shaft. 13. The screw according to claim 1, wherein said screw is cannulated. 14. The screw according to claim 1, wherein said second portion of said shaft has external helical screw threads extending lengthwise therealong. 15. The screw according to claim 1, wherein said second portion of said shaft has a plurality of ribs projecting radially outwardly therefrom. 16. The screw according to claim 15, wherein said ribs extend lengthwise along said shaft. 17. The screw according to claim 15, wherein said ribs extend circumferentially around said shaft. 18. The screw according to claim 15, wherein said ribs extend helically around said shaft. 19. The screw according to claim 1, wherein said second portion of said shaft has a plurality of channels therein. 20. The screw according to claim 19, wherein said channels extend lengthwise along said shaft. 21. The screw according to claim 19, wherein said channels extend circumferentially around said shaft. 22. The screw according to claim 21, wherein said channels are arranged in a helical pattern around said shaft. 23. The screw according to claim 1, wherein said second portion of said shaft is knurled. 24. The screw according to claim 1, wherein said second portion of said shaft has a rough-textured surface. 25. The screw according to claim 24, wherein said rough-textured surface comprises a powdered metal coating. 26. The screw according to claim 24, wherein said rough-textured surface comprises a sand-blasted surface. 27. The screw according to claim 1, wherein said second portion of said shaft has a non-round cross section. 28. The screw according to claim 27, wherein said non-round cross section is oval. 29. The screw according to claim 27, wherein said non-round cross section is polygonal. 30. The screw according to claim 1, wherein said second portion of said shaft has a conical outer surface, said conical outer surface having a smaller diameter at a position adjacent to said head than at a position distal to said head. 31. The screw according to claim 1, wherein said bioresorbable material is selected form the group consisting of polylactic acid (PLA), poly-L-lactic-co-glycolic acid (PLGA), poly-D/L-lactic acid with or without polyglycolic acid (PDLLA, PDLLA-co-PGA), poly-L-lactic acid with or without β-tricalcium phosphate (PLLA, PLLA-TCP), poly-L-lactic acid with hydroxyapatite (PLLA-HA), polycaprolactone (PCL), polycaprolactone-Calcium Phosphate (PCL-CaP), poly(L-lactide-co-D,L-lactide) (PLADLA), hydroxyapatite (HA), tricalcium phosphate (β-TCP), nanodiamond particles (ND) and combinations thereof. 32. The screw according to claim 1, wherein said bioresorbable material expands upon contact with bodily fluids. 33. The screw according to claim 32, wherein said bioresorbable material is selected from the group consisting of copolymer lactic glycolic acid, biodegradeable self-expanding poly-L,D-lactide, PDLLA comprising D-Lactide and L-lactide and poly-L-lactide and poly-ε-caprolactone homopolymers, methylmethacrylate and acrylic acid and cross linking agent allymelhacrylate, and combinations thereof.
