The document processing device of claim 1, wherein the input receptacle is configured to receive checks, and wherein the stack of documents further includes checks, the one or more processing units further configured to extract a checking account number and bank identification data from generated image data of each conveyed check. 3. The document processing device of claim 2, wherein the currency bills and checks are received in a single stack of commingled documents. 4. The document processing device of claim 2, wherein each of the currency bills and checks have a wide edge and a narrow edge, and wherein the transport system is configured to convey currency bills and checks with a wide edge of each generally perpendicular to the direction of conveyance. 5. The document processing device of claim 1, wherein the input receptacle is configured to receive a stack of checks separate from the stack of documents including currency bills. 6. The document processing device of claim 1, wherein the currency bills are conveyed, the image data are generated, and the serial numbers are extracted at a rate of at least 1,000 bills per minute. 7. The document processing device of claim 6, wherein the currency bills are U.S. currency bills. 8. The document processing device of claim 1, wherein the currency bills are conveyed, the image data are generated, the serial numbers are extracted, and the denominations are determined at a rate of at least 800 bills per minute. 9. The document processing device of claim 8, wherein the currency bills are U.S. currency bills. 10. The document processing device of claim 1, further comprising a communication port configured for transferring the extracted serial numbers to an external memory. 11. The document processing device of claim 1, further comprising a communication port configured for transferring the extracted serial numbers to a network. 12. The document processing device of claim 1, further comprising a communication port configured for transferring the extracted serial numbers to a print device. 13. The document processing device of claim 1, further comprising an exterior housing, the imaging unit, the transport system, and at least one of the one or more processing units disposed within the exterior housing; and the device further comprising a touch-screen display coupled to the exterior housing, the touch-screen display being associated with the at least one of the one or more processing units. 14. The document processing device of claim 1, further comprising a counterfeit detector for identifying suspect currency bills. 15. The document processing device of claim 14, wherein the counterfeit detector includes a magnetic sensor. 16. The document processing device of claim 14, wherein the counterfeit detector includes an optical sensor configured to detect light frequencies outside of the human-perceptible range. 17. The document processing device of claim 1, wherein the currency bills have a wide edge and a narrow edge, and wherein the transport system is configured to convey the currency bills with the wide edge of each currency bill generally perpendicular to the direction of conveyance. 18. The document processing device of claim 1, wherein the one or more processing units are configured to electronically tag the extracted serial number and determined denomination of a conveyed currency bill with the associated currency bill image data. 19. The document processing device of claim 1, wherein the output receptacle is configured to securely store at least a portion of the documents received from the transport system. 20. The document processing device of claim 19, wherein the currency bills are conveyed, the image data are generated, and the serial numbers are extracted at a rate of at least 800 bills per minute. 21. The document processing device of claim 19, wherein the currency bills are conveyed, the image data are generated, and the serial numbers are extracted at a rate of at least 1,000 bills per minute. 22. The document processing device of claim 19, wherein the currency bills have a wide edge and a narrow edge, and wherein the transport system is configured to convey the currency bills with a wide edge of each currency bill being generally perpendicular to the direction of conveyance by the transport system. 23. The document processing device of claim 1, further comprising a secure housing defining an outer insecure area and an inner secure area, wherein the input receptacle is at least partially located in the outer insecure area, and wherein the imaging unit, transport system, output receptacle, and at least one of the one or more processing units are located in the inner secure area such that a document after being conveyed is generally inaccessible to an operator of the device. 24. The document processing device of claim 23, wherein the currency bills are conveyed, the image data are generated, and the serial numbers are extracted at a rate of at least 800 bills per minute. 25. The document processing device of claim 23, wherein the currency bills are conveyed, the image data are generated, and the serial numbers are extracted at a rate of at least 1,000 bills per minute. 26. The document processing device of claim 23, wherein the currency bills have a wide edge and a narrow edge, and wherein the transport system is configured to convey the currency bills with a wide edge of each currency bill generally perpendicular to the direction of conveyance by the transport system. 27. A table-top device configured to process currency bills, the table-top device comprising: an input receptacle configured to receive a stack of currency bills;an image scanner including a sensor;a transport mechanism configured to transport each of the currency bills received from the input receptacle along a transport path past the sensor, the image scanner configured to obtain an electronic image of at least a portion of each passing currency bill, the obtained electronic images configured to be reproducible as a visually readable image of each passing currency bill on an electronic display;an output receptacle configured to receive the currency bills from the transport mechanism after the documents pass the sensor;one or more processing units configured to control actuation of the transport mechanism and further configured to control communication of each electronic image of the currency bills, the one or more processing units further configured to extract serial numbers of the transported currency bills from the electronic images and to determine the denominations of the transported currency bills using the electronic images; anda memory associated with the one or more processing units, the memory configured to the store electronic images of the currency bills, the associated extracted serial numbers, and the associated determined denominations. 28. The table-top device of claim 27, wherein the input receptacle is further configured to receive a stack of checks, the transport mechanism configured to receive each check from the input receptacle and transport each of the checks past the sensor, the image scanner configured to obtain an electronic image of each passing check, the obtained electronic images configured to be reproducible as a visually readable image of each passing check on an electronic display, the one or more processing units configured to extract a checking account number and bank identification data from the electronic images of each transported check, the memory configured to store the electronic images of the checks and the extracted account number and identification data. 29. The table-top device of claim 28, wherein the currency bills and checks are received by the input receptacle as two separate stacks. 30. The table-top device of claim 28, wherein the currency bills and checks are commingled and are further received by the input receptacle as a single stack. 31. The table-top device of claim 28, wherein each of the currency bills and checks have a wide edge and a narrow edge, and wherein the transport mechanism is configured to transport the currency bills and checks with a wide edge of each generally perpendicular to the direction of transport. 32. The table-top device of claim 28, wherein the transport mechanism comprises a single transport path along which the transport mechanism is configured to convey the checks and currency bills. 33. The table-top device of claim 27, wherein the currency bills are transported, the electronic images are obtained, and the serial numbers are extracted at a rate of at least 1,000 bills per minute. 34. The table-top device of claim 27, wherein the currency bills are transported, the electronic images are obtained, and the serial numbers are extracted at a rate of at least 800 bills per minute. 35. The table-top device of claim 27, further comprising a communication port configured for transferring the extracted serial numbers to an external device. 36. The table-top device of claim 27, further comprising a counterfeit detector for identifying suspect currency bills, the counterfeit detector including a magnetic sensor or an optical sensor configured to detect light frequencies outside of the human-perceptible range. 38. The table-top device of claim 27, wherein the currency bills have a wide edge and a narrow edge, and wherein the transport system is configured to transport the currency bills with a wide edge of each currency bill generally perpendicular to the direction of transport. 39. The table-top device of claim 27, wherein the one or more processing units are configured to electronically tag the extracted serial number and the determined denomination for a currency bill with the associated electronic image. 40. The table-top device of claim 27, further comprising: a display configured to display the electronic image of a serial number portion of an imaged currency bill; anda data entry element associated with the display, the data entry element configured for user input of information related to the currency bill. 41. The table-top device of claim 27, further comprising a secure housing defining an outer insecure area and an inner secure area, wherein the input receptacle is at least partially located in the outer insecure area, and wherein the image scanner, transport mechanism, output receptacle, and at least one of the one or more processing units are located in the inner secure area such that a document after being transported is generally inaccessible to an operator of the device. 42. The table-top device of claim 41, wherein the currency bills are transported, the images are obtained, and the serial numbers are extracted at a rate of at least 800 bills per minute. 43. The table-top device of claim 41, wherein the currency bills are transported, the images are obtained, and the serial numbers are extracted at a rate of at least 1,000 bills per minute. 44. A method for processing documents including currency bills using a document processing device controlled via one or more processing units, the method comprising: conveying received currency bills along a transport path;obtaining images of the conveyed currency bills via an image scanner at least partially adjacent to the transport path, the obtained images being reproducible as a visually readable image of each conveyed currency bill for electronic display;extracting serial numbers from the obtained images of the conveyed currency bills;determining denominations from the obtained images of the conveyed currency bills; andstoring the obtained images, extracted serial numbers, and determined denominations in a memory. 46. The method of claim 45, wherein the documents further include checks, and the method further comprising conveying the received checks along the transport path or another transport path, obtaining images of the conveyed checks, and extracting a checking account number and bank identification data from the obtained images of the conveyed checks. 47. The method of claim 46, further comprising receiving the currency bills and checks as two separate stacks of documents, and the conveying of the received currency bills and the received checks includes first conveying one of the two separate stacks of documents and then conveying the other of the two separate stacks of documents. 48. The method of claim 46, further comprising receiving the currency bills and checks in a single stack of commingled documents. 49. The method of claim 46, wherein each of the currency bills and checks has a wide edge and a narrow edge, and wherein the act of conveying includes conveying the currency bills and checks with a wide edge of each generally perpendicular to the direction of conveyance along the transport path. 50. The method of claim 45, wherein the currency bills are conveyed, the images are obtained, and the serial numbers are extracted at a rate of at least 1,000 bills per minute. 51. The method of claim 50, wherein the currency bills are U.S. currency bills. 52. The method of claim 45, wherein the currency bills are conveyed, the images are obtained, and the serial numbers are extracted at a rate of at least 800 bills per minute. 53. The method of claim 45, further comprising tagging the extracted serial number and the determined denomination from a currency bill with the associated currency bill image. 62. The method of claim 45, further comprising securely storing the conveyed currency bills in the document processing device. 63. The method of claim 62, wherein the currency bills are conveyed, the images are obtained, the serial numbers are extracted, and the denominations are determined at a rate of at least 800 bills per minute. 64. The method of claim 62, wherein the currency bills are conveyed, the images are obtained, the serial numbers are extracted, and the denominations are determined at a rate of at least 1,000 bills per minute. 65. The method of claim 62, wherein the currency bills have a wide edge and a narrow edge, and the conveying comprises conveying the currency bills with a wide edge of each currency bill being generally perpendicular to the direction of conveyance along the transport path.
