An adjustable drill has a drill body having a face surface with a directional feature provided therewith. At least one cartridge is mounted adjacent the face surface and selectively slidable along the directional feature to provide adjustment. At least one insert is releasably affixed in an insert pocket provided in the cartridge. In further examples, the adjustable drill may have a central cutting system in combination with the adjustable cartridge type system, wherein the central cutting system may be modular. There may also be provided a modular type of holder arrangement to provide flexibility to adapt the system for various applications.

An adjustable drill comprising: a drill body having a rotational axis, comprising: at least two top face surfaces:a drive feature formed in association with the at least two top face surfaces;a longitudinal gullet extending from the top face surfaces along at least a portion of the drill body;at least one cartridge adjacent each top face surface and having a mating surface to be engaged by the drive feature, with at least one cartridge being movable relative to the top face surface, and cooperating with the drive feature to be driven therewith;the cartridges including a cutting face comprising at least one cutting insert pocket positioned adjacent the top edge of the drill body;a fastening system for releasably affixing the cartridges to the drill body; andat least one cutting insert releasably affixed in the insert pocket and a centrally disposed drilling system positioned adjacent the cartridges by a positioning configuration and having first and second cutting edges extending radially from the rotational axis. 2. The adjustable drill according to claim 1, wherein the face surfaces are angled obliquely away from a plane perpendicular to the rotational axis of the drill. 3. The adjustable drill according to claim 1, wherein the at least one cartridge comprises at least two insert pockets. 4. The adjustable drill according to claim 1, wherein the drive feature is a plurality of longitudinal serrations. 5. The adjustable drill according to claim 1, wherein the drive feature is at least one longitudinal keyway. 6. The adjustable drill according to claim 1, the top face surface angled away from a plane perpendicular to the rotational axis of the drill by ½ to 10 degrees or more. 7. The adjustable drill according to claim 1, wherein the at least one insert is a trigon insert having three sides with cutting edges, and first and second clearance surfaces adjacent the cutting edges of the insert. 8. The adjustable drill according to claim 1, wherein the central cutting system first and second cutting edges engage a workpiece before the cutting insert. 9. The adjustable drill according to claim 8, wherein the first and second cutting edges provided in association with a central cutting system extend at an angle toward the drill body, and are selected from the group consisting of a cutting insert, a solid carbide cutting member or combinations thereof. 10. The adjustable drill according to claim 9, wherein the central cutting system includes a replaceable holder body in which at least one replaceable cutting insert is positioned. 11. The adjustable drill according to claim 10, wherein the replaceable holder body is positioned in a bore in the drill body, and is secured with the drill body. 12. The adjustable drill according to claim 9, wherein the cutting insert is a blade type of insert. 13. The adjustable drill according to claim 1, wherein the centrally disposed drilling system is a modular system and wherein different drilling systems are accepted by the positioning configuration. 14. The adjustable drill according to claim 1, wherein the centrally disposed drilling system includes a replaceable holder body in which at least one replaceable cutting insert is positioned. 15. The adjustable drill according to claim 1, wherein the centrally disposed drilling system includes at least one drilling insert and allows replacement of the drilling insert. 16. The adjustable drill according to claim 1, further comprising a modular drill body, having a plurality of sections including a shank portion, at least one extension portion and a head portion. 17. The adjustable drill according to claim 16, wherein the modular drill body allows different shank configurations to be replaced on the drill body, or different lengths of drill body to be formed via the at least one extension portion, and alternative head configurations to be interchanged. 18. The adjustable drill according to claim 16, wherein the at least one extension portion has mating portions. 19. The adjustable drill according to claim 18, wherein the mating portion has a diameter to extend into or receive the connecting portion of shank portion or another extension portion or head portion. 20. The adjustable drill according to claim 18, wherein the mating portion includes a groove positioned to correspond to apertures on a mating portion of shank portion or other extension portion or head portion. 21. The adjustable drill according to claim 20 wherein thrust screws are used in association with the apertures to engage the groove and retain the at least one extension portion with shank portion or other extension portion or head portion. 22. The adjustable drill according to claim 16, wherein alignment of the at least one extension portion with the shank portion or other extension portion or head portion is provided by drive or key members provided in association with keyways that provide orientation of the components and drive the modular connection between the components. 23. The adjustable drill according to claim 16 wherein the connection between an extension portion or head portion and an extension portion or shank portion includes a post extension and a receiving aperture in which offset cone members engage. 24. The adjustable drill according to claim 23 further including cone recesses provided in a center stud to draw in a cone on one end and inverted cone on other end which engage and lock into one another in the receiving aperture. 25. The adjustable drill according to any of claim 16, wherein the head portion includes an alignment or orientation pin which cooperates with an aperture on a shank portion or extension portion to align these members. 26. An adjustable drill comprising, a holder body having at least one face surface comprising a drive feature formed in association with the at least one face surface, the holder body including a plurality of sections including a shank portion, at least one extension portion and a head portion;at least one adjustable cartridge selectively positionable with the at least one face surface and selectively movable relative to the at least one face surface, and cooperating with the drive feature to be driven therewith;the at least one cartridge including a cutting face comprising at least one insert pocket and at least one insert releasably affixed in the insert pocket; anda central cutting system including first and second cutting edges disposed adjacent the rotational axis of the drill. 27. The adjustable drill according to claim 26, wherein the first and second cutting edges are provided in association with a central cutting system selected from the group consisting of a cutting insert, a solid carbide cutting member or combinations thereof. 28. The adjustable drill according to claim 27, wherein the central cutting system includes a replaceable holder body in which a replaceable cutting insert is selectively positioned. 29. The adjustable drill according to claim 28, wherein the replaceable holder body is selectively positioned in a bore in the holder body, and is selectively secured with the holder body. 30. The adjustable drill according to claim 26, wherein the holder body allows different shank configurations to be replaced on the drill body, or different lengths of drill body to be formed via the at least one extension portion, and alternative head configurations to be interchanged. 31. The adjustable drill according to claim 30, wherein the mating portion includes a groove positioned to correspond to apertures on a mating portion of shank portion or other extension portion or head portion. 32. The adjustable drill according to claim 31, wherein alignment of the at least one extension portion with the shank portion or other extension portion or head portion is provided by drive or key members provided in association with keyways that provide orientation of the components and drive the modular connection between the components.
