A network interface device may include an offload engine that receives control of state information while a particular connection is offloaded. Control of the state information for the particular connection may be split between the network interface device and a host. The at least one connection variables may be updated and provided to the host.
1. A network interface device comprising: an offload engine; anda memory that is operable to store at least one attribute of an open connection;while a connection is open between a first computer and a second computer, the offload engine receives at least one connection state from the first computer
1. A network interface device comprising: an offload engine; anda memory that is operable to store at least one attribute of an open connection;while a connection is open between a first computer and a second computer, the offload engine receives at least one connection state from the first computer, wherein the offload engine is operable to update the at least one connection state;when the connection is closed, the offload engine is operable to return the connection state to a stack in the first computer. 2. The network interface device of claim 1, wherein attributes of the open connection include an IP address, a port being used, and a packet sequence number. 3. The network interface device of claim 1, wherein connection states from the first computer include performance sensitive connection states and nonperformance sensitive connection states. 4. The network interface device of claim 3, wherein the at least one connection state received by the offload engine includes a performance sensitive connection state. 5. The network interface device of claim 3, wherein at least one nonperformance sensitive connection state is controlled by the first computer while a connection is open between the first computer and the second computer. 6. The network interface device of claim 1, wherein control of at least one connection state is maintained by the first computer, thereby allowing the first computer to provide security against malicious attacks. 7. The network interface device of claim 6, wherein the at least one connection state is associated with connection setup. 8. The network interface device of claim 6, wherein the at least one connection state is non-performance sensitive. 9. The network interface device of claim 1, wherein the offload engine processes incoming data packets. 10. The network interface device of claim 1, wherein the offload engine receives the at least one connection state from the first computer by pulling from the stack in the first computer. 11. The network interface device of claim 1, wherein the offload engine pushes an updated connection state onto the stack in the first computer. 12. The network interface device of claim 1, wherein the offload engine is a TCP/IP offload engine. 13. A method comprising: storing at least one attribute of a connection that is open between a first computer and a second computer;receiving, in an offload engine, a connection state from the first computer while the connection is open between the first computer and the second computer, updating the received connection state; andreturning, by the offload engine, the updated connection state to a stack in the first computer. 14. The method of claim 13, wherein the received connection state corresponds to a performance sensitive connection state. 15. The method of claim 13, wherein the received connection state corresponds to a nonperformance sensitive connection state. 16. The method of claim 13, wherein receiving the connection state from the first computer comprises pulling data from the stack in the first computer. 17. The method of claim 13, further comprising pushing the updated connection state onto the stack in the first computer. 18. A network device comprising: processing circuitry operable to offload processing to the network device by: storing at least one attribute of a connection that is open between a first computer and a second computer;receiving a connection state from the first computer while the connection is open between the first computer and the second computer, updating the received connection state; andreturning the updated connection state to a stack in the first computer. 19. The network device of claim 18, wherein the receiving the connection state from the first computer comprises pulling data from the stack in the first computer. 20. The network device of claim 18, wherein the processing circuitry is further operable to offload the processing to the network device by pushing the updated connection state onto the stack in the first computer.
