The components that are predominantly lean beef will settle to the bottom of the liquid, and components that are predominantly fat will rise to the surface of the liquid. The separated components having predominantly lean beef can be removed from the liquid as a reduced fat ground beef product. The method can be practiced with any material containing fat, including plants and animals.

The method of claim 1, wherein the fluid is maintained at a temperature in the range of about 24° F. (−4.4° C.) to about 110° F. (43.3° C.) and a pressure in the range of about 280 psia (1931 kPa) to about 2500 psia (17237 kPa). 4. A method of reducing the fat content of a material, comprising: combining a material comprising a separable fat component with a fluid comprising aqueous carbonic acid, liquid carbon dioxide and water, an aqueous alkaline solution, or an aqueous acid, wherein the density of the fluid is greater than the density of the fat component of the material;allowing the fat component from the material to separate from the material and to stratify forming a first stratum in the fluid, thereby leaving a reduced fat component of the material;allowing the reduced fat component to stratify forming a second stratum in the fluid; andcollecting the second stratum comprising reduced fat component. 5. The method of claim 4, wherein the fluid further comprises carbon monoxide. 6. The method of claim 4, wherein the fluid comprises carbon dioxide and the pressure of the carbon dioxide is about 280 psia (1931 kPa) to about 2500 psia (17237 kPa). 7. The method of claim 4, further comprising reducing the material to smaller material pieces before combining with the fluid. 8. The method of claim 4, further comprising collecting the first stratum, allowing the fat component in the first stratum to stratify in a third stratum in the presence of a fluid, and allowing any reduced fat component in the first stratum to stratify in a fourth stratum in the presence of a fluid, wherein the density of the fluid is greater than the density of the fat component and less than the density of the reduced fat component. 9. The method of claim 4, further comprising collecting the first stratum, allowing the fat component in the first stratum to stratify in a third stratum in the presence of a fluid, allowing any reduced fat component in the first stratum to stratify in a fourth stratum in the presence of a fluid, collecting the reduced fat component from the fourth stratum and combining the reduced fat component from the fourth stratum with the reduced fat component collected from the second stratum. 10. The method of claim 4, further comprising separating fluid from the first stratum and the second stratum, combining the separated fluid from the first stratum and the second stratum, and recycling the separated fluid with new material. 11. The method of claim 4, wherein the fat component comprises predominantly fat and the reduced fat component comprises predominantly lean beef. 12. A method for separating fat from a material containing fat, comprising: combining a material with a fluid comprising carbonic acid, liquid carbon dioxide and water, water, an alkaline solution or an acid, wherein the material comprises components that comprise predominantly fat and components that comprise predominantly lean beef;transferring the material and fluid through a conduit, wherein the conduit comprises more than one outlet located along the length and at a lower section of the conduit;allowing the components that comprise predominantly fat to rise in the fluid as the fluid and material are transferred through the conduit; andremoving the components that comprise predominantly lean beef that settle to the bottom of the conduit from the more than one outlet at the lower section of the conduit as the fluid and material are transferred through the conduit, wherein components that are removed from the more than one outlet become higher in fat as the fluid progresses through the conduit. 13. The method of claim 12, further comprising reducing the material to smaller material pieces before combining with the fluid. 14. The method of claim 12, further comprising adding water to the fluid. 15. The method of claim 1, wherein the fat and lean beef are removed in a nonfrozen state. 16. The method of claim 4, wherein the reduced fat component is collected in a nonfrozen state.
