A welding system, comprising: an engine configured to drive a generator to produce a first power output, wherein the engine is rated below approximately 25 horsepower;an energy storage device configured to discharge energy to produce a second power output;a charger coupled to the energy storage device and to the engine and configured to receive power from the engine and to charge the energy storage device with the received power; anda controller configured to control access to power from the energy storage device to produce the second power output when a commanded output is less than or equal to a first threshold, to control access to power from the engine to produce the first power output when the commanded output is between the first threshold and a second threshold, and to control access to power from both the energy storage device to produce the second power output and the engine to produce the first power output when the commanded output is greater than or equal to the second threshold. 2. The welding system of claim 1, wherein the first threshold is equal to approximately 150 amps, and the second threshold is equal to approximately 300 amps. 3. The welding system of claim 1, further comprising a first power converter coupled to at least one of the engine and the energy storage device to convert at least one of the first power output and the second power output to a weld power output. 4. The welding system of claim 3, further comprising a second power converter coupled to the energy storage device to convert the second power output to a weld power output, and wherein the first power converter is coupled to the engine to convert the first power output to at least one of a weld power output and an auxiliary power output. 5. The welding system of claim 1, wherein the controller is configured to access power from the energy storage device to produce the second power output when the welding system is powered on and to allow a delay period to elapse before accessing power from the engine to produce the first power output. 6. The welding system of claim 1, wherein the controller is configured to maintain the first power output at a predetermined substantially constant level and to alter the level of the second power output when the commanded output is greater than or equal to the second threshold, wherein the first power output and the second power output sum to service the commanded output. 7. The welding system of claim 1, wherein the controller is configured to access power from the engine to produce the first power output when a pause in the welding process is detected. 8. The welding system of claim 1, wherein the controller is configured to access power from the engine to produce the first power output when welding from the energy storage device. 9. The welding system of claim 1, wherein the charger is configured to charge the energy storage device when the commanded output is between the first threshold and the second threshold. 10. The welding system of claim 1, wherein the controller is configured to deactivate the engine to prevent the generation of the first power output during non-welding periods. 11. The welding system of claim 1, wherein the engine is further configured to produce an auxiliary power output when an auxiliary load is detected. 12. A welding power supply, comprising: an engine configured to drive a generator to produce a first power output;an energy storage device configured to discharge energy to produce a second power output; andcontrol circuitry configured to detect a commanded output and to meet the commanded output by controlling access to power from the energy storage device to produce the second power output when the commanded output is below a first predetermined level and, when the commanded output is equal to or above the first predetermined level, to meet the commanded output by controlling access to power from the engine to produce the first power output at a substantially constant level and from the energy storage device to produce the second power output at a level equal to the difference between the commanded output and the substantially constant level produced by the engine. 13. The welding power supply of claim 12, wherein the energy storage device is further configured to discharge to produce a synthetic auxiliary power. 14. The welding power supply of claim 12, further comprising a power converter configured to receive the first power and the second power and to output at least one of a weld power output, an auxiliary power output, and a synthetic auxiliary power output. 15. The welding power supply of claim 12, further comprising a charger configured to receive the first power output and to charge the energy storage device to a predetermined level by utilizing the first power output. 16. The welding power supply of claim 12, wherein the first predetermined level is approximately 150 amps. 17. The welding power supply of claim 12, wherein the engine is rated below approximately 75 horsepower.
