Method and apparatus for high rate code-division multiple access wireless communication is described. Each of a channel encoded data is modulated by an associated code having a small number of pseudo-noise spreading chips per orthogonal waveform period, thus producing a set of streams of modulated symbols. Each of the set of streams of modulated symbols is then gain adjusted, and combined to yield two streams of combined symbols. The combination is the set of streams is carried out to reduce a peak-to-average ratio of the transmission. The resulting two combined symbol streams are modulated by a complex multiplyer using a user long code and a pseudorandom spreading code (PN code) and upconverted for transmission.

A method of generating data for transmission from a subscriber unit to a base station, the method comprising: modulating, at the subscriber unit, each of a plurality of channels of data with an associated code to produce a plurality of streams of modulated symbols, wherein the modulating comprises: multiplying a user first channel data with a first code to produce a first stream of the modulated symbols, wherein one channel of the user first channel data is a BPSK channel and is designated for transmission of voice data;multiplying a user second channel data with a second code to produce a second stream of the modulated symbols, wherein one channel of the user second channel data is a QPSK channel and is designated for transmission of digital data;combining the first stream of the modulated symbols and the second stream of the modulated symbols to generate a combined stream; andcomplex multiplying the combined stream with one or more pseudorandom spreading codes to generate a complex multiplication result for transmission over a bandwidth; andfiltering and upconverting a set of modulated symbols from the complex multiplication result to a carrier frequency for transmission from the subscriber unit to the base station. 2. The method of claim 1, further comprising determining at least the one or more pseudorandom spreading codes or the codes associated with the plurality of channels of data such that the transmission from the subscriber unit fits with the bandwidth. 3. The method of claim 1, wherein at least one channel of the user first channel date or one channel of the second channel data includes time-sensitive data. 4. The method of claim 1, further comprising adjusting, at the subscriber unit, gains the first stream of the modulated symbols and the second stream of the modulated symbols. 5. The method of claim 1, wherein the modulating, at the subscriber unit, each of the plurality of channels of data further comprises modulating control data with a third code to produce a third stream of the modulated symbols. 6. The method of claim 1, wherein the first code associated with the user first channel data has a longer length then the second code associated with the user second channel data. 7. A system for generating data for transmission from a subscriber unit to a base station comprising: means for modulating, at the subscriber unit, each of a plurality of channels of data with an associated code to produce a plurality of streams of modulated symbols, where the means for modulating comprises: means for multiplying a user first channel data with a first code to produce a first stream of the modulated symbols, wherein one channel of the user first channel data is a BPSK channel and is designated for transmission of voice data;means for multiplying a user second channel data with a second code to produce a second stream of the modulated symbols, wherein one channel of the user second channel data is a QPSK channel and is designated for transmission of digital data;means for combining the first stream of the modulated symbols and the second stream of the modulated symbols to generate a combined stream; andmeans for complex multiplying the combined stream with one or more pseudorandom spreading codes to generate a complex multiplication result for transmission over a bandwidth; andmeans for filtering and upconverting a set of modulated symbols from the complex multiplication result to a carrier frequency for transmission from the subscriber unit to the base station. 8. The system of claim 7, wherein at least one channel of the user first channel data or one channel of the user second channel data includes time-sensitive data. 9. The system of claim 7, further comprising means for adjusting gains of the first stream of the modulated symbols and the second stream of the modulated symbols. 10. The system of claim 7, wherein the means for modulating each of the plurality of channels of data further comprises means for modulating control data with a third code to produce a third stream of the modulated symbols. 11. The system of claim 7, wherein the first code associated with the user first channel data has a longer length then the second code associated with the user second channel data. 12. A subscriber unit comprising: a modulator configured to modulate each of a plurality of channels of data with an associated code to produce a plurality of streams of modulated symbols, wherein the modulator comprises: a first multiplier configured to modulate a user first channel data with a first code to produce a first stream of the modulated symbols, wherein one channel of the user first channel data is a BPSK channel and is designated for transmission of voice data;a second multiplier configured to modulate a user second channel data with a second code to produce a second stream of the modulated symbols, wherein one channel of the user second channel data is a QPSK channel and is designated for transmission of digital data;a combiner configured to combine the first stream of the modulated symbols and the second stream of the modulated symbols to generate a combined stream; anda complex multiplier configured to multiply the combined stream with one or more pseudorandom spreading codes to generate a complex multiplication result for transmission over a bandwidth; andan RF processing system configured to filter and upconvert a set of modulated symbols from the complex multiplication result to a carrier frequency for transmission from the subscriber unit to a base station. 13. The subscriber unit of claim 12, wherein each of the first and second multipliers or the combiner is further configured to determine at least the one or more pseudorandom spreading codes or the codes associated with the plurality of channels of data such that the transmission from the subscriber unit fits with the bandwidth. 14. The subscriber unit of claim 12, wherein at least one channel of the user first channel data or one channel of the user second channel data includes time-sensitive data. 15. The subscriber unit of claim 12, further comprising a plurality of gain adjusters configured to adjust gains of the first stream of the modulated symbols and the second stream of the modulated symbols. 16. The subscriber unit of claim 12, wherein the first and second multipliers configured to modulate each of the plurality of channels of data further comprises a third multiplier configured to modulate control data with a third code to produce a third stream of the modulated symbols. 17. The subscriber unit of claim 12, wherein the first code associated with the user first channel data has a longer length then the second code associated with the user second channel data.
