A Guided Soft Target (GST) system and method provides a versatile test system and methodology for the evaluation of various crash avoidance technologies. This system and method can be used to replicate the pre-crash motions of the CP in a wide variety of crash scenarios while minimizing physical risk, all while consistently providing radar and other sensor signatures substantially identical to that of the item being simulated. The GST system in various example embodiments may comprise a soft target vehicle or pedestrian form removably attached to a programmable, autonomously guided, self-propelled Dynamic Motion Element (DME), which may be operated in connection with a wireless computer network operating on a plurality of complimentary communication networks. Specific DME geometries are provided to minimize ride disturbance and observability by radar and other sensors. Computer controlled DME braking systems are disclosed as well as break-away and retractable antenna systems.

1. A Dynamic Motion Element for use in testing crash avoidance technologies in a subject vehicle, the Dynamic Motion Element comprising: one or more wireless transmitters collectively adapted to wirelessly transmit data at a plurality of frequencies from the Dynamic Motion Element to a location remote from the Dynamic Motion Element; anda body containing the one or more wireless transmitters, the body comprising an upper surface wherein the upper surface is adapted to support a soft-body having the size and shape of a vehicle, the body having at least one tapered side so as to allow the subject vehicle to drive up to and on the upper surface with minimal to no damage to the subject vehicle or the Dynamic Motion Element, the body further supported by a plurality of wheels. 2. The Dynamic Motion Element of claim 1, wherein the plurality of frequencies includes 900 MHz. 3. The Dynamic Motion Element of claim 1, wherein the plurality of frequencies includes 2.4 GHz. 4. The Dynamic Motion Element of claim 1, wherein the plurality of frequencies includes 900 MHz and 2.4 GHz. 5. A Dynamic Motion Element of a Guided Soft Target, comprising: one or more wireless transceivers collectively adapted to wirelessly transmit and/or receive data at a plurality of frequencies between the Dynamic Motion Element and a location remote from the Dynamic Motion Element. 6. The Dynamic Motion Element of claim 5, wherein the plurality of frequencies includes 900 MHz. 7. The Dynamic Motion Element of claim 5, wherein the plurality of frequencies includes 2.4 GHz. 8. The Dynamic Motion Element of claim 5, wherein the plurality of frequencies includes 900 MHz and 2.4 GHz. 9. The Dynamic Motion Element of claim 5, wherein the plurality of frequencies includes radio band waves. 10. The Dynamic Motion Element of claim 1 further adapted to transmit first data files over a first distance at a first frequency, and further adapted to transmit second data files over a second distance at a second frequency, wherein the first data files are larger than the second data files, the first distance is shorter than the second distance, and the first frequency is higher than the second frequency. 11. The Dynamic Motion Element of claim 5 further adapted to transmit and/or receive first data files over a first distance at a first frequency, and further adapted to transmit and/or receive second data files over a second distance at a second frequency, wherein the first data files are larger than the second data files, the first distance is shorter than the second distance, and the first frequency is higher than the second frequency. 12. A method of transmitting data between a Dynamic Motion Element of a Guided Soft Target and a location remote from the Dynamic Motion Element for use in testing crash avoidance technologies in a subject vehicle, the method comprising the steps of: providing a Dynamic Motion Element of a Guided Soft Target, comprising: one or more wireless transceivers collectively adapted to wirelessly transmit and/or receive data at a plurality of frequencies between the Dynamic Motion Element and a location remote from the Dynamic Motion Element; anda body containing the one or more wireless transmitters, the body comprising an upper surface wherein the upper surface is adapted to support a soft-body having the size and shape of a vehicle, the body having at least one tapered side so as to allow the subject vehicle to drive up to and on the upper surface with minimal to no damage to the subject vehicle or the Dynamic Motion Element, the body further supported by a plurality of wheels;transmitting and/or receiving first data files over a first distance at a first frequency; andtransmitting and/or receiving second data files over a second distance at a second frequency. 13. The method of claim 12, wherein the first data files are larger than the second data files, the first distance is shorter than the second distance, and the first frequency is higher than the second frequency. 14. The method of claim 13, wherein the first frequency is 2.4 GHz. 15. The method of claim 13, wherein the second frequency is 900 MHz. 16. The method of claim 13, wherein the first frequency is 2.4 GHz and the second frequency is 900 MHz. 17. The method of claim 12, further comprising transmitting and/or receiving signals over a third distance at a third frequency. 18. The method of claim 17, wherein the third distance is farther than first and second distances and wherein the third frequency includes radio band waves. 19. The Dynamic Motion Element of claim 1, wherein at least one of the wireless transmitters is adapted to communicate wirelessly over a wireless LAN. 20. The method of claim 12, wherein the step of transmitting and/or receiving first data files over a first distance at a first frequency comprises communicating wirelessly over a wireless LAN.
