1. A glucose monitoring device, comprising: a glucose sensor for transcutaneous positioning under a skin layer, at least a portion of the glucose sensor in fluid contact with interstitial fluid;a memory;a data processing section operatively coupled to the glucose sensor and the memory, wherein the data processing section: establishes a communication range with a remote device when the remote device is positioned within a predetermined distance from the glucose monitoring device; anddetermines when the glucose sensor is transcutaneously positioned and initialized, and based on the determination, transitions a sensor status data bit stored in the memory from a first state to a second state; anda communication module operatively coupled to the data processing section that transmits the sensor status data bit to the remote device when the remote device is placed within the established communication range. 2. The device of claim 1 wherein the sensor status data bit is used to verify the transcutaneous positioning and initialization of the glucose sensor. 3. The device of claim 1 wherein the data processing section transitions the sensor status data bit from a “1” to a “0” or from a “0” to a “1”. 4. The device of claim 1 wherein the sensor status data bit corresponds to a sensor connection status or a sensor removal status. 5. The device of claim 1 wherein the transition of the sensor status data bit from the first state to the second state activates a power up or a power down routine. 6. The device of claim 1 wherein the transition of the sensor status data bit from the first state to the second state corresponds to the transcutaneous positioning and initialization of the glucose sensor, and triggers a power up routine. 7. The device of claim 1 wherein the transition of the sensor status data bit from the first state to the second state corresponds to a detection of a sensor removal, and triggers a power down routine. 8. The device of claim 1 wherein the data processing section generates an identification key. 9. The device of claim 8 wherein the communication module transmits the generated identification key when the remote device is placed within the established communication range. 10. A glucose monitoring system, comprising: a glucose sensor for transcutaneous positioning under a skin layer, at least a portion of the glucose sensor in fluid contact with interstitial fluid;a control device;a glucose monitoring device operatively coupled to the glucose sensor and the control device, the glucose monitoring device comprising: a memory;a data processing section operatively coupled to the glucose sensor, the control device, and the memory, wherein the data processing section: establishes a communication range with the control device when the control device is positioned within a predetermined distance from the glucose monitoring device; anddetermines when the glucose sensor is transcutaneously positioned and initialized, and based on the determination, transitions a sensor status data bit stored in the memory from a first state to a second state; anda communication module operatively coupled to the data processing section that transmits the sensor status data bit to the control device when the control device is placed within the established communication range. 11. The system of claim 10 wherein when the control device determines that a received sensor status data bit is different than a stored sensor status data bit, the control device generates one or more signals related to the status of the transcutaneously positioned glucose sensor including the identity of the transcutaneously positioned glucose sensor. 12. The system of claim 11 wherein the generated one or more signals is output. 13. The system of claim 12 wherein the control device includes a display unit that displays the generated one or more signals. 14. The system of claim 10 wherein the sensor status data bit corresponds to a sensor connection status or a sensor removal status. 15. The system of claim 10 wherein the data processing section generates an identification key. 16. The system of claim 15 wherein the communication module transmits the generated identification key when the control device is placed within the established communication range. 17. The system of claim 16 wherein the identification key corresponds to the identity of the transcutaneously positioned glucose sensor. 18. The system of claim 17 wherein the control device includes a display unit that displays one or more signals related to the identification of the transcutaneously positioned glucose sensor.
