A method of assembling an exterior wall or roof structure of a building with a water-resistive barrier includes covering a surface of an inner sheathing member of a wall or roof structure with a series of partially overlapping courses of water-resistive sheet material. Each overlapping section of the courses of water-resistive sheet material is bonded together with a continuous strip of adhesive to form an air-tight seam. The strip of adhesive is carried integrally on the water-resistive sheet material thereby eliminating a need for separately applying construction tape to seal the seams. A water-resistive barrier and assembly of an exterior wall or roof assembly of a building is also provided.

1. An exterior wall of a building, comprising: an inner sheathing member;a series of partially overlapping courses of vapor-permeable, water-resistive sheet material secured to said inner sheathing member and covering said inner sheathing member to provide a vapor permeable barrier layer, each of said courses having an inner face confronting the inner sheathing member, an opposite outer face facing away from the inner sheathing member, an upper longitudinally-extending edge, a lower longitudinally-extending edge, and a longitudinally-extending central section, and said barrier layer including an alternating array of overlapping sections of said courses and non-overlapping sections of said courses with said longitudinally-extending central section of each of said courses forming said non-overlapping sections of said barrier layer;adhesive provided integrally on at least one of said inner and outer faces of each of said courses in a form of a narrow strip of adhesive extending longitudinally and continuously adjacent one of said upper and lower longitudinally-extending edges of each of said courses, said adhesive covering less than 10% of a surface area of said at least one of said inner and outer faces of each of said courses and not extending on said longitudinally-extending central section on said inner and outer faces of each of said courses so that said strips of adhesive extend entirely within said overlapping sections of said courses for forming an air-tight seal within each of said overlapping sections of said barrier layer and so that vapor permeability through said non-overlapping sections of said barrier layer is maximized; andan exterior covering over said barrier layer. 2. An exterior wall according to claim 1, further comprising fasteners securing said courses to said inner sheathing member, said fasteners being selected from the group consisting of staples, tacks, nails, and headed fasteners. 3. An exterior wall according to claim 1, wherein said barrier layer extends from a foundation to a roof of the building. 4. An exterior wall according to claim 1, wherein said exterior covering is a wood or fiber-cement siding, wooden shingles, cedar shakes, brick, stone, stucco, an exterior insulation finish system (EIFS), vinyl, metal, asphalt, rubber, or thermoplastic material. 5. An exterior wall according to claim 1, wherein said strip of adhesive on each of said courses extends on the inner face closely spaced to the lower longitudinally-extending edge of each of said courses, and wherein less than 10% of a surface area of the inner face of each of said courses is covered the adhesive. 6. An exterior wall according to claim 5, wherein the outer face of each of the courses has an additional integrally-carried strip of adhesive in a form of a narrow continuous strip of adhesive extending longitudinally on the outer face closely spaced to the upper longitudinally-extending edge, and wherein less than 10% of a surface area of the outer face is covered by the additional integrally-carried adhesive. 7. A water-resistive barrier for an external wall of a building, comprising: a series of partially overlapping courses of vapor permeable housewrap material providing a vapor permeable barrier layer having a plurality of seams, each of said courses having an inner face, an opposite outer face, an upper longitudinally-extending edge, a lower longitudinally-extending edge, and a longitudinally-extending central section, and said barrier layer including an alternating array of overlapping sections of said courses and non-overlapping sections of said courses with said longitudinally-extending central section of each of said courses forming said non-overlapping sections of said barrier layer; andadhesive provided integrally on at least one of said inner and outer faces of each of said courses in a form of a narrow strip of adhesive extending longitudinally and continuously adjacent one of said upper and lower longitudinally-extending edges of each of said courses such that said adhesive is located only within overlapping sections of said courses of housewrap material for forming at least one air-tight seal at each of said seams of said barrier layer, said adhesive covering less than 10% of a surface area of said at least one of said inner and outer faces of each of said courses and not extending on said longitudinally-extending central section on said inner and outer faces of each of said courses to maximize vapor permeability of said non-overlapping sections of said barrier layer. 8. A water-resistive barrier according to claim 7, wherein the inner face of each of the courses has said adhesive in a form of a narrow continuous strip of adhesive extending longitudinally on the inner face closely spaced to the lower longitudinally-extending edge, and wherein less than 10% of a surface area of the inner face is covered by the integrally-carried strip of adhesive. 9. A water-resistive barrier according to claim 8, wherein the outer face of each of the courses has said adhesive in a form of a narrow continuous strip of adhesive extending longitudinally on the outer face closely spaced to the upper longitudinally-extending edge, and wherein less than 10% of a surface area of the outer face is covered by the integrally-carried adhesive. 10. An elongate water-resistive membrane, comprising: a first face, an opposite second face, an upper longitudinally-extending edge, a lower longitudinally-extending edge, and a longitudinally-extending central section, said membrane being a vapor permeable housewrap material and being provided in a form of a spiral roll;adhesive provided integrally on said first face in a form of a narrow continuous strip of adhesive extending longitudinally on the first face closely spaced to the lower longitudinally-extending edge, wherein less than 10% of a surface area of the first face is covered by the integrally-carried strip of adhesive and wherein said adhesive does not extend on said longitudinally-extending central section to maximize vapor permeability of said longitudinally-extending central section;a peel-away release sheet covering the strip of adhesive on the first face; andadhesive provided integrally on said second face in a form of a narrow continuous strip of adhesive extending longitudinally on the second face closely spaced to the upper longitudinally-extending edge, wherein less than 10% of a surface area of the second face is covered by adhesive and wherein said adhesive on the second face does not extend on said longitudinally-extending central section of the membrane to maximize vapor permeability of said longitudinally-extending central section.
