There is provided a storage system for storing and retrieving watercraft or other items to or from a storage position in a storage area as part of an enclosure having a plurality of storage areas. The storage system may include at least one carrier to support the item during movement to or from a storage position, and a positioning system to move the carrier system. An elevator system is usable to move the positioning system and carrier system to and from a storage area, and a control system is usable to control the positioning system to move the carrier system and item into and out of its storage position.

A storage system for storing items comprising: a plurality of storage areas designed for receiving and supporting at least one item in association therewith, the plurality of storage areas including at least one upper storage area,at least one carrier system comprising a plurality of support members used to engage and support the at least one item during movement of the item to or from a storage area and while in a storage position,at least one positioning system for moving the carrier system and associated item to a position in a storage area for storage of the item or from a predetermined position in a storage area,at least one travelling elevator system for supporting and moving the at least one positioning system and at least one carrier system and item, and including a drive system for providing lateral movement thereof and a lift system for providing upward movement thereof; anda control system for controlling the at least one positioning system to move the at least one carrier system to and from a storage area while supporting the item. 2. The storage system of claim 1, wherein the carrier system is integral to the at least one positioning system. 3. The storage system of claim 1, wherein the at least one positioning system includes a drive system controlled by the control system to move the at least one carrier system and item to and from the storage position. 4. The storage system of claim 1, wherein the item is a watercraft and the at least one carrier system engages the hull of the watercraft to support the watercraft as it is moved to and from a storage area and in the storage position. 5. The storage system of claim 1, wherein the storage system is in an enclosure and the elevator system is positioned exterior to and/or within the enclosure. 6. The storage system of claim 1, wherein the at least one positioning system is at least one tug system. 7. The storage system of claim 1, wherein the configuration of the plurality of storage areas may be varied to allow items of different sizes to be accommodated. 8. The storage system of claim 1, wherein the control system positions the at least one carrier system and item in the predetermined storage position within a storage area. 9. The storage system of claim 1, further comprising a fire suppression system provided in relative position to the plurality of storage areas to provide fire protection for items positioned therein. 10. The storage system of claim 1, wherein the item is a craft and at least one electric supply system which is coupled to the electric system of a craft positioned in a storage area. 11. The storage system of claim 10, wherein the at least one electric supply system is automatically connected to the electric system of the craft. 12. The storage system of claim 1, wherein the item is a craft and further comprising at least one fluid supply system which can be coupled to a fluid circulation system of the craft. 13. The storage system of claim 12, wherein the at least one fluid supply system is coupled to both the fluid intake port and a separate fluid drain port for supplying and removing fluid from the fluid circulation system of the craft. 14. A storage system for storing items having different shapes or configurations comprising: a plurality of storage areas, with at least some storage areas arranged vertically and laterally relative to one another, for receiving and supporting at least one item in association therewith,at least one item positioning system including a tug system associated therewith for providing movement of the item to and from a storage position in a storage area, wherein the at least one positioning system is adapted to support items of different shapes or configurations, anda travelling elevator system including a drive system for providing lateral movement and a lift system for providing upward movement, on which the item positioning system can be supported and moved both laterally and/or upwardly, anda control system which automatically controls movement of the at least one positioning system and travelling elevator to position an item in a predetermined position in a predetermined storage area, wherein the control system includes locating systems to control movement of items having different configurations to and from a stored position in a predetermined storage area. 15. The storage system of claim 14, wherein the at least one positioning system includes an item carrier system and a tug system associated therewith, the tug system allowing movement of the item both into a storage area from the travelling elevator system or from a storage area onto the travelling elevator system. 16. The storage system of claim 15, wherein the tug system is integral to the item carrier system. 17. The storage system of claim 15, wherein the item carrier system is customized for the carrying a predetermined item or has universal supports for carrying a plurality of items having different configurations. 18. A storage system for storing large items comprising: a plurality of storage areas, with at least some storage areas arranged vertically and laterally relative to one another, for receiving and supporting at least one item,at least one item positioning system including an item carrier system and a tug system associated therewith for supporting an item and providing movement of the item to a storage position in a storage area, the tug system including a drive system, anda travelling elevator system including a drive system for providing lateral movement thereof and a lift system for providing upward movement thereof, on which the item positioning system can be supported and moved both laterally and/or upwardly to be stored in a predetermined position in a predetermined storage area; anda control system which automatically controls movement of the at least one item positioning system and travelling elevator system to position or retrieve an item from a predetermined position in a predetermined storage area. 19. The storage system of claim 18, the control system further comprising locating systems to control movement of items to and from a stored position in a predetermined storage area.
