A process comprising: submerging a fuel cell bipolar plate in a bath comprising nanoparticles and a liquid phase comprising a nanoparticles dispersion agent and wherein the bipolar plate includes an upper surface having a plurality of lands and channels formed therein; removing the fuel cell bipolar plate from the bath so that a coating comprising nanoparticles adheres to the fuel cell bipolar plate; while the coating is wet and before the coating is dried and solidified, removing the coating comprising nanoparticles from the lands of the bipolar plate, leaving coating comprising nanoparticle in the channels; and drying the coating in the channels.

A process as set forth in claim 1 wherein the removing the coating from the lands comprises wiping the coating off of the lands. 3. A process as set forth in claim 2 wherein the wiping comprises moving a blade across the lands. 4. A process as set forth in claim 3 wherein the blade comprises a metal. 5. A process as set forth in claim 3 wherein the blade comprises an elastic material. 6. A process as set forth in claim 3 wherein the blade comprises a rubber. 7. A process as set forth in claim 3 wherein the blade comprises a composite. 8. A process as set forth in claim 7 wherein the liquid phase further comprises water. 9. A process as set forth in claim 2 wherein the wiping comprises moving a squeegee across the lands. 10. A process as set forth in claim 2 wherein the wiping comprises moving a fabric across the lands. 11. A process as set forth in claim 2 wherein the wiping comprises moving an elastic material across the lands. 12. A process as set forth in claim 1 further comprising rinsing the fuel cell component to remove any nanoparticles not sufficiently adhered the fuel cell component prior to drying the coating in the channels. 13. A process as set forth in claim 1 wherein the dispersion agent comprises an alcohol. 14. A process as set forth in claim 13 wherein the alcohol is present in at least 30 percent by volume of the liquid phase. 15. A process as set forth in claim 13 wherein the liquid phase further comprises water in an amount of 0.1-70 volume percent of the liquid phase. 16. A process as set forth in claim 13 wherein the alcohol comprises at least one of methanol, ethanol or propanol. 17. A process as set forth in claim 1 wherein the nanoparticle dispersion agent comprises an organic solvent capable of making a solution with water. 18. A process as set forth in claim 1 wherein the polyelectrolyte polymer includes cationic functional groups. 19. A process as set forth in claim 1 wherein the polyelectrolyte polymer includes anionic functional groups. 20. A process as set forth in claim 1 further comprising applying a second coating material to the polyelectrolyte polymer adhered to the component. 21. A process as set forth in claim 1 further comprising applying a second coating material including negative functional groups to the polyelectrolyte polymer adhered to the component and so that the negative functional groups and the positive functional groups form an ionic bond. 22. A process as set forth in claim 1 wherein the nanoparticles includes negative functional groups. 23. A process as set forth in claim 1 wherein the nanoparticles comprising siloxane. 24. A process as set forth in claim 1 wherein the nanoparticles comprise silicon dioxide. 25. A process as set forth in claim 1 wherein the coating comprises nanoparticles comprising organic side chains having functional groups comprising at least one of an epoxy, an acryloxy, a methacryloxy, or a glycidyloxy group. 26. A process as set forth in claim 1 wherein the coating comprises nanoparticles comprising organic side chains having functional groups comprising at least one of an allyl or a vinyl group. 27. A process as set forth in claim 1 wherein the coating comprises nanoparticles comprising organic side chains having functional groups comprising at least one of a carboxyl, a mercapto, an amide, an amino, or an isocyano group. 28. A process as set forth in claim 1 wherein the coating comprises nanoparticles comprising organic side chains having functional groups comprising a silanol group. 29. A process as set forth in claim 1 wherein the coating comprises nanoparticles comprising a polymer having Si—O groups. 30. A process as set forth in claim 1 wherein the nanoparticles comprise at least one of HfO2, ZrO2, Al2O3, SnO2, TaO5, NbO5, MoO2, IrO2, RuO2 or metastable oxynirides, nonstoichimeteric metal oxides, oxynitrides and derivatives thereof. 31. A process as set forth in claim 1 wherein the nanoparticles are derived from a material having the formula: wherein R1, R2, R3, R4, R5, and R6, each may be H, O, Cl, or a saturated or unsaturated carbon chain having 1 to 4 carbon atoms, and wherein R1, R2, R3, R4, R5, and R6, may be the same or different, and at least one of R1, R2, R3, R4, R5, or R6 is a carbon chain with at least one carbon atom. 32. A process comprising: (a) applying an aqueous polyelectrolyte polymer solution to a fuel cell bipolar plate having an upper surface including a plurality of lands and channels so that the polyelectrolyte polymer adheres to the plate;(b) removing any polyelectrolyte polymer not adhered to the plate wherein some of the polyelectrolyte polymer remains adhered to the lands of the fuel cell bipolar plate;(c) applying a second coating material to the polyelectrolyte polymer adhered to the plate;(d) removing any of the second coating material not adhered to the polyelectrolyte polymer adhered to the plate wherein some of the second coating material remains adhered to the lands of the fuel cell bipolar plate;(e) submerging the fuel cell bipolar plate in a bath comprising nanoparticles and a liquid phase comprising a nanoparticles dispersion agent:(f) removing the fuel cell bipolar plate from the bath so that a coating of nanoparticles adheres to the fuel cell component wherein some of the coating of nanoparticles remains adhered to the lands of the fuel cell bipolar plate;(g) rinsing the fuel cell bipolar plate to remove any nanoparticles not sufficiently adhered to the fuel cell component;(h) while the coating is wet and before the coating is dried and solidified, removing the coating comprising nanoparticles from the lands of the bipolar plate, leaving coating comprising nanoparticle in the channels; and(i) drying the coating channels. 33. A process as set forth in claim 32 wherein the removing the coating from the lands comprises wiping the coating off of the lands. 34. A process as set forth in claim 33 wherein the wiping comprises moving a blade across the lands. 35. A process as set forth in claim 32 further comprising repeating (a-d) several times. 36. A process as set forth in claim 32 further comprising repeating (f-g) several times. 37. A process comprising: (a) removing grease and contaminants from a fuel cell bipolar plate having an upper surface including a plurality of lands and channels by immersing the plate in a pretreatment solution;(b) rinsing the plate in a first bath of deionized water;(c) rinsing the plate in a second bath of deionized water;(d) immersing the plate in a first aqueous solution of a first polyelectrolyte polymer;(e) rinsing the plate in a third bath of deionized water to remove any of the first polyelectrolyte polymer not adhered to the plate wherein some of the first polyelectrolyte polymer remains adhered to the lands of the fuel cell bipolar plate;(f) rinsing the plate in a fourth bath of deionized water;(g) immersing the plate in a second dispersion comprising a second coating material, wherein the second dispersion includes nanoparticles and an alcohol;(h) rinsing the plate in a fourth bath of deionized water to remove any of the second coating material not adhered to the first polyelectrolyte polymer adhered to the plate wherein some of the second coating material remains adhered to the lands of the fuel cell bipolar plate;(i) rinsing the plate in a fifth bath of deionized water;(j) repeating (d-I) for three cycles;(k) removing any coating from the lands while the coatings are still wet from the rinsing;(l) drying the plate.
