Hard panels formed from a wood-based material and having a decorative layer for floor coverings are provided, at least on two opposite edges, with coupling devices made in one piece with the panels wherein similar panels may be coupled together to form a floor covering, wherein these coupling devices provide for an interlocking in a direction perpendicular to the plane of coupled panels, as well as in a direction perpendicular to the edges concerned and parallel to the plane of coupled panels. These coupling devices are constituted of a tongue and a groove. The top side of the tongue has a protrusion that cooperates with a meshing recess located in the lower side of the upper lip of the groove of the coupling devices, and a portion extending generally parallel with the plane of the panel to form a contact surface cooperating with the lower side of the upper lip of the groove.

1. Floor panel, for forming a decorative floor covering, the floor panel including two pairs of opposite edges, the first pair of opposite edges including first coupling means, as a result of which several of such panels can be mutually coupled to one another, the first coupling means providing for an interlocking in a direction perpendicular to the plane of the floor covering, and in a direction perpendicular to the edges concerned, and parallel to the plane of the floor panel;the second pair of opposite edges including second coupling means, as a result of which several of such panels can be mutually coupled to one another, the second coupling means providing for an interlocking in a direction perpendicular to the plane of the floor covering, as well as in a direction perpendicular to the edges concerned, and parallel to the plane of the floor panel, said second coupling means comprising a tongue and a groove, said groove being bordered by an upper lip and a lower lip, wherein said upper lip has a distal end and said lower lip extends beyond the distal end of the upper lip;the second coupling means including first coupling parts, second coupling parts and third coupling parts, said first coupling parts being formed from contact surfaces on the top side of the tongue and the bottom side of the upper lip respectively, said second coupling parts being formed of contact surfaces, on the top side of the lower lip and an opposite part of a coupled panel respectively, andsaid third coupling parts allowing for an horizontal interlocking and being formed of contact surfaces on an interlocking part situated on the lower lip yet further than the free end of the upper lip and on an opposite part of a coupled panel respectively;wherein in a coupled condition of two of such panels, said second coupling parts with respect to the panel are situated proximal from the third coupling parts;wherein said first coupling parts, second coupling parts and third coupling parts are arranged such that in the coupled condition the second coupling parts are at a location beyond the upper edge of the panel;wherein the second coupling means are configured such that in the coupled condition of two of such panels a free space exists under the tongue, said free space extending as of the tip of the tongue up to said location of said second coupling parts;wherein said interlocking part of the third coupling parts extends upward from the lower lip, and including an upper end defining a horizontal level, the contact surfaces of said second coupling parts being located lower than said horizontal level;wherein said tongue has a most distal front surface generally extending downwards from a position above said horizontal level to a position below said horizontal level;wherein said lower lip is made in one piece with the panel, said lower lip having a lower surface that at least up to underneath the contact surface of said interlocking part is substantially coplanar with the lower side of the panel; andwherein in the coupled condition of two of such panels, at the second pair of edges, the mean distance between the co-operating contact surfaces of the first coupling parts and the co-operating contact surfaces of the third coupling parts, measured in a direction parallel to the plane of the floor panels, is larger than the mean distance between the co-operating contact surfaces of the first coupling parts and the co-operating contact surfaces of the second coupling parts, measured in a direction vertical to the plane of the floor panels. 2. The floor panel of claim 1, wherein said third locking parts are located at a distance from said second locking parts and wherein the upper side of the lower lip in between the second locking parts and the third locking parts shows a surface portion that is located at a lower level than the contact surfaces of said second locking parts. 3. The floor panel of claim 2, wherein the panels are rectangular and have a longitudinal form, such that they have long edges and short edges; wherein the above-mentioned first pair of opposite edges forms the long edges; and wherein the above-mentioned second pair of opposite edges forms the short edges. 4. The floor panel of claim 2, wherein the first coupling means are made in one piece with the floor panel. 5. The floor panel of claim 2, wherein the second coupling means are made in one piece with the floor panel. 6. The floor panel of claim 1, wherein the floor panel comprises a decorative layer. 7. The floor panel of claim 1, wherein the panels are rectangular and have a longitudinal form, such that they have long edges and short edges; wherein the first pair of opposite edges forms the long edges; and wherein the second pair of opposite edges forms the short edges. 8. The floor panel of claim 7, wherein said horizontal locking at the second pair of opposite edges is obtained by only one pair of contact surfaces. 9. The floor panel of claim 8, wherein said free space extends up to a location distally beyond said upper lip. 10. The floor panel of claim 1, wherein the first coupling means are made in one piece with the floor panel. 11. The floor panel of claim 1, wherein the second coupling means are made in one piece with the floor panel.
