A system and method of providing bi-level CPAP therapy is provided that incorporates an infrared carbon-dioxide sensor to determine whether a patient is inhaling or exhaling. Patient exhalation causes the infrared light to be absorbed, while patient inhalation reduces the presence of carbon-dioxide

1. A system for administering a breathing gas comprising: a patient breathing interface;a blower for providing positive pressure breathing gas to the patient breathing interface;a controller in circuit communication with the blower; andan infrared light emitter and detector in circuit communication
