Methods and devices for occluding a vessel during a percutaneous ablation procedure. An elongated access device having a lumen and a tissue piercing, open distal end in communication with the lumen is used to percutaneously access a vessel that supplied blood to the tissue to be treated. An elongated balloon deployment device is used to deliver a balloon into the interior of the vessel. The balloon is inflated, resulting in the occlusion of the vessel. The tissue to be treated is ablated. Because there is little or no blood to transfer the thermal energy away from the heated tissue, the ablation procedure is performed more efficiently. The balloon may be subsequently deflated allowing normal flow through the vessel to return.

1. A method of treating tissue comprising: inserting a cannula into a lumen of a blood vessel leading to the tissue, the cannula having a lumen extending from a proximal end to a distal end, the cannula including an expandable balloon disposed at the distal end, the balloon attached circumferentially to an interior wall of the cannula;expanding the balloon so as to at least partially occlude fluid flow in the vessel; andthermally treating the tissue. 2. The method of claim 1, wherein the cannula is introduced percutaneously. 3. The method of claim 1, wherein the tissue is a tumor. 4. The method of claim 1, Wherein heat is delivered via an electrode element operatively connected to a RF generator. 5. The method of claim 1, wherein the electrode element is disposed at a distal end of a separate ablation probe. 6. The method of claim 4, wherein the electrode element comprises an array of needles. 7. The method of claim 1, wherein the vessel is a portal vein. 8. The method of claim 1, wherein the vessel is a hepatic artery. 9. The method of claim 1, wherein the cannula comprises a piercing tip. 10. The method of claim 1, wherein (a) an opening of the balloon is attached proximally to a distal tip of the cannula, and (b) the balloon, when inflated, expands through the distal end of the cannula. 11. The method of claim 10, wherein the cannula includes a piercing tip. 12. A tissue ablation system comprising: a cannula having a proximal end and a distal end, a lumen extending between the proximal end and the distal end, and a balloon attached circumferentially to an interior wall of the cannula; andan electrosurgical probe. 13. The tissue ablation system of claim 12, wherein the electrosurgical probe comprises a cannula shaft having a proximal end and a distal end, the distal end comprising an electrode device mounted thereon. 14. The tissue ablation system of claim 13, wherein the electrode device comprises an array of needles. 15. The tissue ablation system of claim 13, wherein the proximal end of the cannula shaft comprises an electrical connector. 16. The tissue ablation system of claim 15, further comprising a RF generator configured to interface with the electrical connector. 17. The tissue ablation system of claim 12, wherein the cannula includes first and second branches at a proximal end of the cannula, wherein the first branch is connected to a source of fluid for inflating the balloon. 18. The system of claim 12, wherein (a) an opening of the balloon is attached proximally to a distal tip of the cannula, and (b) the balloon, when inflated, expands through the distal end of the cannula. 19. The system of claim 18, wherein the cannula includes a piercing tip. 20. A method of treating a tumor comprising: inserting a distal portion of a cannula into a blood vessel leading to the tumor, the cannula having a lumen extending from a proximal end to a distal end and a balloon attached circumferentially to an interior wall at the distal end of the cannula;expanding the balloon to partially occlude the blood vessel; anddelivering radiofrequency energy to the tumor. 21. The method of claim 20, wherein (a) an opening of the balloon is attached proximally to a distal tip of the cannula, and (b) the balloon, when inflated, expands through the distal end of the cannula. 22. The method of claim 21, wherein the cannula includes a piercing tip.
